ODAC Players of the Week

James, a sophomore from Greenville, N.C., joins senior teammate Sammy Stuart as Guilford winners of the ODAC’s weekly pitching honor this season. The right-hander was 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in three appearances last week. James threw four scoreless innings in relief over two weekday contests before posting his first career complete game in the Quakers’ 4-2 win at ODAC-foe Randolph-Macon College Saturday. He scattered eight hits and fanned four in his team-leading third victory of the season. James is 3-3 this year with a 4.40 ERA in a club-high 15 appearances. In addition to wins and appearances, he leads the Quakers in innings (47) and strikeouts (28). James is 3-0 with a 3.13 ERA and 15 strikeouts in six ODAC games.

Manthe, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Va., batted .529 (9-for-17) with three doubles and eight runs batted in as he led the Maroons to a 3-1 record last week. He also scored five runs, walked twice and stole a base. Manthe went a career-high 4-for-5 with three runs, a double and five RBI in the first game of a split series against Emory & Henry. He followed that with a pair of two-baggers as part of a 3-for-4 day with two RBI in a win over Virginia Intermont. For the season, Manthe leads Roanoke with several offensive categories including batting avereage (.304), hits (34), runs (17), doubles (11), homers (3) and RBI (24).

Redwood, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., was the top finishing Division III player in a rain-shortened Roanoke Spring Invitational at the Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, Va. Redwood turned in a 27-hole total of 107 (two-under; 36-71) to finish in second place overall. The defending ODAC individual champion helped pace the Eagles to a second place team finish in BC's final tune-up prior to the ODAC Championships at Bay Creek next week.

Keating, a junior from Chatham, N.J., totaled seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points in three victories last week, two against ODAC opponents. He notched three goals and three assists with four groundballs in a 19-10 win over Washington & Lee to take over first in the ODAC Standings. Against Randolph, he netted two goals and dished out three assists in the Maroons' 23-7 triumph over the Wildcats. Keating had five points on one goal and four assists in a tight 14-13 win against 17th-ranked Cabrini College. For the season, Keating in first in the ODAC with 49 overall points and second at 3.77 points per game.

Hawkins, a sophomore from Silver Spring, Md., was outstanding from his number one ladder position in singles action, going 4-0 on the week. Hawkins opened the week with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Randolph’s Sam Churchill before posting a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win over 2010 ODAC second teamer Jon Roy. On Saturday, Hawkins claimed a 7-5, 6-2 win against Arvin Wong of St. Mary’s (Md.) before knocking off 2010 ODAC second teamer Chip Wintringham by a 6-3, 6-4 tally to wrap up the week on Sunday. Hawkins also went 3-1 in doubles play with teammate Brent Floyd. Hawkins is currently riding a team-best six match singles winning streak.

Davis, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Va., competed in and won both hurdle events at the Lynchburg Track Classic over the weekend. In the 110-meter high hurdles, he posted a time of 15.15 seconds, setting a new conference season-best mark. He went on to run 56.35 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, out-pacing his closest competitor by .84 seconds. Davis also ran a leg in the Hornets' 4x400-meter relay, helping LC to second place in a time of 3:21.84.

Landes, a senior from Staunton, Va., provisionally qualified for the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the javelin following her performance at the Lynchburg Track Classic. Landes fired the apparatus 39.45 meters (129'5") to win the event. Her throw is 20'6" farther than the next closest in the ODAC this season and is currently ranked as the 20th-best toss in NCAA Division III this season.

Burcham, a junior from Lexington, N.C., threw the first perfect game in Guilford softball history on Sunday, striking out 13-of-15 batters against Sweet Briar College. She began the week with seven strong innings towards her 11th win of the season over Randolph. She allowed two hits and struck out eight WildCats in Guilford's 4-1 win. Burcham fanned 21 batters and held the opposition to a .053 batting average in her 2-0 week. Her two outings this week led to her tying school records for wins (12) and shutouts (5) in a season.

Childress, a senior from Franklin, Va., put together an excellent week at the dish in leading the Eagles to a 3-1 mark. Childress hit at an .833 clip (10-for-12) and reached base in 12-of-14 plate appearances (walked twice). Childress went 6-for-6 in the doubleheader on Thursday at Emory & Henry, before notching a three-hit game in the opener on Sunday at York. The Eagles third baseman scored five times on the week and drove in an additional three runs to aid the Eagles offense. She also hit her 12th double and third homer of the season. Childress leads the ODAC with a .484 batting average and .561 on-base percentage.

Harding, a senior from Waterford, N.Y., stretched her current scoring streak to a team-leading 10 consecutive games by scoring nine goals in a 2-0 week for VWC. She fired in five against Randolph-Macon and added four goals and an assist against Sweet Briar. Harding also picked up 14 ground balls in the two games, won five draw controls and caused two turnovers. She is VWC’s co-leader in points with 41 and team leader in ground balls with 62.

Taylor, a freshman from Springfield, Va., picks up her second weekly honor after a week that included a pair of singles wins over regionally-ranked opponents. Taylor, competing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles over the past week, went 4-0 overall in singles action and 2-2 in doubles play. She opened the week with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Washington and Lee's Lauren Lukas, currently the 19th-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Taylor continued her week with singles and doubles victories over Emory & Henry (6-1, 6-0 and 8-4) and Southern Virginia (6-1, 6-1 and 8-2). She capped her week with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Courtney Goimarac from Mary Washington, the 17th-rated player in the region. For the season, Taylor tops the ODAC singles win-loss records with a 15-0 mark, all from the No. 1 ladder position. She is currently ranked 20th in the region. The new ITA rankings are set to be released on April 14.
