ODAC Players of the Week - Week 29

FOREST, Va. --- Spring schedules filled with a few more conference games over the past week as ODAC teams return from spring break and associated trips. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Kiersten Richardson from Virginia Wesleyan softball, Anderson Baldy from Washington and Lee baseball, Hanna Hull from VWC softball, Amanda Dionne from Guilford women's lacrosse, Ian Levin from Hampden-Sydney men's lacrosse, Michelle Fleenor from W&L women's tennis, Will Bannister from W&L men's tennis, Carter Morgan from VWC men's golf, Katelyn Senger from Bridgewater women's track, Dash Dericks from W&L mens' track, Amanda Lee from W&L women's track, Evan Truman from Lynchburg men's track, and Nick Bay from VWC baseball.

ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: March 27, 2017

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Hanna Hull, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr., Pitcher
Hull, a freshman from Chesterfield, Va., continues to shine in her first season for nationally third-ranked Virginia Wesleyan as she recorded three more victories, three double-figure strikeout games, and allowed just one run over 20 innings in the circle last week. She opened with a complete game three-hit shutout of Mary Washington in the Marlins 3-0 victory. She walked four and struck out 14 batters. Hull followed that with six strong frames in a 2-1 victory over Randolph. She gave up one run on one-hit with three walks and 14 more strikeouts. Hull capped her week with a two-hit shutout of Shenandoah in Virginia Wesleyan's 2-0 victory. She walked one and fanned 11 hitters. For the season, Hull is 12-1 and leads the ODAC in all major pitching categories including wins, innings pitched (77.0), earned run average (0.27), strikeouts (141), and shutouts (6). Her .115 opponents' batting average is second.

BASEBALL - PITCHER
Nick Bay, Virginia Wesleyan, Jr., Starting Pitcher
Bay, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., picked up a pair of wins in his two starts last week, including a conference victory on the road at Guilford. Bay opened with six solid innings in a 9-4 non-conference win at Mary Washington. He gave up three runs with one earned on just one hit. He walked five batters and off-set those with eight strikeouts. In a 5-2 win over Guilford, Bay worked 7.0 frames and surrendered just five base runners on three hits and two walks. He gave up two runs and struck out three, giving him 11 punchouts in 13.0 total innings on the week. For the season, Bay is now 3-1 with a 4.02 earned run average in 31.1 innings with 18 strikeouts.

SOFTBALL - PLAYER
Kiersten Richardson, Virginia Wesleyan, Jr., Shortstop
Richardson, a junior from Richmond, Va., picks up her second weekly award after helping the Marlins to six victories including four ODAC wins. Richardson went 5-for-15 with five walks and 15 stolen bases on the week. She had a pair of doubles, drove in two runs, and scored eight times herself. She had nine stolen bases in a non-conference sweep of Mary Washington, including six in a 7-3 win in game two. She had three steals with two RBI in a 7-0 victory over Randolph, and registered at least one stolen base in the remaining three games to drive her season total to an ODAC-leading 39 stolen bases. For the season, Richardson is hitting .439 with a .520 on-base percentage, which rank fifth and fourth in the ODAC, respectively. She leads the conference in runs scored (40) and doubles (13) in addition to stolen bases. She is second with 36 hits.

BASEBALL - PLAYER
Anderson Baldy, Washington and Lee, Sr., Designated Hitter/Pitcher
Baldy, a senior from Tampa, Fla., put together a .615/.706/1.000 slash line as Washington and Lee rattled off four conference victories with sweeps at Eastern Mennonite and against Lynchburg. Baldy went 8-for-13 with a triple, homer and five runs driven in over the four games. He scored seven runs and walked three times to help account for his .706 OBP. Baldy was a major player in the Generals' 11-9 comeback win over EMU in game one. He went 3-for-4 for the game and ripped a game-tying two-run triple in the eighth. He crashed a homer in the nightcap on his way to three more hits in a 15-4 triumph. Against Lynchburg, Baldy had a hit in each game, and reached base three more times with walks as W&L claimed 10-2 and 7-6 victories. He also tossed three innings of relief in game two. For the season, Baldy is hitting .441 with a .548 OBP and a .765 slugging percentage. He is tied for fifth in the ODAC with three homeruns.

MEN'S GOLF
Carter Morgan, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr.
Morgan, a freshman from Tappahannock, Va., earned his first collegiate victory at the Marlin Invitational last week. Morgan finished as the lone player under par in the 30-man event, helping Virginia Wesleyan to the team title with a 23-over 599 (298-301). Morgan opened with a 2-under 70 on the 7,007-yard par 72-track at Sleepy Hole Golf Course in Suffolk, Va. He carded a 1-over 73 in the final round to clinch a five-stroke victory over teammate Keith Cooper (73-75). In seven total events, this is the first top-five and third top-10 showing for Morgan. He now owns a 77.1 per round average thru 14 rounds of competition.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Amanda Dionne, Guilford, So., Attack
Dionne, a sophomore from Nashua, N.H., helped the Quakers collect a pair of wins last week with a seven-point showing. Dionne opened with five goals in an 11-10 victory over Greensboro. It was her tally with 53-seconds to play that send the Quakers on to victory. She converted both her free position attempts and added two ground balls and two draw controls. Dionne added a goal and an assist as the Quakers cruised to a 21-0 triumph at Sweet Briar. She added two ground balls and a draw control. For the season, Dionne is third in the ODAC in points (29) and second with 24 goals scored.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Ian Levin, Hampden-Sydney, Jr., Attack
Levin a junior from Chapel Hill, N.C., racked up 11 points in the Tigers 2-0 week that featured a conference victory over Randolph-Macon. Levin started his week with eight points on six goals and two assists in a 12-6 non-conference win over Sewanee. He capped his week with two goals and an assist in a 12-9 victory over the Yellow Jackets. For the season, Levin is third in the ODAC in points (41) and tied for first in goals scored (29) with two other players, including teammate Chandler Shaheen.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Michelle Fleenor, Washington and Lee, Jr., #3 Singles, #2 Doubles
Fleenor, a junior from Chattanooga, Tenn., was the deciding factor in the top-16 matchup for Washington and Lee women's tennis last week. The Generals, rated 16th in the country by the ITA, took down 10th ranked Carnegie Mellon, 5-4. Fleenor and teammate Lauren Hassell dropped a tight #2 doubles match to Vinaya Rao and Courtney Ollis, 9-7. But Fleenor recovered for a 6-0, 6-7, 6-1 victory at #3 singles over Jamie Vizelman, the #13 ranked player in the Atlantic South Region. The point Fleenor earned was the deciding factor in Washington and Lee team victory. Fleenor is now 8-2 in overall singles matches and 7-3 in doubles play.

MEN'S TENNIS
Will Bannister, Washington and Lee, Sr., #2 Singles, #1 Doubles
Bannister, a senior from Bath, England, went 4-0 in singles play at the #2 flight and 2-2 at #1 doubles as Washington and Lee went 3-1 in four matches last week. Bannister and teammate Charlie Kittredge won 8-6 at doubles against Bridgewater, with Bannister adding a 6-2, 6-0 win in singles action. He then grabbed singles wins against Hampden-Sydney and 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon via 6-3, 6-4 and 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 results, respectively. He and Kittredge fell in a tight doubles showdown with H-SC, 9-7, and dropped an 8-4 decision to CMU. Bannister rebounded for an 8-3 win with Jordan Krasner in doubles play against Guilford, and capped his week with a 7-5, 7-5 singles victory. For the season, Bannister is 12-6 in singles play and 12-9 with all partners in doubles matches.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD EVENTS
Katelyn Senger, Bridgewater, Sr., Throws
Senger, a senior from Bridgewater, Va., posted a trio of ODAC top-four marks in the throws at the Dr. Jack Toms Invitational. Senger shined in the discus, taking over the #1 spot in the league and winning the event with a heave of 41.30 meters (135' 6.25"). That is ranked sixth in NCAA Division III. Senger added a sixth place finish in the shot put at 11.00 meters (35' 1.25"), and chimed in ninth in the hammer at 37.26 meters (122' 3.25"). Those distances ranked fourth and third in the ODAC, respectively.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD EVENTS
Dash Dericks, Washington and Lee, Jr., Throws
Dericks, a junior from Spring, Texas, picks up his second straight weekly award after another strong showing in the throws at the Dr. Jack Toms Invitational. Dericks won the discus competition with a throw of 45.59 meters (149' 3.0"), which is currently ranked 19th in the early NCAA Division III standings. Dericks also posted a top-three mark in the javelin, finishing fourth overall with a throw of 53.31 meters (174' 11.0"). That would be a top-three mark in the league rankings, just short of his previous season best of 55.90 meters.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK EVENTS
Dana Lee, Washington and Lee, Sr., Sprints/Jumps
Lee, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., stood out for a second straight week both on the track and in field events at the Dr. Jack Toms Invitational. On the track, Lee finished fourth overall and took over the ODAC's top spot with a time of 25.71 seconds in the 200-meter dash. That time is ranked 15the country. She also helped W&L to third in the 4x100-meter relay at 49.75 seconds, which is second in the ODAC. As for field events, Lee placed fifth overall in both the long and triple jumps. Her mark of 5.47 meters (17' 11.50") is second in the ODAC. She posted a best jump of 10.92 meters (35' 10.0") in the triple jump, which is second in the ODAC only to her previous season-best mark of 11.07 meters (36' 4.0").

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK EVENTS
Evan Truman, Lynchburg, Sr., Sprints/Jumps
Truman, a senior from Richmond, Va., put his name atop three events on the ODAC season rankings after a strong performance at the Dr. Jack Toms Invitational. On the track, Truman now owns the conference's fastest times in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes while also helping Lynchburg to an ODAC-best and event-winning 42.22-seconds in the 4x100-meter relay. He finished third in the 100-dash in 10.74 seconds, and was fourth in the 200-dash in 22.07 seconds. Both are personal-best times and ranked second and 15th in NCAA Division III, respectively. Truman also stood out in the long jump, tying for first in the event with an ODAC season-best leap of 7.03 meters (23' 0.75"). That is currently second in the country with Bridgewater's Brandon Christian, who tied Truman for the event victory.
