ODAC Players of the Week - Week 23

FOREST, Va. --- A few spring sports join basketball and indoor track in this set of weekly awards, adding to a strong batch of performances over the past seven days. Those earning weekly awards include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Connor Schroeder from Lynchburg men's basketball, Jeffrey Butler from Randolph-Macon baseball, Cary Beahm from Roanoke women's basketball, David Goulding from Lynchburg baseball, Danyelle McGrady from Shenandoah women's indoor track, Darin Council from Bridgewater men's indoor track, Natalie Deacon from Lynchburg women's indoor track, DJ Petty from Randolph men's indoor track, and Hunter Brown from Hampden-Sydney men's lacrosse.

Thru Week Prior to: February 13, 2017

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Cary Beahm, Roanoke, Sr., Forward
Beahm, a senior from Dendron, Va., put together a strong week in leading Roanoke to a pair of conference wins. Twice Beahm poured in 23 points as the Maroons earned a 70-54 road win at Randolph and a 75-51 home triumph over Shenandoah. Against the WildCats, Beahm added 15 rebounds (including six offensive) to her 23 points, which included a 9-of-12 showing from the foul line. She added a steal and a blocked shot and didn't turn the ball over. Versus Shenandoah, Beahm came up one board shy of her second double-double with nine boards to go with 23 markers. She was 10-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. For the season, Beahm is third in the ODAC in both scoring (19.3 ppg) and rebounding (9.2 rpg) average. She is #1 in field goals made (166), second in free throws made (108), and third in free throw percentage (85.0%).

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Connor Schroeder, Lynchburg, So., Forward
Schroeder, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Va., picks up his second weekly award of the season after leading Lynchburg to a pair of conference victories. Schroeder poured in 29 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field that included 7-of-8 from beyond the arc in a 95-72 win over Randolph. He chipped in three boards and a steal while hitting both of his foul shots. In a 78-72 win over Randolph-Macon, Schroeder hit three more from deep as part of a 7-for-13 shooting day on the way to 17 points. He added eight rebounds and a steal. For the season, Schroeder is seventh in the ODAC in points scored (342) and scoring average (15.5). He is third in three-pointers made (56), sixth in rebounding (7.3 rpg) and seventh in field goals made (128).

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Danyelle McGrady, Shenandoah, Sr., Throws
McGrady, a senior from Luray, Va., picks up her third field athlete award of the season after a strong showing in the throws at the Finn Pincus Invitational. McGrady won the weight throw with a school-record toss of 16.02 meters (52' 6.75"), further strengthening her hold on the #1 position in the ODAC seasonal ranks. She is currently 0.16 meters from tying the ODAC record. Her throw of 16.02 meters is ranked 26th in NCAA Division III. McGrady also threw the shot put, posting a mark of 10.87 meters (35' 8.0") to finish seventh overall and move into fourth on the ODAC season chart.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Darin Council, Bridgewater, Sr.
Council, a senior from Stafford, Va., was at his best at the Finn Pincus Invitational. Council competed in three events, leaping to #1 in the ODAC in the shot put with a toss of 13.83 meters (45' 4.5") to place sixth overall in the event. He finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 14.06 meters (46' 1.5"), which is second only to his previous ODAC-best jump (14.41m). Council added an 18th place showing in the weight throw at 12.37 meters (40' 7"), moving to #6 in the conference.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Natalie Deacon, Lynchburg, Sr., Mid-Distance
Deacon, a senior from West Chester, Pa., continued her strong season moving over from the Hornets soccer ranks to becoming an indoor track standout. She took over the #1 spot in the ODAC in the 800-meter run following her performance at the Finn Pincus Invitational. Her time of 2:15.73 won the race and places her more than three seconds ahead of the next fastest league competitor this season. Deacon's time is currently 11th in NCAA Division III.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
DJ Petty, Randolph, So., Hurdles/Sprints
Petty, a sophomore from Mechanicsville, Va., picks up his second weekly honor after strong showings in a pair of events at the Finn Pincus Invitational. Petty twice took over the top spot in the conference in the 60-meter dash. In the prelims, he posted a time of 0:07.02 before finishing second overall and first among Division III competitors with a time of 0:07.01. Both times set and/or reset the school record, and his finals time is 39th in the country. Petty added an event victory in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 0:08.37, which is good for second-best in his career and bettered only in the ODAC by his previous season-best mark (8.31) and that of his teammate, Anthony Quinn (8.30).

BASEBALL - PITCHER
David Goulding, Lynchburg, Jr., Starting Pitcher
Goulding a junior from Lynchburg, Va., put together 15 solid innnings over two starts, going 1-0 with a complete-game victory in an 8-2 win at Averett. In that game, Goulding gave up two runs (one earned) while scattering six hits and walking one in 9.0 frames. He fanned four in his first win of the year. Early in the week, Goulding went 6.0 innings towards a no-decision in a 6-5 loss at Methodist. He gave up three runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts. For the season, Goulding is 1-0 with a 2.40 earned run average and 10 strikeouts in 15.0 innings on the hill.

BASEBALL - PLAYER
Jeffrey Butler, Randolph-Macon, So., Infielder
Butler, a sophomore from Chesapeake, Va., helped Randolph-Macon open the season with a sweep of St. Mary's (Md.). Butler reached base safely in eight of his first nine plate appearances, registering five hits in six official at bats. He was 3-for-3 with a run, two RBI, two walks, and two stolen bases in an 8-1 win in game one. He followed with a 2-for-3 showing in a 9-3 win game two. He scored once and drove in another run, walked for a third time in the series, and swiped his third bag. Butler is hitting .833 with a .889 on-base percentage.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Hunter Brown, Hampden-Sydney, Jr., Midfielder
Brown, a junior from Charlottesville, Va., opened his season with a seven-point game in the Tigers 13-9 victory over Mary Washington. Brown, who led the ODAC with 33 assists in 2016, beat the keeper four times himself while setting up three teammates on goals to account for a new career-high in points. After being personally shutout in the first period, Brown registered at least two points in each of the remaining three quarters to help give Jason Rostan his first victory as Hampden-Sydney's head coach. Brown added three ground balls to his stat line.
