ODAC Players of the Week - Week 28

FOREST, Va. --- The first day of spring brings about the first full report for spring sports with a complete list of 14 honorees. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Teresa Wagner from Roanoke softball, Chase Mayberry from Hampden-Sydney baseball, Caley Hodge from Emory & Henry softball, Cole Migliorini from Randolph-Macon baseball, Robert Quinilty from Washington and Lee men's golf, Christina Herbert from Bridgewater women's golf, Hunter Brown from HSC men's lacrosse, Jess Castelo from W&L women's lacrosse, Brooke Donnelly from W&L women's tennis, Matthew Moody from HSC men's tennis, Dana Lee from W&L women's track, Connor Faint from Eastern Mennonite men's track, Trevanna Berryman from Randolph women's track, and Dash Dericks from W&L men's track.

ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: March 20, 2017

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Teresa Wagner, Roanoke, So., Pitcher
Wagner, a sophomore from Haymarket, Va., put together a pair of strong outings in earning two wins last week. Wagner opened with 6.0 innings of work towards an 8-2 win over Greensboro. She gave up two unearned runs on one hit with a walk and four strikeouts. She then spearheaded the Maroons' effort in a 3-1 in eight innings over 11th-ranked Christopher Newport. She went 7.2 innings and gave up just one run on four hits. She walked one and fanned two batters. For the season, Wagner is 5-0 with a 0.43 earned run average, which ranks second in the ODAC. She has struck out 17 batters in 32.2 innings of work with a .109 opponents' batting average, which is third in the league.

BASEBALL - PITCHER
Chase Mayberry, Hampden-Sydney, Fr., Starting Pitcher
Mayberry, a freshman from Appomattox., Va., is the second straight first-year pitcher to claim the ODAC's weekly honor. Mayberry tossed a complete-game with nine strong frames in defeating conference foe Emory & Henry, 10-0, over the weekend. Have gave up just five hits and walked one on the way to shutout victory, adding in six strikeouts. For the season, Mayberry is 3-0 with a 1.34 earned run average in five appearances. He's fanned 30 in 33.2 innings of work.

SOFTBALL - PLAYER
Caley Hodge, Emory & Henry, Jr., Third Base
Hodge, a junior from Elizabethton, Tenn., helped the Wasps to a 5-1 week after posting an strong .600/.700/.733 slash line in 20 plate appearances. Hodge went 9-for-15 with five walks to account for her 14 times reaching base. She smacked a pair of doubles amongst her three multi-hit games, drove in four runs, and scored five more times. She was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, a run scored, and two walks in a 4-2 win ove Cumberland (Ky.). She followed that with two more hits and a walk with three runs scored in a 10-2 triumph over Framingham St. She also performed well against traditional power Washington-St. Louis despite a 15-5 setback, going 3-for-4 on the day. For the season, Hodge is third in the ODAC with a .480 batting average. She is second in on-base percentage (.587), third in walks (11), fourth in doubles (6), and seventh in slugging (.660).

BASEBALL - PLAYER
Cole Migliorini, Randolph-Macon, Jr., Outfielder
Migliorini, a junior from Stafford, Va., swung a powerful bat in the Yellow Jackets sweep at Guilford, registering four extra-base hits amongst his five total knocks. In game one, Migliorini went 3-for-5 with a double and a homer in a 15-4 victory. He scored four runs with two more driven in. In an 11-4 win in game two, Migliorini went 2-for-4 with both hits leaving the yard for three homers on the weekend. He drove in four runs and scored two more with a walk. He finished with a .556/.600/1.667 slash line. For the season, Migliorini is hitting .317 with an ODAC second-best five homeruns. He has racked up 17 RBI.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Christina Herbert, Bridgewater, Jr.
Herbert, a junior from Williamsburg, Va., is now 2-for-2 with top-10 finishes this spring after tying for fourth at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate last week. After a tough opening 81 in the three-round affair, Herbert rebounded with a 76 in round two and a 75 on the final set of 18 holes to finish just two strokes off the pace at 16-over 232. Bridgewater chimed in 15th out of 23 teams at 1,008 (346-335-327) at Indian Mounds Golf Course, which was set at 5,801 yards and par 72 for the competition.

MEN'S GOLF
Robert Quinilty, Washington and Lee, Fr.
Quinilty, a freshman from Cypress, Texas, is the second straight Generals' first-year golfer to corral the ODAC's weekly honor. Quinilty tied for fifth at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate, which featured 15 of the top 25 teams in the country. He finished at 1-under 215 after three rounds on the 6,700-yard par 72 track at Pine Lakes Golf Course. He opened with an even 72 before going one over the mark at 73 in round two. He finished up with a 2-under 70 to pull into a tie with three other golfers just three shots off the winning 212 total posted by Jacob Arnett from Oglethorpe. Washington and Lee placed seventh out of 29 competing teams.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Jess Castelo, Washington and Lee, Jr., Attack
Castelo, a junior from Red Bank, N.J., registered eight points to help Washington and Lee to a pair of wins last week. Castelo opened with two goals and two assists in the Generals' 14-2 win over previously ranked St. Mary's (Md.). She added a caused turnover in that contest. Castelo followed with four goals as nationally fourth-ranked Washington and Lee thumped #9 Catholic, 18-3. She added three ground balls to her line in that game. For the season, Castelo has registered 12 points on eight goals and four assists.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Hunter Brown, Hampden-Sydney, Jr., Midfielder
Brown, a junior from Charlottesville, Va., put up a 14-point week as Hampden-Sydney rolled to a pair of victories last week. In a 17-8 win at Southern Virginia, Brown scored three times and dished out five assists. He added a pair of ground balls to his line. He was back at it again in a second 17-8 win over H-SC, this time at Shenandoah. Brown scored twice to go with four assists and four ground balls. For the season, Brown is second in the ODAC with 37 points, eighth with 19 goals, and third with 18 assists.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Brooke Donnelly, Washington and Lee, Sr., #1 Singles, #1 Doubles
Donnelly, a senior from Kennesaw, Ga., put together a stellar week in going 4-0 at #1 singles and 2-2 at #1 doubles in four matches against nationally-ranked opponents. Washington and Lee, ranked sixth in the country by the ITA, posted 9-0, 5-4, and 7-2 wins over #7 Whitman College, #20 Trinity (Texas) University, and #22 Skidmore College surrounding a 7-2 loss to #2 Williams College. Donnelly, rated third in the Atlantic South Region, defeated Andrea Gu from Whitman, 6-0, 6-1, and took down the West Region's seventh ranked player in TU's Liza Southwick, 6-4, 7-5. She captured a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Skidmore's Madie Benn, and grabbed one of the Generals' two points against Williams with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 triumph over Leah Bush, the eighth-ranked player in the Northeast Region. Donnelly and doubles partner Tessa Hill earned at 8-1 win over West #6 Mary Hill and Hanna Greenburg from Whitman and an 8-2 victory over TU's Marie Lutz and Zoe Kaffen. The Generals' duo fell 8-7 to Northeast #14 Benn and Michelle Fuca from Skidmore and 8-7 to Williams' Hannah Atkinson and Chloe Henderson, the Northeast's fourth-ranked tandem.

MEN'S TENNIS
Matthew Moody, Hampden-Sydney, Fr., #1 Singles, #1 Doubles
Moody, a freshman from Raleigh, N.C., helped the Tigers to a 1-1 week after rolling to a 4-0 showing at #1 singles and #1 doubles. Despite a 6-3 team loss to Salisbury, Moody picked up a 7-6 (10-8), 1-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory in handing Colt Williamson his first loss of the season. He and his brother, Michael, downed Williamson and Ian Siew, 8-6, in doubles play. In an 8-1 win over Virginia State, Moody won 6-2, 6-2 in singles action and again joined his brother for an 8-4 victory in the doubles competition.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Trevanna Berryman, Randolph, Jr., Throws
Berryman, a freshman from Lynchburg, Va., placed her name atop two ODAC top rankings in the early going as part of a three-event performance at the W&L Carnival. Berryman won the discuss with a toss of 38.51 meters (126' 4.0") and chimed in third in the shot put at 10.89 meters (35' 8.75"). She also competed in the hammer throw, whipping the apparatus 22.38 meters (73' 5.0") to finish 19th overall.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Dash Dericks, Washington and Lee, Jr., Throws
Dericks, a junior from Spring, Texas, put his name atop the ODAC early season leaders in a pair of events in the throws at the W&L Carnival. Dericks won the javelin with a toss of 55.90 meters (183' 5.0"), which is just a bit more than six-feet better than the next closests ODAC competitor. Dericks was the top Division III finisher and second overall in the discus with a heave of 43.63 meters (143' 2.0"). His javelin mark is ninth and his discuss throw is 14th in the early D-III rankings.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Dana Lee, Washington and Lee, Sr., Sprints/Jumps
Lee, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., starred in both track and field events at the W&L Carnival. Lee won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.74 seconds. That ranks seventh in the early listings for NCAA Division III results. Lee also won the triple jump at 11.07 meters (36' 4.0"), which is fifth in D-III. Both marks top the early ODAC rankings.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Connor Faint, Eastern Mennonite, Jr., Hurdles/Sprints
Faint, a junior from Winchester, Va., didn't take long to make a splash in the outdoor ranks with an event victory at the W&L Carnival. Faint won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.34 seconds, which is tops in the ODAC and currently #1 in the very early rankings of NCAA Division III. The mark would have ranked 18th in the country at season's end in 2016.
