ODAC Players of the Week - Week 33

FOREST, Va. --- Regular season play is in the books for outdoor track and golf with those championships slated for this coming weekend. That still left plenty of outstanding performances in those disciplines, as well as strong play from the remaining spring sports. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Amanda Kelley from Bridgewater women's golf, Kevin Duffy from Virginia Wesleyan men's golf, Hannah Jones from Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse, A.J. Witherell from Washington and Lee men's lacrosse, Connor Faint from Eastern Mennonite men's track, Amber Celen from BC women's track, Grant Amoateng from EMU men's track, Courtney Adams from BC women's track, Christina Harris from Lynchburg women's tennis, Mason Robb from Guilford men's tennis, Hanna Hull from Virginia Wesleyan softball, Nick Roth from R-MC baseball, Madison Glaubke from VWU softball, and Luke Nussman from Shenandoah baseball.

ODAC Players of the Week

BASEBALL - PITCHER
Nick Roth, Randolph-Macon, Jr., Pitcher
Roth, a junior from Henrico, Va., put together a strong effort over seven frames in a 7-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite. Roth surrendered just three baserunners as he gave up two hits and walked one while fanning eight. He gave up a two-out single in the first and then another single with one down in the sixth. He retired 13 straight batters before the second of EMU's two knocks. Roth and teammate Colin Selby are tied for second in the ODAC with seven wins as Roth improved to 7-0 on the season. He owns a 1.94 earned run average over 51.0 innings on the hill. He's struck out 46 and walked just two batters.

BASEBALL - PLAYER
Luke Nussman, Shenandoah, Jr., First Base
Nussman, a junior from Kingsport, Tenn., picks up his second weekly award after leading Shenandoah to a 4-0 week that including a trio of ODAC victories. Nussman posted a .706/.727/.824 slash line as he went 12-for-17 with two doubles, 10 runs driven in, eight runs scored, three walks, and a stolen base. He had at least two hits in each game with a pair of four-hit efforts. Nussman went 2-for-3 with two RBI in a 6-3 win over Bridgewater. He followed with a 4-for-5 day in a 13-5 non-conference win at Elizabethtown. He doubled, drove in three, and scored twice in that game. He went 2-for-5 with five runs scored, a double, two RBI, and three walks in the Hornets explosion for 26 runs in in game one at Hampden-Sydney. He was 4-for-6 in game two, driving in three runs while scoring one of his own and stealing a base in an 11-5 decision. Nussman saw his average jump 51 points to .371 following the week's performances. He is sixth in the ODAC with 31 RBI and seventh in both hits (43) and total bases (63).

MEN'S GOLF
Kevin Duffy, Virginia Wesleyan, Sr.
Duffy, a senior from Suwanee, Ga., put together a pair of top-four finishes this past week, including his first collegiate medal. Duffy won the Marlin Invitational at Sleep Hole Golf Course in Suffolk, Va. Duffy carded a 2-over 74 on day one before wrapping up with an even-par 72 for a 2-over 146. His efforts helped the Marlins to the team title at 28-over 604. Earlier in the week, Duffy tied for fourth overall at the Glenn Heath Memorial hosted by The Apprentice School. He finished just three shots backs of winner Doc Schulte from Shenandoah at 9-over par 153 following rounds of 76 and 77 and the par 72 track at the Williamsburg Club. His efforts, along with second-place finisher Carter Morgan, helped VWU to first in the team standings at 40-over 616 (315-301).

WOMEN'S GOLF
Amanda Kelley, Bridgewater, Jr.
Kelley, a junior from Newport News, Va., registered her first collegiate medal by winning the Marlins Invitational over the weekend. Kelley, who had been working on some personal swing changes, carded rounds of 83 and 81 at Sleep Hole Golf Course in Suffolk, Va., for a 20-over 164. She finished four strokes clear of Virginia Wesleyan's Maggie Kingora for the title.

MEN'S LACROSSE
A.J. Witherell, Washington and Lee, Jr., Attackman
Witherell, a junior from Wilmington, Del., was both effective and efficient in registering seven points in the nationally 13th-ranked Generals 18-5 victory at Bridgewater. Witherell scored six goals and dished out one assist towards Washington and Lee's scoring effort. He needed just seven shots to do it as he put six of his seven shots on goal. He also picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover. Witherell is currently tied for the ODAC lead with Ian Levin from Hampden-Sydney at 61 points. He has scored 38 goals and dished out 23 assists, both of which rank third in the league. Witherell now has 204 points for his career, making him just the seventh player in program history to top 200 career points. His 123 goals rank fifth all-time at W&L.

MEN'S TENNIS
Mason Robb, Guilford, Fr., #2 Singles, #2 Doubles
Robb, a freshman from Greensboro, N.C., helped Guilford move to 5-0 in ODAC play with a perfect 4-0 week in two conference wins for the Quakers. Robb and partner Elijah Gregory picked up an 8-4 win at #2 doubles to go with Robb's 6-2, 6-1, win at #2 singles in a 5-4 team victory over Hampden-Sydney. Robb and Gregory again won at #2 doubles against Emory & Henry, this time via an 8-2 decision. Robb backed it up with a 6-0, 6-0, win at #2 singles to help GC to a 9-0 team triumph. Robb is now 9-4 in overall singles action this season. That includes an 8-2 mark at #2 singles and a 5-0 showing against ODAC foes. He and Gregory at 9-3 when partnered together. They're 6-0 at #2 doubles and 5-0 against ODAC competition.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Grant Amoateng, Eastern Mennonite, Jr., Jumps/Sprints
Amoateng, a junior from Bristow, Va., continued his strong season in the jumps with four strong performances across two meets over the weekend. Amoateng opened at the Doc Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College. He won the triple jump at 13.96 meters (45-9.75), which ranks lower than only his personal season-best marks on the ODAC triple jump lists. He added a leap of 6.49 meters (21-3.50) to place second in the long jump. Then at the George Mason Spring Invitational, Amoateng exploded for a bounding leap of 14.71 meters (48-3.25) in the triple jump to place third overall in the large Divsion I dominated meet. That mark is sixth best in NCAA Division III, tops in the ODAC by more than three feet this season, and ranks as his new personal-best. He also improved his long jump from the previous day to 6.55 meters (21-6.00), placing third in the event. He season-high in that event is 6.79 meters (22-3.50).

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Connor Faint, Eastern Mennonite, Sr., Hurdles/Sprints
Faint, a senior from Winchester, Va., again has his blistering speed on display with a pair of ODAC top-five performances in the sprints and hurdles at two separate meets over the weekend. He opened with the 400-meter dash at the Doc Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater. He won the event at 49.72 seconds, just missing his own personal-record despite marking his fastest showing in the event this season. That time ranks fifth on the ODAC season chart. Faint then traveled a bit farther to the George Mason Spring Invitational to compete in his bread-and-butter event, the 400-meter hurdles. He stood atop the podium for the second time on the weekend with a time of 52.12 seconds. That is second only this season to his previous ODAC-best and nationally second-ranked mark of 51.89 seconds. In fact, is 52.12-second performance is still better than the time currently ranked third in NCAA Division III.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Courtney Adams, Bridgewater, Sr., Pole Vault/Jumps
Adams, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., competed four times at Bridgewater's Doc Jopson Invitational in a pair of field events and two track disciplines. Adams registered NCAA Division III top-30 marks in both the pole vault and triple jump, either taking over or strengthening her hold on the top spot in the ODAC in each. She won the pole vault at 3.53 meters (11-7.00), which ranks 24th in the country and tops the conference table by nearly a foot. She added a victory in the triple jump at 11.37 meters (37-3.75). That is #1 in the ODAC by nearly a half-meter and slots 27th in the Division III. On the track, Adams finished fourth in the 400-meter dash at 1:02.41, and helped the Eagles win the 4x100-meter relay in 49.38 seconds. That is the second-fastest 4x100 time in the ODAC this season.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Amber Celen, Bridgewater, Sr., Sprints/Jumps
Celen, a senior from Townsend, Del., took the track for the first time during the outdoor season at the Doc Jopson Invitational and promptly posted a pair of nationally top-10 ranked sprints. Celen won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.18 seconds, but it was her preliminary time of 12.09 seconds that moved her into sixth place in NCAA Division III and second on the ODAC table. Her name looks down upon the rest of the conference sprinters in the 200-meter dash after winning that event with a time of 24.95 seconds. That time slots ninth in the country. Celen also took a turn in the 4x100-meter relay, helping BC to first in the race and second in the ODAC at 49.38 seconds. She also competed in one field event, placing second overall at 5.40 meters (17-8.75) in the long jump. That is second-longest in the league and 44th in the country.

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Hanna Hull, Virginia Wesleyan, So., Pitcher
Hull, a sophomore from Chesterfield, Va., returns to the weekly awards circle following a 4-0 week on the rubber to improve to 24-0 on the season and help the nationally top-ranked Marlins to six victories on the week. Virginia Wesleyan is now 34-0 on the season and has 40 straight games dating back to last season. Hull won both ends of a doubleheader sweep of nationally fourth-ranked Christopher Newport to start her week. She gave up one run on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts over five innings in an 11-1 win in game one. She came back for two innings of relief to win 5-4 in game two. She was a bit wild in that contest, walking four and giving up two runs on a homer, but also fanned four batters. Hull picked up her third win of the week with a one-hit shutout at Randolph, 3-0. She didn't walk a batter and fanned nine in a full seven frames. She capped her week starting both ends of a sweep of Shenandoah. She went the first three frames and didn't allow a hit as the Marlins staff registered a no-hitter over three pitchers. Hull walked one and struck out six in her time. She got the win with four innings in a 12-0 result in game two. She surrendered four hits and walked one with four more punchouts. For the season, Hull owns a 0.63 earned run average to go with 24 wins over 132.1 innings in the circle. She has struck out 207 batters and walked 28. She has already struck out 579 batters in her career, leaving her just two short of tying the ODAC record held by former Marlin righty Brittaney Brown.

SOFTBALL - PLAYER
Madison Glaubke, Virginia Wesleyan, So., Outfielder
Glaubke, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Va., reached base safely 17 times in 24 plate appearances as the nationally top-ranked Marlins improved to 34-0 with six more victories. Virginia Wesleyan has now won 40 consecutive games dating back to last season. Glaubke hit .650 (13-for-20) with two doubles, a homer, 11 runs scored, three runs driven in, four walks, and four stolen bases in as many attempts. She had at least one hit in each game and five multi-hit efforts. Glaubke opened her week going 4-for-8 with a run scored, a RBI, and stolen base in sweep (11-1, 5-4) at #4 Christopher Newport. She was 6-for-7 with a double, homer, five runs scored, and a run driven in during a sweep (3-0, 12-0) at Randolph. Glaubke capped her week with a 3-for-5 showing with three walks, a double, RBI, five runs scored, and three stolen bases in a sweep (7-0, 12-0) at Shenandoah. For the season, Glaubke is third in the ODAC in hitting (.434) and on-base percentage (.537). She is second in runs (40), hits (43) and walks, and fourth in triples (2) and total bases (68).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Hannah Jones, Randolph-Macon, Jr., Midfielder
Jones, a junior from Chestertown, Md., put together both a high-volume and timely week of scoring in a pair of ODAC wins for the Yellow Jackets. Jones opened with three goals and two assists for five points in Randolph-Macon's 17-10 win at Bridgewater. She added nine draw controls and a caused turnover to her line. She upped the ante to seven goals with seven draw controls and a ground ball in a 15-14 victory at Shenandoah. It was her tally with 4:14 to play the proved the game-winner. R-MC is now in sole possession of second place in the ODAC at 4-1 with a 7-6 overall mark. Jones now has 37 points on an ODAC seventh-best 33 goals and four assists. She is also seventh in draw controls (48) and free-position goals (11-of-20).

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Christina Harris, Lynchburg, So., #1 Singles, #1 Doubles
Harris, a sophomore from Falls Church, Va., continues to roll thru the spring season with little more than a blip on her singles record as she went 4-0 between doubles and singles action in the Hornets 1-1 week. She and Sarah Wyly earned an 8-5 win at #1 doubles against Randolph. Harris followed with a 6-0, 6-2, victory at #1 singles to help Lynchburg to a 6-3 team triumph. In a 5-2 team setback to Roanoke, Harris was responsible for (or partly so) for both of the Hornets' points. She and Wyly won 8-5 for a second time at #1 doubles. Harris then picked up a 6-1, 6-1, triumph at #1 singles. She is now 12-0 in top-flight singles matches this spring.
