FOREST, Va. --- Just a few weeks are left in the spring season as teams and athletes gear up for the stretch run. Thru Week Prior to: April 9, 2018

BASEBALL - PITCHER Colin Morse, Shenandoah, Sr., Pitcher Morse, a senior from Vienna, Va., stymied Emory & Henry for eight innings in the nationally 22nd-ranked Hornets 19-2 conference victory. Morse surrendered just one hit and didn't allow a run in his time on the hill. He walked three Wasps and struck out seven. He retired 10 straight batters thru the middle of the contest before giving up a walk to start the seventh inning. For the season, Morse is now 4-2 with a 2.66 earned run average in 44.0 innings of work. He's third in the league with 43 strikeouts and has walked 19 batters. BASEBALL - PLAYER Luke Nussman, Shenandoah, Jr., First Base Nussman, a junior from Kingsport, Tenn., hit safely in five of six games and drove in at least one run in five games to help the nationally 22nd-ranked Hornets to a 6-0 week. Nussman went 12-for-26 (.462) overall with a double, triple, two homers, 10 runs scored, nine runs driven in, and a stolen base in the half-dozen victories. He doubled and homered with three RBI and three runs scored in a 19-2 win over E&H in game one of a sweep. He homered again in the second game, helping SU to an 18-3 victory. He had three hits including a triple with two RBI in a 17-3 non-conference win at York (Pa.). Capped his week with two hits and two RBI in an 11-0 non-conference win over Neumann. MEN'S GOLF Josh Irby, Lynchburg, Sr. Irby, a senior from Clover, Va., put together a strong week thru a pair of events for the Hornets. Irby opened by tying for fourth at the Lynchburg Invitational. He opened with a 3-over 75 on the par-72 track set to 7,009 yards at Poplar Grove Golf Club. He followed with a 2-over 74 to finish three shots off the pace at 5-over 149. His efforts helped Lynchburg to fourth in the team standings at 45-over 621 (305-316). Irby then participated in all four of Lynchburg's matches at the Division III Match Play Invitational. Irby went 3-1 for the event, including a triumph over top-rated (by Golfstat.com) James Mishoe from Guilford, 3&2, in the first round. After falling in the quarterfinal round to Hampden-Sydney's Parker Smith, Irby rebounded for a 1-up win over Chris Harris from Rhodes. He finished with a 3&2 win over David Dattilo from Mt. St. Joseph. Irby's efforts helped Lynchburg go 2-2 as a team in the largest recorded college match play event. The Hornets fell to Guilford (3-2-0) in the first round and Hampden-Sydney (4-1-0) in round two, but recovered for wins over Rhodes (3-2-0) and Mt. St. Joe's (5-0-0) in the final two rounds. WOMEN'S GOLF Maggie Kingora, Virginia Wesleyan, So. Kingora, a sophomore from Sterling, Va., picked up a pair of medalist honors at one day events hosted by Hollins University. Kingora posted a 16-over 88 to win by seven strokes at the Hollins Invitational on Friday at the Roanoke Country Club set to 5,801 yards and a par of 72. She came back two days later to win the Hollins Classic at Hunting Hills Country Club. She carred an 11-over 83 on the par 72 track set at 5,802 yards to win by 12 strokes. Teammate Hannah Turner finished second in both events. Kingora currently owns an 85.9 per round average thru 13.5 total rounds, which is 10th-best in the ODAC. MEN'S LACROSSE Ian Levin, Hampden-Sydney, Sr., Attackman Levin, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., helped lead the Tigers to a pair of ODAC victories including a nationally-ranked triumph. Levin opened with four goals and an assist to go with two ground balls and a caused turnover in a 20-11 win over Virginia Wesleyan. He followed that with four goals and two more helpers in a 10-9 triumph over nationally 16th-ranked Roanoke. He added a ground ball to his line. For the season, Levin is tied for the top spot in the ODAC with 54 points. He is second in assists (22) and third in goals scored (32). Click to learn more about the past week in ODAC MEN'S LACROSSE

MEN'S TENNIS Andreas Combos, Virginia Wesleyan, So., #2 Singles, #2 Doubles Combos, a sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., went 4-0 combined between doubles and singles action to help the Marlins to a pair of key ODAC victories to keep the top of the table within striking distance. Combos earned a 6-0, 6-0, win at #2 singles and joined Anthony Wilson for an 8-0 triumph at #2 doubles in a 5-0 victory over Randolph. He and Wilson found the going a little tougher against Lynchburg, but still pulled out an 8-6 win in doubles play. Combos followed with a 7-5, 6-4, triumph at #2 singles on the way to an 8-1 team victory. Combos is now 7-6 in singles play this spring, including 4-2 at #2 singles. MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE Quentin Webert, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr., Throws Webert, a freshman from St. Peter's, Mo., competed at two different meets over the weekend. At the Colonial Relays hosted by the College of William & Mary, Webert reset his own school record in the hammer throw. He tossed the apparatus 42.92 meters (140-10.00), which was tops among Division III competitors. It also ranks third on the ODAC seasonal chart. MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE Azavier Kirtley, Lynchburg, Fr., Sprints Kirtley, a freshman from Roanoke, Va., put together a strong day on the track in four events at the Colonial Relays hosted by the College of William & Mary. Kirtley took over top position in the ODAC 400-meter dash ranks by placing eighth overall at 48.74 seconds. That time is ranked 10th in NCAA Division III. He also moved into second on the conference's 200-meter dash chart at 21.82 seconds, which ranks 16th in the country. Kirtley added two relays to his day, helping Lynchburg to fifth in the 4x100-meter at 43.75 and sixth in the 1,600-meter sprint medley at 3:34.34. WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE Jennifer Calascione, Roanoke, Jr., Throws Calascione, a junior from Parker, Colo., threw in two events at the VertKlasse Meeting hosted by High Point University. Calascione finished seventh in the discus in 40.42 meters (132-7.00), which strengthens her hold on top position on the ODAC's season chart. It also ranks 30th in NCAA Division III. Calascione added a toss of 11.29 meters (37-0.50) in the shot put, which is second only in the ODAC to Virginia Wesleyan Michelle Yates (12.29) and her own previous season-best mark (11.90m). WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHELTE Quinn Harlan, Roanoke, Fr., Sprints Harlan, a freshman from Woonsocket, R.I., blistered the track while competing in three events at the VertKlasse Meeting hosted by High Point University. Harlan set a school-record in the 100-meter dash at 11.78 seconds. That time is tops in the ODAC and just 0.15 seconds off the conference record held by Amber Celen from Bridgewater. Harlan's time is ranked second in NCAA Division III, just 0.13 seconds off the top time from Tyra Abraham at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Harlan went on to top the ODAC in the 200-meter dash in a 10th-place time of 25.60 seconds. That ranks 22nd in the country. SOFTBALL - PITCHER Candace Whittemore, Randolph-Macon, Jr., Pitcher Whittemore, a junior from Montpelier, Va., twirled a pair of 3-0 shutouts against ODAC foes last week, helping the nationally seventh-ranked to a 6-0 week to move to 28-2 on the season. The Yellow Jackets have not won seven straight outings. Whittemore went the full seven frames in game one of a sweep at Eastern Mennonite. She gave up five hits and did not walk a batter while fanning five Royals. She turned the same trick in game one of a sweep of nationally 25th-ranked Emory & Henry. She surrendered just four hits and against did not allow a free pass. She struck out 12 Wasps, he second-highest output of the season and third 10-plus punchout game of the year. For the season, Whittemore is 12-2 with a 0.69 earned run average. She's fanned 108 batters and walked just 16 in 91.1 innings in the circle. SOFTBALL - PLAYER Kiersten Richardson, Virginia Wesleyan, Sr., Shortstop Richardson, a senior from Richmond, Va., exploded at the dish in the Marlins doubleheader sweep of Guilford, running top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan's record to 28-0 and extended their winning streak to 34 straight dating back to last season. Richardson went 5-for-7 in the series with two homers, five runs driven in, five runs scored, and four stolen bases. She was 3-for-4 in game one with a two-run homer, three runs scored, and three stolen bases to lead VWU to a 9-0 victory. She was 2-for-3 in the second outing, this time blasting a three-run shot to go with two runs scored and another stolen base. For the season, Richardson is hitting .393 and leads the ODAC in runs scored (37) and stolen bases (28). She is fifth with nine doubles. Click to learn more about the past week in ODAC SOFTBALL

WOMEN'S LACROSSE Jess Castelo, Washington and Lee, Sr., Attack Castelo, a senior from Red Bank, N.J., exploded for a career-high 11-point outing in the nationally 11th-ranked Generals 24-9 victory over Lynchburg. Castelo tied her collegiate-best with six goals to go with a new personal-high five assists. Leading by just one at 9-8 at the half, Washington and Lee out-scored Lynchburg 15-1 in the second half with Castelo contributing to five of those tallies with three goals and two assists. She added three ground balls and a caused turnover for the game. On the season, Castelo leads the Generals and is seventh in the ODAC with 39 points and 27 goals and 12 assists. WOMEN'S TENNIS Keyu Jin, Randolph, So., #1 Singles, #1 Doubles Jin, a sophomore from Kunming, China, put together a 4-0 week combined with doubles and singles play as Randolph posted a pair of key conference victories to stay in the top-half of the league table. Jin opened with an 8-4 victory at #1 doubles with Aubrey Hawn and followed with a 6-2, 6-2, victory at #1 singles in the WildCats 6-3 team triumph over Roanoke. She and Hawn appeared in the winner's column against Virginia Wesleyan with an 8-3 top flight win. Jin added a 6-1, 6-0, singles victory to help Randolph to a 5-0 team win. For the season, Jin is 10-5 in overall singles matches including 8-3 from the first position. She has won six of her last seven singles showdowns. She and Hawn are 6-4 in doubles play.
