ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: April 4, 2016

BASEBALL - PITCHER
Tom Concklin, Washington and Lee, Sr., Pitcher
Concklin, a junior from Hinsdale, Ill., helped the Generals to a doubleheader sweep of Roanoke College by winning game one, 10-1. He worked 8.1 innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits. He walked one and fanned six batters. Concklin is tied for the leage lead in wins as he moved to 6-0 on the season. His 1.12 earned run average is second in the ODAC. He has only walked seven batters and struck out 45 in 56.1 innings of work, the third-most in the league.

BASEBALL - HITTER
Matt Wasson, Washington and Lee, Jr., Outfielder
Wasson, a junior from Merion Station, Pa., saw his bat come to life in the Generals 3-0 week as he went 7-for-16 from the dish to help Washington and Lee down a trio of ODAC foes. Wasson had multiple hits in each contest, driving in six runs while scoring five times. He started with a 2-for-6 day in a 9-3 win at Bridgewater. He tripled and drove in four runs while scoring once. In a sweep of Roanoke, Wasson was 5-for-10 overall. He was 2-for-5 with a RBI and run scored in game one. He followed that with a 3-for-5 showing in game two, smacking a pair of doubles on the way to a RBI and three runs scored. W&L won those contests 10-1 and 10-4, respectively. For the season, Wasson is hitting .263 with a .354 on-base percentage. He has hit safely in four straight games.

MEN'S GOLF
Evan Cox, Virginia Wesleyan, So.
Cox, a sophomore from Ashland, Ky., put together his fifth top-five showing of the season by tying for fourth at the 45th Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate held at Paradise Point Golf Course in Camp LeJeune, N.C. Cox finished one stroke off of third place in the event, finishing with a three round 215 at 1-over par. His efforts helped #38 Virginia Wesleyan to a fourth-place showing behind second-ranked Methodist University, #4 Oglethorpe University, and #21 Greensboro College. Cox opened with a 1-under 69 on the par-70 Scarlet Course before shooting even-par 72 on the championship Gold Course. He finished with a 2-over 74, helping Virginia Wesleyan post a 300 team score, the low-effort for the third round in the tournament field.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Marin Warring, Bridgewater, Sr.
Warring, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., helped the Eagles to a match play victory over Washington and Lee as 17th-ranked Bridgewater topped the #20 Generals, 4-1, at Stoney Creek Golf Course. Stoney Creek, part of Wintergreen Resort, will be the setting for the ODAC Championships later this month. Warring bested 2015 ODAC Player of the Year, Mary-Frances Hall, 4&3 in their matchup. Warring is currently fourth in the ODAC with a 77.5 per round average.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Burke McManus, Roanoke, Fr. Goalkeeper
McManus, a freshman from Baltimore, Md., helped the #19 Maroons to a pair of ODAC wins last week. McManus made 22 saves overall, beginning with nine stops in an 11-7 victory over Randolph College. He followed that up by setting a new career-best with 13 saves in a 9-8 triumph at Hampden-Sydney. He registered a .619 save percentage in that contest, with four stops coming in the opening frame as RC built a 5-2 advantage. For the season, McManus is sixth in the ODAC with an 8.89 goals-against-average and eighth with a .548 save percentage.

MEN'S TENNIS
Kenneth Downing, Virginia Wesleyan, Jr. #2 Singles, #2 Doubles
Downing, a junior from Washington, D.C., helped the Marlins to a 3-0 week that included two ODAC wins and a victory over NCAA Division I member Hampton University. Downing and partner Tyler Chang earned an 8-2 #2 doubles win over Randolph to help the Marlins to a 5-0 team win. The duo would later add a pair of 8-6 wins over Hampton and Bridgewater. Downing competed at #2 singles, picking up a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Hampton's Miguel Saurez on the way to a 6-1 team triumph. Downing capped his week with a 6-3, 6-3 #2 singles victory against Bridgewater, helping VWC to a 7-2 victory. Virginia Wesleyan is now 9-5 overall and 4-0 in league play.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD
Darin Council, Bridgewater, Jr., Jumps/Throws
Council, a junior from Stafford, Va., competed in four events at the Roanoke Invitational. He won the triple jump with a mark of 13.45 meters, taking over the top spot in the ODAC and ranking 31st in NCAA Division III. Council added a third place showing in the discus (40.37m), fourth in the shot put (12.79m) and 15th in the hammer (29.50m). His marks in the shot and discus rank inside the ODAC's top-five this season.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK
Josephus Mitchell, Guilford, Jr., Sprints
Mitchell, a junior from Winston-Salem, N.C., put together a stellar sprinting day at the VertKlasse Meeting hosted by High Point University. Mitchell posted the best 100-meter dash time in the ODAC this season, chiming in at 0:10.88. That mark ranks 19th in NCAA Division III and cracks the top-eight all-time at Guilford. He added a time of 0:22.78 in the 200-meter dash for fifth in the ODAC, and then joined teammates Gus Chambers, Nick Jones and Alex Martin for a 0:44.26 showing in the 4x100-meter relay.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD
Kristen Trice, Bridgewater, Sr., Jumps/Throws
Trice, a senior from Glen Allen, Va., competed in three events at the Roanoke Invitational, finishing in the top-three in both horizontal jumps. She won the triple jump at 11.44 meters, which is the top mark in the ODAC this season by nearly a meter and ranks seventh in NCAA Division III. Trice added a third place showing in the long jump at 5.04 meters, and finished 12th in the javelin at 23.38 meters.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK
Hannah Chappell-Dick, Eastern Mennonite, Sr., Mid-Distance
Chappell-Dick, a senior from Bluffton, Ohio, continued her move up the national rankings in the mid-distance races, this time competing in just the 1,500-meter run at the Colonial Relays. Already the owner of the third-best time in the country, Chappell-Dick moved up to #2 in NCAA Division III with a time of 4:28.62 as she closes in on her own ODAC record time (4:27.25) set last season. Chappell-Dick then traveled to the Roanoke Invitational and helped her teammates finish second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:12.70.

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Candace Whittemore, Randolph-Macon, Fr., Pitcher
Whittemore, a freshman from Montpelier, Va., went 3-0 with a pair of shutouts against ODAC competition to pick up her second weekly award of the season. Whittemore opened with an 11-strikeout two-hitter in a 4-0 blanking of Bridgewater. She walked one batter in seven innings in the circle. She then went another full outing in topping Mary Washington, 2-1. She surrendered one unearned run on four this with a walk and seven punchouts. Whittemore capped her week with a five-hit shutout at Randolph, 4-0. She walked one and fanned four, giving her 22 strikeouts in 21 innings for the week. Whittemore leads the ODAC in wins as she moved to 12-2 on the season. She also leads the league with six shutouts and 89 strikeouts. She's second in innings pitched (93.1) and earned run average (1.50).

SOFTBALL - HITTER
Caley Hodge, Emory & Henry, So., Designated Player
Hodge, a sophomore from Elizabethton, Tenn., was blistering at the dish in the Wasps 4-2 week as she went 12-for-18 for a .667 batting average against ODAC foes. She also walked five times, giving her a .750 on-base percentage for the week. Hodge smacked four extra-base hits with three doubles and a homer while driving in eight runs and scoring six times. She was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in game two of a sweep of Guilford (2-0, 7-6). Despite a pair of loss to Eastern Mennonite, Hodge went 6-for-7 with two walks in the two games, driving in two runs and scoring twice. She kept at it in a sweep (12-9, 8-2) of Bridgewater, going 3-for-7 with two doubles and homer. She drove in six runs, including four in the second game, while also scoring twice. She finished the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage. For the season, Hodge is seventh in the ODAC with a .457 batting average. Her 37 hits are tied for first, and she's second in RBI with 30. Her .550 OBP is also second in the league.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Marina Bailey, Guilford, Sr., Midfielder
Bailey, a senior from Rockville, Md., led the Quakers to a pair of conference wins with an 11-point week. All 11 of Bailey's points came via goals, beginning with a career-high matching five goals in an 18-2 triumph over Randolph. She picked up five ground balls and two draws while causing a pair of turnovers. She was 3-for-4 on free position shots. Bailey established a new personal career-best with six goals on Saturday as Guilford topped Shenandoah, 15-12. She chipped in two draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover. For the season, Bailey is sixth in the ODAC with 35 points. Her 33 goals are tied for second, two off the top spot (Megan Schallock, VWC).

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Michelle Fleenor, Washington and Lee, So., #2/3 Singles, #1/2 Doubles
Fleenor, a sophomore from Chattanooga, Tenn., helped keep the 13th-ranked Generals rolling with two more wins last week, including an ODAC triumph and a national-ranked showdown. Fleenor competed at #3 singles and #2 doubles as the Generals took down nationally 18th-ranked Mary Washington, 5-4, to start the week. Fleenor defeated the 41st-rated singles player in the country, Shelby Harris, 7-6, 6-4. She and Rachel Hicks scored an 8-4 victory in doubles action. Fleenor moved to #2 singles and #1 doubles in the Generals 6-3 win over Roanoke. She won 6-2, 6-0 in singles play and joined Brooke Donnelly for an 8-1 doubles win.
