Lynchburg Names Johnson Director of Tennis

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Director of Athletics Jon Waters announced today that Chris Johnson has been appointed as the Director of Tennis. He will assume his duties effective immediately.

"We are excited to continue the growth of our tennis programs under the direction of Coach Johnson" said Waters " his background in collegiate tennis and recruiting in the mid-Atlantic give him a great foundation to help us build our men's and women's programs in a dynamic way."

Johnson most recently had served at Liberty University for the past 11 years, heading the Women's Tennis program for six years and the Men's Tennis program the entire time. During his time as the Women's Tennis Head Coach, the team accumulated 64 wins and boasted two Big South Players of the Year (2006 & 07) and Rookies of the Year (2008 & 10).

"I would like to thank Lynchburg College, Dr. Garren and Jon Waters for this wonderful opportunity. I'm very humbled and excited to start working in an athletics department with such deep tradition. Their goal of building athletes with strong character and integrity resonates perfectly with me. I would also like to thank my wife and family for their love and support. I look forward to getting to know the athletes and helping them be successful on and off the court."

In the past decade at the helm of the Men's Tennis program, Johnson led the Flames to 117 wins, including a Big South Player of the Year (2016), Rookie of the Year (2010), and multiple Big South Academic awards. He has mentored multiple ranked players, reaching as high as #93 in Singles and #19 in doubles.

In 2008, Johnson was named the Big South Women's Tennis Coach of the Year and was later named Big South Men's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2015. Johnson is one of only three coaches ever to have been named both Big South Men and Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.

Head of Men's UTSA Player Development and former University of Virginia Head Coach Brian Boland said, "I've known Chris for many years and his character and integrity are what you will see first. He has a passion and reputation for developing and mentoring athletes on and off the court. This is a great time for Lynchburg College tennis!"

Johnson, a native of Hickory, N.C., his wife Audrey and the couple's three children, Landon, Ashleigh and Alyssa, live in Forest, Va.
