ODAC Players of the Week - Week 4

FOREST, Va. --- Most ODAC teams entered the conference portions of their season schedules over the past week as league standings started to move around a little. Those earning ODAC weekly honorees include (pictured from top-left): Olyvia Longacre from Eastern Mennonite women's golf, Brian Peccie from Washington and Lee men's golf, Skyler Lattuca from Virginia Wesleyan men's cross country, Caitlin Mertens from Lynchburg women's soccer, Thomas White from Bridgewater men's soccer, Taylor Hayes from Shenandoah field hockey, Tyler Redmond from Emory & Henry football, Amber Matalus from VWU volleyball, Zack Clifford from Ferrum football, and Samantha Yates from W&L women's cross country.

FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tyler Redmond | Emory & Henry | So. | Defensive Back
Redmond, a sophomore from Arden, N.C., helped lead a Wasps' defensive unit that shutout the University of Rochester for three of the four quarters and held the Yellowjackets to 277 yards of offense in a 52-17 road win in Rochester. Redmond posted an ODAC weekly-high eight tackles with six solo stop and 1.0 tackles for loss. He broke up a pass in addition to providing the longest play of the day. At the outset of the of the second quarter, Redmond intercepted a Rochester pass in the end zone and returned it the full length of the field for a touchdown. The score put E&H ahead 21-0 on the way to a 38-0 halftime advantage. The interception was the first of the season for Redmond and third of the defensive back's career.

FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Zack Clifford | Ferrum | Jr. | Quarterback
Clifford, a junior from Salem, Va., is the first student-athlete from Ferrum to earn an ODAC weekly honor. Clifford was stellar behind center as he was 13-of-16 passing (81.3%) for 246 yards and a school-record four touchdowns. He and Nick Pearce connected a 60-yard touchdown pass, the longest play from scrimmage on the day. That was the only big play as Clifford and Johnny White combined on two passing scores including a 50-yard touchdown to open the game's scoring. Quentin Wallace caught the fourth TD throw from Clifford. On the ground, the Panthers quarterback carried the ball 14 times for 71 yards including a 1-yard touchdown midway thru the third quarter. For the season, Clifford has thrown for 533 yards and nine touchdowns against just one interception. He's also run for 162 yards and three touchdowns.

FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Taylor Hayes | Shenandoah | Jr. | Midfielder
Hayes, a junior from Fredricksburg, Va., helped Shenandoah continue its successful start to the season with a 2-1 week to move to 7-2 on the season. Hayes registered nine total points on three goals and three assists. She notched one goal and one assist in each contest as the Hornets sandwiched a 4-3 loss at Mary Washington in which their comeback bid came up short between a pair of 3-2 victories over St. Mary's (Md.) and Wesley. Hayes currently leads the ODAC in points (23) and assists (9) and is second in goals scored (7).

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Brian Peccie | Washington and Lee | Jr.
Peccie, a junior from Norfolk, Va., picked up right where he left off last season as the reigning NCAA Division III individual champion won the Division III Preview in his first outing of the season. Peccie, who doubled as the ODAC Men's Golfer of the Year in 2018, finished at 5-under 211 after three rounds at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky. He opened with a 2-over 74 on the par 72 track set at 7,190 yards. He reversed course in round two, carding a 5-under 67 before finishing with a 2-under 70 win by four strokes. He and runner-up Matt Organisak (-1, 215) from Emory University were the only two players under-par for the tournament. Peccie's efforts helped nationally fifth-ranked Washington and Lee to a tied for third in the team standings at 892 (314-286-292). The event featured 15 of the top 25 teams in the country.

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Olyvia Longacre | Eastern Mennonite | Jr.
Longacre, a junior from Telford, Pa., put together a strong performance at the Bridgewater Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg, Va. Longacre finished second overall with a new career-low round of 5-over 77 on the par 72 layout set at 5,804 yards. She was largely consistent throughout her round, posting 11 pars and two birdies. The runner-up finish ties her best career showing, while the 77 is one shot better than her previous best.

MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Thomas White | Bridgewater | Jr. | Forward
White, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., helped the Eagles opened ODAC play with a pair wins last week as he registered four goals. He scored twice in both contests, tallying the opening goal in each in addition to second mark in two 4-0 victories over Shenandoah and Emory & Henry. White currently leads the ODAC in points (18), is tied for first in goals scored (7), and is third in assists (4). The Eagles join Lynchburg atop the early ODAC standings at 2-0 with a 5-3 overall record.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Caitlin Mertens | Lynchburg | Sr. | Forward
Mertens, a senior from Succasunna, N.J., makes it three weekly awards in four tries as the Hornets' striker put together a 13-point week with six goals and one assist in a pair of Lynchburg victories. Mertens opened with three goals in a 5-0 home win over St. Mary's (Md.). She followed with her second straight hat trick to with an assist in a 6-0 win at Randolph College in Lynchburg's ODAC opener. Mertens is the first Lynchburg player to notch back-to-back hat tricks since Angela Bosco in 2014. Mertens currently leads the ODAC in points (24) and goals scored (11).

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Amber Matalus | Virginia Wesleyan | Jr. | Middle Hitter
Matalus, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., put together a big week at the net to help Virginia Wesleyan to a pair of victories including the program's first-ever triumph over local rival and nationally 20th-ranked Christopher Newport University. In that match, Matalus registered 16 kills against just one error for a .500 attack percentage. She added four digs and two total blocks, including a block-assist on the match-clinching point with Doneisha Hall to secure the 3-2 victory. Matalus was productive and efficient for a second time in a 3-1 win over Shenandoah to move the Marlins to 2-0 in ODAC play. Matalus collected 17 kills against three errors for a .452 attack percentage. She chipped in a block to give her 17-plus points responsible in both matches. Matalus is currently #2 in Division III and tops in the conference in attack percentage (.388). She is ninth at 3.3 points per set and has registered 101 kills.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Skyler Lattuca | Virginia Wesleyan | Fr.
Lattuca, a freshman from Middle Island, N.Y., picks up his second weekly honor after competing at the Hornet Harrier at Kernstown Battlefield in Kernstown, Va. The event also served as the ODAC Preview as Shenandoah will host the conference teams in a month's time in Kernstown for the league championship races. Lattuca competed in the eight-kilometer men's race and finished third overall and tops in the ODAC with a time of 26:38.4. Virginia Wesleyan finished second in the team standings with 48 points. The meet itself featured five different race distances combined for men's and women's competition.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Samantha Yates | Washington and Lee | Sr.
Yates, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., earns her second weekly award of the season after competing at the Hornet Harrier at Kernstown Battlefield in Kernstown, Va. The event also served as the ODAC Preview as Shenandoah will host the conference teams in a month's time in Kernstown for the league championship races. Yates competed in the women's five-kilometer event and bested the other 111 athletes with a winning time of 18:44.6. That time is not only a career-best for Yates, but also established a new course record. Her efforts helped Washington and Lee place first in the team standings with 43 points. The meet itself featured five different race distances combined for men's and women's competition.
