ODAC Players of the Week - Week 32

FOREST, Va. --- Spring championships are right around the corner, and ODAC athletes continue to gear up for runs in the postseason. Those earning weekly awards include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Cole Migliorini from Randolph-Macon baseball, Taylor Carter from Roanoke softball, Colin Morse from Shenandoah baseball, Hanna Hull from Virginia Wesleyan softball, Morgan Barlow from RC women's lacrosse, Evan Lombardo from Lynchburg men's lacrosse, Kateri Johnson from Hollins tennis, Paul Gladstone from Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis, Evan Truman from LC men's track, Lizzy Stanton from Washington and Lee women's track, Mac Strehler from W&L men's track, Marissa Coombs from VWC women's track, Alex Nelson from R-MC men's golf, and Christina Herbert from Bridgewater women's golf.

ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: April 17, 2017

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Hanna Hull, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr., Pitcher
Hull, a freshman from Chesterfield, Va., added three more ODAC wins to her impressive first-year stat line as she is now leading NCAA Division III with a 20-1 record thru 24 total appearances. Hull earned two more shutouts amongst her three victories, giving her an ODAC-best eight on the season. Her first one came via a five-inning shortened 10-0 complete game win at Eastern Mennonite. She gave up just two hits and fanned 10 without a walk. The 10 strikeouts mark her 12th double figure strikeout game of the season. Hull returned to the circle for the final four outs against the Royals, earning the win in the process of an 8-4 Marlins triumph. She then went the distance in a 5-0 shutout at Lynchburg. She surrendered just three hits and walked a pair. She struck out seven in a full seven frames, bringing her to an ODAC and NCAA Division III leading 216 punchouts.

BASEBALL - PITCHER
Colin Morse, Shenandoah, Jr., Starting Pitcher
Morse, a junior from Vienna, Va., went the distance as Shenandoah to guide Shenandoah to a 3-2 victory over Hampden-Sydney and recover from a 15-7 setback to the Tigers in game one of the weekend series. Morse surrendered two runs on just three hits. He walked four batters, but offset those free passes with a season-high 12 strikeouts that included fanning the side to open the game. He retired seven straight batters at one point, and didn't allow a runner to reach second base after the fifth inning. For the season, Morse is now 7-0 wiht a 2.34 earned run average in 57.2 innings of work. He leads the ODAC with 56 strikeouts.

SOFTBALL - PLAYER
Taylor Carter, Roanoke, Jr., Outfielder
Carter, a junior from Roanoke, Va., reached base in all five games and proved a disruption on the basepaths in helping the Maroons to a 4-0 week in conference play. Carter went 7-for-13 with two doubles, six runs scored, a walk, and five stolen bases to help her to a .538/.571/.692 slash line. She doubled as part of a two-hit day with a stolen base in a 3-2 win over Bridgewater. She smacked three more hits in a 9-1 victory in game two, driving in a run and swiping two more bags. Carter walked and scored to help Roanoke to a 4-0 victory over in game one against Eastern Mennonite. She came back with two hits including a double, scored two more runs and stole an additional two bases in a 4-1 victory in game two. For the season, Carter his hitting .318 with a .392 on-base percentage and a .458 slugging percentage. She is second in the league with 29 stolen bases and ninth with 30 runs scored.

BASEBALL - PLAYER
Cole Migliorini, Randolph-Macon, Jr., Outfielder
Migliorini, a junior from Stafford, Va., collected five extra-base hits amongst his nine knocks to help the Yellow Jackets to a 3-1 week. Migliorini posted a .563/.632/1.250 slash line as he went 9-for-16 with a double, two triples, two homers, seven runs scored and nine more driven in. He also walked three times and stole a base. Migliorini opened his week with two triples and a pair of RBI in a 13-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan. He doubled and homer in a 10-6 victory over York and then collected three hits with two RBI in a 6-5 setback to Eastern Mennonite. He drilled a three-run shot down the leftfield line in the nightcap at EMU, helping R-MC pull out a 9-7 victory. For the season, Migliorini is hitting .395 with a .493 OBP and an ODAC-best .781 slugging percentage. He leads the league with nine homers and 89 total bases and is fourth in runs scored (38) and triples (4).

WOMEN'S GOLF
Christina Herbert, Bridgewater, Jr.
Herbert, a junior from Williamsburg, Va., capped the regular season just as she started it by claiming her fifth weekly award of the season. Herbert won both days of the dual individual-round Hollins Spring Invitational tournaments competed at Glade Spring. On the first day, she won by four strokes as she fired a 4-under 69 on the 5,803-yard par-73 layout on the Cobb Course at Glade Spring. Bridgewater captured the team win by four strokes over Piedmont at 333. Herbert returned to the Cobb Course on day two and again went under par with a 72 to win by two strokes. The Eagles again captured a four-stroke team victory, but lowered its combined total to 318. Herbert will enter the ODAC Tournament with a league-best 73.8 average over 17 rounds of competition.

MEN'S GOLF
Alex Nelson, Randolph-Macon, Fr.
Nelson, a freshman from Weems, Va., picks up his first weekly award of the season after finishing as the runner-up in an 80-man field at the Glenn Heath Shipbuilders Memorial. An opening round 77 on the 6,822-yard par-72 track at the Williamsburg Club found Nelson well outside the top-10. He stormed back on day-two with a tournament-low 69 to finish at 2-over 146 and three strokes back of individual champion David Rabil from Christopher Newport. The 69 marked Nelson's second-lowest round of the season and his second sub-70 round in his last four outings. His efforts helped Randolph-Macon to second place at 612 (308-304) in a field of 13 other programs.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Morgan Barlow, Roanoke, Fr., Midfielder
Barlow, a freshman from South Hamilton, Mass., helped lead the Maroons to a pair of conference victories including a 10-9 overtime thriller at Lynchburg. Barlow kicked off her seven-point week with two goals, two ground balls, a draw control, and a caused turnover in a 13-5 triumph at Guilford. She then starred in the overtime win at Lynchburg, scoring four goals while dishing out an assists and coming away with two ground balls. Barlow's third goal of the game tied the score at 9-all with 59-seconds left in regulation to force overtime. She then converted on a free position shot at the 2:50 mark of the first overtime period, securing the victory for Roanoke. For the season, Barlow is ninth in the ODAC with 22 goals scored and is second on the team with 23 points.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Evan Lombardo, Lynchburg, So., Attack
Lombardo, a sophomore from Franklin Park, N.J., picks up his second weekly award after leading Lynchburg to a pair of ODAC wins last week. Lombardo started off his 11-point week with five goals and a pair of assists in an 18-7 victory over Randolph. He then helped the Hornets create some space in the ODAC standings with two goals and two assists in a 16-10 over Hampden-Sydney. The triumph moved Lynchburg to 6-1 on the ODAC charts, tied with Roanoke for second and just a half-game back of 6-0 Washington and Lee. For the season, Lombardo is seventh in the ODAC with 50 points on an ODAC third-best 39 goals to go with 11 assists.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Kateri Johnson, Hollins, Fr., #4/5 Singles, #3 Doubles
Johnson, a freshman from Shakopee, Minn., put together a 6-0 week at #4 and #5 singles and #3 doubles as she helped Hollins rattled off three team victories including a pair of wins in conference play. Johnson and partner Casey Mahan claimed all three doubles wins at the third flight in HU's 6-3 win over Sweet Briar, 9-0 victory over Trinty (D.C.), and 5-4 triumph over Shenandoah. They won 8-1 over SBC, 8-0 against TU, and 8-3 in the week-capper versus SU. Johnson posted a pair of wins at #5 singles and one at the fourth flight, and dropped only four games in doing so. She won 6-1, 6-0 over SBC at #5 and duplicated the effort at #4 singles against Trinity. She finished her week with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at #5 over Shenandoah.

MEN'S TENNIS
Paul Gladstone, Virginia Wesleyan, So., #1 Singles, #2 Doubles
Gladstone, a sophomore form Port Orange, Fla., picks up his first weekly honor after going 4-0 at #1 singles and #2 doubles in a pair of ODAC matches last week. In doubles play, Gladstone and partner Joe Holloway earned at 8-4 win over Randolph-Macon and a 9-7 nail-biting triumph over Emory & Henry. Gladstone collected the remaining VWC point in its 7-2 team loss to R-MC, defeating the Yellow Jackets' #1 player 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7). He then added a straight sets 6-2, 6-0 win over his counterpart from E&H, helping VWC to a 9-0 team victory.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Lizzy Stanton, Washington and Lee, Sr., Pole Vault
Stanton, a senior from Papillion, Neb., won the pole vault competition at the WildCat Invitational over the weekend. She matched her season-high by clearing 3.55 meters (11' 7.75"). Entering the ODAC Championships, she owns the conference's best mark by nearly a foot.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Evan Truman, Lynchburg, Sr., Jumps
Truman, a senior from Richmond, Va., continued his strong season in the long jump at the WildCat Invitational. He wont the event with a leap of 6.89 meters (22' 7.25"), which would rank third on the ODAC chart had he not already tied atop the conference's long jump list (7.03m) earlier this season. Truman enters the ODAC Championships tied as the #1 seed in the long jump and solo #1 in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Marissa Coombs, Virginia Wesleyan, Jr., Mid-Distance
Coombs, a junior from Newton, N.J., strengthened her hold on the ODAC's top time in the 1,500-meter run at the New Captains Classic and Combined Events at Christopher Newport University. Coombs finished fourth overall in the event with a time of 4:33.15 to top the ODAC ranks by nearly four seconds. That time is also fifth in NCAA Division III.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Mac Strehler, Washington and Lee, Sr., Distance
Strehler, a senior from Moseley, Va., put together a school-record breaking performance in the 10,000-meter run at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Strehler broke his own record by over 30-seconds, placing 22nd overall and sixth in a heavy Division III invitation field with a time of 30:19.60. That is the top time in the ODAC by nearly three minutes and ranks ninth in NCAA Division III.
