Generals’ Tennis to Represent the ODAC in NCAA Tournaments

W&L Heads to Emory for Men’s and Women’s Opening Rounds

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Washington and Lee University will represent the ODAC in both the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team Tournaments, set to begin play May 10-12 in a series of first, second and third round matches.  The Generals earned their spots in both tournaments via the ODAC’s automatic bids after winning the conference postseason tourneys.

Men’s Tournament Bracket       Women’s Tournament Bracket

The men’s tennis tournament consists of 44 teams with 30 earning automatic bids after winning their respective league tourneys.  Seven teams enter from the independent ranks (pool B) and the remaining seven received at-large berths.  The women’s field is six teams larger with 50 squads looking to make their way to Kalamazoo, Mich., the host for both the men’s and women’s quarterfinals, semifinals and championships on May 20-22.  Thirty-eight women’s teams earned automatic entries, while three are from independent schools and the remaining nine participate as at-large selections.

Both the W&L men’s and women’s teams head to Emory University for competition in the first three rounds.  On the men’s side, the Generals (18-5), ranked 21st in the country and third in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), open their NCAA slate with a first round match against N.C. Wesleyan.  The Battling Bishops (14-9), ranked 23rd in the country and fifth in the region, earned their spot by winning the USA South Athletic Conference title.  W&L and NCWC played each other during the regular season, with the Generals posting a 7-2 win in late March.

On the women’s side, the nationally 16th-ranked and regionally fifth-ranked Generals (18-7) square off with Methodist University (20-2) in the first round.  The Monarchs are ranked ninth in the region, having punched their NCAA dance card by winning the USA South championship.  W&L and MU have not played each other this season.
