ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: March 14, 2016

BASEBALL - PITCHER
James Walsh, Randolph-Macon, Sr., Pitcher
Walsh, a senior from Mechanicsville, Va., tossed eight shutout innings as the Yellow Jackets earned an 8-0 win over Bridgewater. Walsh game up just four hits, all singles, and walked only one batter on his way to improving to 4-0 on the season. He struck out seven batters along the way, giving him 49 punchouts in 34.1 innings of work. He lowered his earned run average to 1.83.

BASEBALL - HITTER
Sean Guida, Roanoke, So., Outfielder
Guida, a sophomore from Summit, N.J., helped the Maroons to a 2-1 week that included a sweep of sixth-ranked Shenandoah in ODAC play. Guida went 7-for-14 for the week, picking up at least one run batted in during each game. He was 1-for-3 with a RBI in a loss (8-3) to Penn St.-Harrisburg. He followed that with a 5-for-6 outburst in a 14-3 triumph over SU in game one of the series. He legged out a triple, scored three runs, and drove in five more. He continued in the second contest, smacking a double, scoring a run and driving in one more. Guida is currently hitting .410 (16-for-39) with 11 RBI and 10 runs scored.

MEN'S GOLF
Ty Palmer, Guilford, Jr.
Palmer, a junior from Kernersville, N.C., started off the spring season with the second medalist title of his career by winning the TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate. He fired rounds of 71, 72 and 73 to finish at even par for the tournament and one shot clear of teammate Justin Perdue and Hampden-Sydney's Alex Simmons for the individual crown. His efforts helped Guilford recover for the team title by four strokes over Wittenberg. He currently boasts an average of 73.6 for the year.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Marin Warring, Bridgewater, Sr.
Warring, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., placed in the top-four in two strong tournaments for the Eagles last week. She chimed in fourth at the TaylorMade-adidas Intercollegiate with a 14-over 158. She carded rounds of 76 and 82, helping Bridgewater to second place in the team standings, just 17 shots off the pace of top-ranked Wittenberg. Warring was back at in the Browngolf Intercollegiate, placing second overall in an event that featured NCAA Division II teams. She carded a career-best 73 in the first round prior to a second-round 80 to finish 9-over par at 153. Warring currently owns a 77.9 average in 11 rounds played this year.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Will Pilat, Roanoke, Sr., Attack
Pilat, a senior from Roanoke, Va., exploded for 14 points to help the 11th-ranked Maroons to a 3-0 week. He opened with one goal, a ground ball and a caused turnover in a 12-7 triumph at Colorado College. He followed that with four goals and two assists in a 16-10 victory over Wittenberg. Two of his tallies were man-up scores. He added three ground balls and a caused turnover. Pilat capped his week with five goals and a pair of helpers as Roanoke opened ODAC play with an 18-5 win over Randolph-Macon. Pilat has registered 21 points on 13 goals and eight assists in seven games played this season.

MEN'S TENNIS
Michael Holt, Washington and Lee, Sr., #1 Singles/#1 Doubles
Holt, a senior from Henrico, Va., helped the Generals to a 5-4 team win over 15th-ranked Mary Washington in a matchup of nationally-ranked programs. Holt, ranked 46th on the ITA's singles charts, took on 32nd-ranked Brandon Griffin at #1 singles. Holt registered a 6-2, 7-6 triumph. He and teammate Jordan Krasner scored an 8-4 victory over Griffin and Max Fritsch at #1 doubles. For the yeah, Holt is 12-2 in singles action and 5-8 in doubles play.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD EVENTS
Evan Truman, Lynchburg, Jr., Jumps/Sprints
Truman, a junior from Richmond, Va., started off the outdoor season with a nice showing in the long jump at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC-Wilmington. He placed fourth in the event by reaching 6.95 meters. He also ran in a pair of events, posting 0:11.29 in the 100-meter dash and 0:22.92 in the 200-meter dash. He placed 11th and ninth in those events, respectively.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK EVENTS
Cameron Thompson, Roanoke, Jr., Sprints
Thompson, a McLean, Va., kicked off the outdoor season with a pair of strong showings in the sprints at the Coach O Coastal Carolina Invitational. Thompson finished seventh in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 0:10.98 to lead all NCAA D-III competitors in the event. He did the same in the 200-meter dash, placing 15th overall in 0:22.20.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD EVENTS
Mary Kelly, Roanoke, Sr., Throws
Kelly, a senior from Somerville, N.J., competed in three throwing events at the Coach O Coastal Carolina Invitational. In the javelin, she opened the ODAC season just nine-feet short of the ODAC record with a throw of 39.91 meters (130' 11.0"), which placed third overall. Kelly threw the discus 28.62 meters (93' 11.0") and the hammer 34.07 meters (111' 9.0"), which placed 26th and 29th, respectively.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK EVENTS
Lindsey Crill, Lynchburg, Sr., Mid-Distance
Crill, a senior from Highland Falls, N.Y., competed in the 800-meter run and the mile run at the outdoor season-opening Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC-Wilmington. She placed 16th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.99, and added a ninth place showing in the mile run at 5:36.85. Both marks were tops among NCAA Division III competitors in the events.

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Candace Whittemore, Randolph-Macon, Fr., Pitcher
Whittemore, a freshman from Montpelier, Va., picked up three wins and four appearances last week to help the Yellow Jackets to four wins in those contests. Whittemore went the distance in her three starts, striking out 19 batters and allowing just one earned run in 23.1 innings of work. In a 6-3 win over Washington College, she gave up three runs, one earned, on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in seven innings. After striking out the lone batter she faced in game one against Susquehanna, Whittemore, twirled a shutout in game two, scattering six hits with one walk and seven punchouts in seven frames in the circle. She capped her week with a nine-inning 6-5 victory over Franklin & Marshall. She gave up five unearned runs on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. For the season, Whittemore is 6-2 with a 2.23 earned run average in 53.1 innings of work. She leads the ODAC with 46 strikeouts and three shutouts.

SOFTBALL - HITTER
Sabrina Moreno, Guilford, Fr. Outfielder
Moreno, a freshman from Chula Vista, Calif., registered six extra-base hits as part of an 8-for-19 week to help Guilford to a 5-1 showing. Moreno had a pair of three hit games, including a 3-for-3 outing with a double and two homeruns to defeat Salem, 10-5. She drove in six runs and scored twice in that contest. She hit two more homers on the week, both coming in separate games against Wilson. She also legged out a triple, walked twice and stole a base. Moreno racked up 11 runbs batted in for the week, while crossing the plate seven times herself. For the season, Moreno is hitting .425 with ODAC highs in homers (6) and slugging (1.000). She is second with 23 RBI.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Alicia Hsieh, Randolph-Macon, So., Midfielder
Hsieh, a sophomore from Ellicott City, Md., registered 14 points as the Yellow Jackets went 1-1 last week. She opened with five goals, three draw controls and a ground ball in R-MC's 13-10 setback at Mary Washington. Hsieh helped the Yellow Jackets respond with a 15-6 triumph at Goucher. She tied a program record with eight goals scored, adding in one assist for nine points. She also chipped in a ground ball and a caused turnover. For the season, Hsieh is fourth in the ODAC with 15 goals scored and sixth with 16 points.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Fernanda Gonzalez, Guilford (Sr. - #3/4 Singles/#2 Doubles
Gonzalez, a senior from Siler City, N.C., helped the Quakers to a pair of team wins over Averett (5-4) and Shenandoah (6-3) last week. Gonzalez posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at #4 singles against the Cougars, while teaming with Leigh Fishman for an 8-6 victory at #2 doubles. Agaisnt SU, she added a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at #3 singles, while she and Fishman earned an 8-5 decision at #2 doubles. For the year, Gonzalez is 4-1 in singles play and 2-4 in doubles action.
