Washington and Lee Claims All Three ODAC Commissioners Cups

Washington and Lee Claims All Three ODAC Commissioners Cups

FOREST, Va. --- The final standings for the ODAC Commissioner's Cups presented by Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance have a familiar feel, not just in which schools top the table but in the manner in which they appear. Washington and Lee University filled its arms with all three cups for the fourth straight season, commanding relatively sizable margins in each race. Randolph-Macon College and the University of Lynchburg placed second and third, respectively, in each chart, setting records for points along the way.

Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance is the proud sponsor for the Dan Wooldridge Overall Champions Cup and the ODAC Men and Women's Commissioner's Cups. Virginia Farm Bureau and the ODAC continue their partnership in focusing on the strength of the conference's student-athletes and maintaining the NCAA Division III philosophy of the complete student-athlete experience. Aside from supporting the ODAC Commissioners' Cups, Virginia Farm Bureau is the sponsor of the ODAC's sport-by-sport scholar-athlete awards.

As determined by the ODAC Board of Directors, points for the ODAC Commissioner's Cups are based on regular-season standings in team sports and championship team finishes in individual/meet sports. Each institution has a total number of possible points it can collect based on its sport sponsorship. The total number of points earned is then divided by the total number of possible points to determine the rating for each institution.

Washington and Lee's dominance in cup history is easy to see. The Generals have earned 17 straight and 23 total Wooldridge Overall Champions Cups. Their total in the remaining two cups now stands at 19 each, having won the Women's Commissioner's Cup for 16 straight seasons and the Men's Commissioner's Cup for a fourth successive year.

The Generals' overall rating of 0.849 resulted from earning 216.5 of a possible 255.0 points throughout its conference sports sponsorship. That rating is a slight improvement (.002) over last season's mark. Washington and Lee earned its top billing by claiming first place points - or a share of them - in 13 sports.

Randolph-Macon and Lynchburg both set new records in Wooldridge Cup ratings for the second straight season. The Yellow Jackets, thanks to full points in five sports, eclipsed the 0.800 mark for the first time at 0.803 (156.5-of-195.0). Last year, R-MC posted a rating of 0.796. Lynchburg's 2017-18 rating of 0.745 lasted just one season as the program's benchmark. With full marks in four sports, the Hornets increased their Wooldridge Cup rating to 0.775 (176.0-of-227.0).

The order of Washington and Lee, Randolph-Macon, and Lynchburg as the top-three teams persisted throughout each cup, but that was also true for sports four thru six. Bridgewater College, Roanoke College, and Virginia Wesleyan University finished fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, in all three tables.

In the Women's Commissioner's Cup standings, Washington and Lee earned top marks in cross country, golf, lacrosse, swimming, and tennis and shared first prize with Randolph-Macon in volleyball. That haul earned W&L a 0.848 rating (112.0-of-132.0). In addition to volleyball, R-MC shared first place points in soccer with Lynchburg and Bridgewater on the way to a 0.817 rating (85.0-of-104.0). Lynchburg added first place marks in field hockey and both indoor and outdoor track & field to its share of soccer top points for a 0.811 rating (99.0-of-122.0).

Washington and Lee upped its ante by one in the Men's Commissioner's Cup standings, claiming first place points in seven sports. That list includes cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and indoor track. That led to a 0.850 rating (104.5-of-123.0). Randolph-Macon earned best marks in baseball, basketball, and football on the way to a 0.786 rating (71.5-of-91.0). Lynchburg chimed in second in three sports, leading to a 0.733 rating (77.0-of-105.0).
