FOREST, Va. --- A few ODAC sports started to enter into the conference portion of their schedules with performances continuing to ramp up. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Samantha Schreiber from Lynchburg women's cross country, Tristan Lucy-Speidel from LC men's cross country, Christina Herbert from Bridgewater women's golf, Walker Brand from Washington and Lee football, Ariyel Yavalar from W&L field hockey, Isaac Evans from Bridgewater football, Anna Sobus from BC women's soccer, Daniel Obour from Eastern Mennonite, Meg Guignon from W&L volleyball, and Josh Hill from Guilford men's golf.

ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: September 18, 2017

FOOTBALL - OFFENSE Walker Brand, Washington and Lee, Sr., Running Back Brand, a senior from Roanoke, Va., added to his impressive total of early season rushing touchdowns in helping Washington and Lee improve to 2-1 on the season with a 24-14 triumph at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Brand entered the contest with the Stags tied for the NCAA Division III lead with seven rushing scores and he added two more in the Generals second win of the season. He carried the ball 21 times for a career-high 154 yards that included a pair of one-yard scoring bursts. He did not lose any yards on any one of his 21 carries and had four runs of 10 yards or longer. He setup his first score with a 49-yard sprint before pounding it it for an early 7-0 lead. Brand's second TD came on W&L's first possession of the second half where he capped a 14-play drive in which he carried the ball 11 times and accounted for 74 of the series' 93 yards. FOOTBALL - DEFENSE Isaac Evans, Bridgewater, Jr., Cornerback Evans, a junior from Fredericksburg, Va., helped the Eagles limit Apprentice School to just 50 yards thru the air and 211 yards of offense overall in Bridgewater's 52-0 whitewashing of the Builders on Saturday. Evans not only helped BC post its first shutout since the 2013 season-opener (57-0 over St. Vincent), he put 12 points on the board with a pair of pick-sixes. He took back his first interception late in the first quarter, returning the ball 45 yards to paydirt for a 21-0 lead. He struck again at the outset of the second half, turning around his second interception 26 yards for a 31-0 advantage. Evans also contributed on special teams, blocking a 27-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter. Evans' two pick-sixes give him a school-record four for his career. FIELD HOCKEY Ariyel Yavalar, Washington and Lee, Jr., Goalkeeper Yavalar, a junior from Baltimore, Md., put together a strong week guarding the Generals cage in a pair of one-goal victories. Yavalar stepped up with three saves as Washington and Lee pulled out a 1-0 overtime victory over Elizabethtown. She then came up with 11 stops to help preserve a 2-1 victory over Juniata. For the season, Yavalar is second in the ODAC in goals-against-average (1.21) and save percentage (.805) and third in saves (33). Click to learn more about the past week in ODAC FIELD HOCKEY

MEN'S GOLF Josh Hill, Guilford, Jr. Hill, a junior from Superior, Colo., led a record-setting performance by the Quakers at the Tom Kinder Memorial. Hill finished in second place with a career-low 136 for 8-under-par following two rounds on the par-72 track set to 6,769 yards at Lakeview Golf Club. Hill opened with a 5-under 67, establishing a new personal career-best round. He posted a 3-under 69 in round two to post the fourth-lowest individual two-round total in school history and finish four strokes back of individual medalist Lance Keiser from Ferrum. Hill's 136 helped Guilford to a tournament- and school-record 16-under 560 team total, securing the second team title in as many starts for the Quakers this season. WOMEN'S GOLF Christina Herbert, Bridgewater, Sr. Herbert, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., picks up her second weekly award in as many opportunities after winning the Green Turtle/Shenandoah Invitational over the weekend. Herbert finished at even-par 144 after two rounds on the par-72 layout set to 5,862 yards at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club. Herbert opened with a 2-under 70 before capping her tournament with a 2-over 74. Both rounds were lowest of the tournament and helped her post a 12-stroke victory over the next closest competitor. MEN'S SOCCER Daniel Obour, Eastern Mennonite, So., Midfielder Obour, a sophomore from Alexandria, Va., helped the Royals' rack up their fifth straight win with four points in a pair of non-conference victories last week. Obour had a hand in both Eastern Mennonite goals in a 2-1 overtime win over Ferrum. He assisted Dave Drafton in the 15th minute for a 1-0 lead, and then came thru with the game-winning tally in the 99th minute, depositing a well-taken strike into the lower-left (far) corner. In a 3-2 win at Albright, Obour provided the goal-scoring feed to Juan Luna for the first goal of the game in the eighth minute. For the season, Obour has collected five points on a goal and three assists, the latter tying for first in the ODAC thru early non-conference action. WOMEN'S SOCCER Anna Sobus, Bridgewater, Sr., Forward Sobus, a senior from Spotsylanvia, Va., put together a nine-point week as she helped Bridgewater rack up three victories to move to 5-1-1 on the season. After the Eagles picked up a 1-0 win at St. Mary's (Md.), Sobus put BC ahead, 2-0, in the 17th minute on the way to a 3-0 triumph at N.C. Wesleyan. Sobus had a hand in four of BC's five goals in their third road win of the week, a 5-2 result at Methodist. She assisted on the Eagles' first-half tally and broke a 1-1 halftime stalemate with three goals in the 47th, 53rd, and 85th minutes for her first career hat trick. VOLLEYBALL Meg Guignon, Washington and Lee, Jr., Outside Hitter Guignon, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., picks up her second straight weekly honor after leading Washington and Lee to a 4-0 week that included three victories to open ODAC play. The Generals' captured each match via 3-0 results with Guignon racking up 45 kills for a 3.75 per set average. She hit .325 over the course of her 117 attack attempts, adding 33 digs and accounting for 47.0 total points for 3.9 per set. Guignon went for 14 kills and hit .609 with eight digs at Emory & Henry. She had 12 winners with nine digs and a pair of blocks versus Eastern Mennonite. She added 10 winners with 11 digs at Guilford, and finished her week with nine kills in a non-conference victory over Brevard. For the season, Guignon is third in the ODAC in kills (122) and kils per set (3.13) while sitting 10th in hitting (.265). Her 3.4 points per set average is fifth in the league. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Tristan Lucy-Speidel, Lynchburg, Jr. Lucy-Speidel, a junior from Fort Valley, Va., led the Hornets to first place in the non-Division I team standings at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. Lucy-Speidel completed the eight-kilometer course with a time of 26:17.8 to finish 51st overall and first among Division II and III athletes. Lynchburg racked up only 35 points to top the team chart. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Samantha Schreiber, Lynchburg, Jr. Schreiber, a junior from Gladys, Va., helped the Hornets to top prize in the non-NCAA Division I team standings at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. Schreiber finished 29th overall and tops among non-scholarship runners with a six-kilometer time of 22:55.8.
