ODAC Players of the Week - Week 1

FOREST, Va. --- The season started with outstanding performances by many, making the first set of weekly awards a standout set.  Those earning weekly awards include: Davey Hardesty from Bridgewater football, Jen Garrett from Lynchburg volleyball, Tre Frederick from Randolph-Macon football, Marissa Coombs from Virginia Wesleyan women's cross country, Alec Thibodeaux from Eastern Mennonite men's cross country, Erin Septer from Shenandoah women's soccer, Jordan Couch from Emory & Henry men's soccer, and Shelbi Holloman from Roanoke field hockey.

ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: September 6, 2016

FOOTBALL
Davey Hardesty, Bridgewater, Sr., Linebacker
Hardesty, a senior from Berryville, Va., helped Bridgewater to a 38-22 victory at Gettysburg College. The win featured a marked improvement by the Eagles' defense from its 49-10 loss in 2015 as BC held the Bullets scoreless until 7:28 of the fourth quarter. Hardesty backed up his defensive captaincy with six tackles that included a quarterback sack. His biggest play came early in the fourth frame when he intercepted a Gettsyburg passed and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown, giving Bridgewater a 31-0 lead with 14:30 to play. The interception was one of two turnovers forced by the Eagles' defense on the day.

FOOTBALL
Tre Frederick, Randolph-Macon, So., Running Back
Frederick, a sophomore from Angier, N.C., helped the Yellow Jackets post 51 points for the first time since 2011 with 223 all-purpose yards in Randolph-Macon's 51-0 triumph over Dickinson College. Frederick ran for a career-high 177 yards in his first outing as R-MC's lead running back. That effort included a 95-yard touchdown sprint to put the Yellow Jackets on top, 16-0, early in the second quarter. He finished his 19-carry day with a 9.3 per rush average. Frederick also returned a kickoff 46 yards to open the second half and lead to a touchdown. Frederick's 177 rushing yards led all ODAC backs in week one.

FIELD HOCKEY
Shelbi Holloman, Roanoke, Sr., Attack
Holloman, a senior from Suffolk, Va., helped the Maroons get off to a 2-0 start with wins at Ferrum and against Washington College. Holloman tallied twice in a 4-0 triumph over the Panthers, adding an assist on Roanoke's first goal of the season just 41-seconds into the contest at Ferrum. She followed that with another goal and two assists in a 4-2 victory over Washington. Holloman leads the ODAC thru the first weekend of competition with nine points.

MEN'S SOCCER
Jordan Couch, Emory & Henry, Jr., Forward
Couch, a junior from Abingdon, Va., started off the new season in record-breaking fashion with five goals and an assist to help the Wasps to two victories. On opening night, Couch scored the second goal in a 3-0 win at Ferrum. He then had a hand in five for E&H's seven goals in a 7-1 romp at Valley Forge. He found the back of the net four times, tying a school record in the process. The hat-trick (plus one) was the first for an Emory & Henry men's soccer player since 2011 (Luis Peralta). Couch added an assist against UVF, ranking second all-time at E&H with nine points in one game.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Erin Septer, Shenandoah, Sr., Goalkeeper
Septer, a senior from Hamilton, N.J., preserved a pair of shutouts in 180 minutes of action to help the Hornets start the season 2-0. Septer opened the season with three stops and Shenandoah went on the road to defeat Franklin & Marshall College. She backed that up with two more saves in a 2-0 triumph over Juniata College. Dating back to last season, Septer has allowed one or fewer goals in 14 straight appearances, a string that includes eight shutouts.

VOLLEYBALL
Jen Garrett, Lynchburg, Sr., Outside Hitter
Garrett, a senior from Forest, Va., helped the Hornets open the season with five victories in their first five matches. That included a 4-0 showing at the EMU Invitational in which Garrett earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. She hammered 80 kills over the five matches, including 66 at the tournament. She hit .267 for the week and added 60 digs and nine total blocks. Garrett had no fewer than nine kills in a match, registering a weekly-best 25 kills and a .400 attack percentage with 13 digs in a 3-1 win over Salem. She had 17 kills, 17 digs and three blocks in a 3-1 win over Catholic, and followed that with 15 and 14 winners in 3-1 and 3-0 victories over Hood and Ferrum, respectively. Garrett's 80 kills currently lead all ODAC players in the young season.

CROSS COUNTRY
Alec Thibodeaux, Eastern Mennonite, Sr.
Thibodeaux, a senior from Mount Sidney, Va., started the season with a strong six-kilometer showing at the Galen Piper Challenge hosted by Shippensburg University (Pa.). Thibodeaux was the second overall collegiate finisher in the event, chiming in with a time of 19:25.0. That placed fifth among all competitors in the 107-man field.

CROSS COUNTRY
Marissa Coombs, Virginia Wesleyan, Jr.
Coombs, a junior from Newton, N.J., started off the new season in winning fashion as she stopped the watches first at the Eagle Cross Country Challenge hosted by Bridgewater. Her time of 15:30.98 best second place by 14-seconds over the four-kilometer track.
