ODAC Players of the Week - Week 7

FOREST, Va. --- Men's and women's swimming joins this week's report as the fall continues to wind down with the winter seasons beginning to gear up. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Marissa Coombs from Virginia Wesleyan women's cross country, Jamie Hiegel from Bridgewater men's cross country, Jackie Lerro from Lynchburg field hockey, Carter Morgan from VWU men's golf, Liza Lewis from Randolph-Macon women's golf, Tommy Thetford from Washington and Lee men's swimming, Emily Hageboeck from W&L women's swimming, Kyle Dexter from Shenandoah football, Miranda Hall from R-MC volleyball, Josh Breece from W&L football, Isabella Krider from BC women's soccer, and Christian Torres from R-MC men's soccer.

ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: October 16, 2017

FOOTBALL - DEFENSIVE
Kyle Dexter, Shenandoah, Jr., Linebacker
Dexter, a junior from Lexington Park, Md., helped the Hornets win for the fifth time in six games and move to 3-0 on the season in Saturday's 38-20 win over Bridgewater. Dexter posted game-high honors with 11 total tackles include six solo stops. He also was in on a pair of sacks, registering one solo effort and joining a teammate for a second quarterback hit that cost Bridgewater eight yards of offense. In a game where the SU offense took a bit of time to get rolling, Dexter helped led a defensive unit that surrendered just 20 points including a shutout in the third quarter in which the Hornets scored 21 of their 28 unanswered points thru the late second and entire third quarter. For the season, Dexter has notched 34 total tackles with 16 solo stops. The sacks this weekend were his first of the season.

FOOTBALL - OFFENSIVE
Josh Breece, Washington and Lee, Fr., Running Back
Breece, a freshman from Lorton, Va., is coming into his own as the Generals lead running back. The first-year runner exploded for a career-high 223 yards on 21 carries for a 10.6 per carry average. That is the most yards gained by a W&L rusher since Luke Heinsohn posted the same total in 2010. It ranks as the fourth-most in school history. Breece found the end zone four times, including the game's opening score via a 39-yard sprint thru the left side of the Quakers' defense. His other touchdown runs covered 7, 6, and 30 yards with the latter burst coming at the outset of the fourth quarter. Breece's efforts highlighted a Washington and Lee rushing attack that churned out 526 yards, the second-most for W&L this season and fourth-most in school and ODAC history. For the season Breece is second in the ODAC with 797 rushing yards and leads the ODAC in yards per rush (7.2) and rushing touchdowns (11).

FIELD HOCKEY
Jackie Lerro, Lynchburg, Fr., Forward
Lerro, a freshman from Royersford, Pa., picks up her second weekly award of the season after registering 11 points in three Lynchburg victories last week. Lerro began scoring explosion with the opening goal and an assist in a 4-0 non-conference victory at Stevenson. She then scored all three goals in the Hornets' 3-1 triumph over Virginia Wesleyan. Lerro again provided the winning scoring in LC's second ODAC win of the week, this time notching the second goal of the game in a 3-1 win at Shenandoah. For the season, Lerro is second in the ODAC with 38 points, just two behind teammate Nikki Simpao. Lerro leads the league with 18 goals scored.

MEN'S GOLF
Carter Morgan, Virginia Wesleyan, So.
Morgan, a sophomore from Tappahannock, Va., was the top ODAC finisher at the Ted Keller Memorial as he tied for fifth overall. Morgan fired rounds of 76 and 73 to finish at 9-over 149 on the par 70 layout set to 6,624 yards at Hanover Country Club. His efforts helped Virginia Wesleyan to third in the team standings at 603 (301-302), the best of five ODAC teams in action.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Liza Lewis, Randolph-Macon, Jr.
Lewis, a junior from Richmond, Va., enjoyed a strong tournament at the Revolutionary Collegiate Classic as she earned individual medalist honors following two rounds at Patriots Glen National Golf Club in Elkton, Md. Lewis won the even by six strokes over teammate Emmy Saathoff. She opened with a 6-over 78 before posting an 81 in round two, the best of the second round, to bring her final total to 15-over 159 on the par 72 layout set at 6,035 yards. Lewis helped Randolph-Macon to first in the team standings at 656 (321-335).

MEN'S SOCCER
Christian Torres, Randolph-Macon, So., Forward
Torres, a sophomore from Stafford, Va., put together a strong week in helping Randolph-Macon pick up a pair of league wins to move to 5-1 and into a tie for second place in the ODAC standings. Torres beat the keeper in a one-on-one scenario for his first goal of the week in a 4-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan. His second goal came at the most opportune time as he found the back of the net in overtime to secure a 2-1 victory for the Yellow Jackets over Eastern Mennonite. The two goals mark Torres' first of the season, giving him six total points when paired with two previous assists.

MEN'S SWIMMING
Tommy Thetford, Washington and Lee, Sr.
Thetford, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., was stellar in his first weekend for Washington and Lee as the Generals opened their new natatorium with a tri-meet victory over Mary Washington (193-69) and Centre (221-41) and a first place finish in the ODAC Relays. Thetford won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles vs. UMW and Centre with times of 0:21.11 and 0:47.11, respectively. He went on to play a role in the winning 200-yard medley (1:35.58) and 200-yard freestyle (1:25.82) relays. At the ODAC relays, Thetford helped W&L win four events --- 400-yard freestyle (3:14.02), 500-yard freestyle (4:14.84), 200-yard medley (1:37.43) and 200-yard freestyle (1:27.70) relays.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Emily Hageboeck, Washington and Lee, So.
Hageboeck, a sophomore from Charleston, W.Va., helped the Generals break-in their new natatorium with a tri-meet victory over Mary Washington (175-87) and Centre (202-60) and then a first place finish (489 points) in the ODAC Relays. Against UMW and Centre, Hageboeck won three individual events and joined a first-place relay squad. She won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes in 1:06.68 and 2:22.15, respectively. She then added a win in the 200-yard IM in 2:13.72. She capped her day by helping the 200-yard medley relay team post a time of 1:49.37. At the ODAC Relays, Hageboeck helped W&L win three events -- 3x50-yard breaststroke (1:36.11), 200-yard medley (1:51.21), and 3x100-yard IM (3:13.68) relays.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Isabella Krider, Bridgewater, Jr., Midfielder
Krider, a junior from Arlington, Va., came thru in the clutch for Bridgewater as the Eagles rattled off a pair of ODAC wins to move into a six-way tie on standings points (15) at the top of the conference table. Against Shenandoah, Krider opened the game's scoring with a 10th minute tally that stood up thru more than 55 minutes of action before SU leveled the game in the 66th minute. Just a bit more than four minutes later, Krider returned a full three points to Bridgewater as she again beat the keeper for her second tally and a 2-1 triumph. The Eagles went on to defeat Guilford, 2-0, later in the week. For the season, Krider has registered nine points on three goals and three assists. The two goals were her first since scoring in the first game of the season against Wooster (1-1 draw).

VOLLEYBALL
Miranda Hall, Randolph-Macon, So., Outside Hitter
Hall, a sophomore from Mechanicsville, Va., picks up her second weekly award after helping the Yellow Jackets take over sole possession of first place in the ODAC standings with their 3-2 victory at Washington and Lee. Hall led all players with 20 kills and 21.0 points earned in the five-set thriller that saw R-MC come back from 2-1 down after three sets. She hit .333 for the match with just four errors in 48 attacks. She added seven digs, two blocks and an ace to her stat line, which also featured a 4.2 points per set average. For the season, Hall leads the ODAC in kills per set (3.27) and points per set (3.5). She is sixth with 206 total kills and 10th with a .243 attack percentage.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Jamie Hiegel, Bridgewater, Jr.
Hiegel, a junior from Richmond, Va., picks up his second weekly honor after a strong showing at the Inter-Regional Rumble hosted by Oberlin College. Hiegel, who already owns the fastest eight-kilometer time (25:24.50) in the ODAC this season, posted the third-fastest time upon completing his race in Ohio. He placed 10th overall out of 265 finishing runners with a time of 25:40.0. That mark was 31-seconds off the pace set by event-winner Matt Svetz from Allegheny College. Hiegel's efforts helped Bridgewater to 15th over 31 teams with 404 points.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Marissa Coombs, Virginia Wesleyan, Sr.
Coombs, a senior from Newton, N.J., picks up her second weekly award of the season after placing 17th overall out of 239 finishing competitors at the Inter-Regional Border Battle hosted by Rowan University. Coombs, who already owns the ODAC's best six-kilometer time (21:55.3) of the season, stopped the watches at 22:22.9 as the third-best time in the league. Virginia Wesleyan placed 21st of 27 total competing teams.
