ODAC Players of the Week - Week 24

FOREST, Va. --- Several spring sports kicked into action this weekend with the winter campaign postseason quickly drawing near. That is especially true for swimming as programs took the week off of competition to train for the upcoming championships February 15-17. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, top-to-bottom left-to-right): Sarah Commons from Lynchburg softball, Tom Kellogg from Washington and Lee baseball, Taylor Belknap from LYN softball, Buzz Anthony from Randolph-Macon men's basketball, Miracle Walters from Guilford women's basketball, Jake O'Brien from Hampden-Sydney men's lacrosse, Darian Diaz from Shenandoah men's tennis, Endasia Mitchell from LYN women's track, Joe O'Connor from W&L men's track, Maddie Van Aken from LYN women's track, and Donovan Fiore from W&L men's track, and Chadwick Feeley from W&L baseball.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tom Kellogg | Washington and Lee | Jr. | Pitcher
Kellogg, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, opened the new season with a strong start in a 9-1 victory over Averett. The Generals swept three games from the Cougars over the weekend. Kellogg worked the first five frames in the third game of the series, giving up two hits without a run. He walked one and struck out four. He needed just 64 pitches to complete his first outing.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chadwick Feeley | Washington and Lee | Sr. | Shortstop
Feeley, a senior from Jacksonville, Fla., registered a trio of two-hit games and slashed .462.429.538 as Washington and Lee opened the season with a three-game sweep of Averett. Feeley went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a RBI, and a stolen base in an 11-2 win in game one. He followed with a 2-for-4 showing with a RBI in a 7-3 win in game two. Feeley smacked a double and drove in three runs in a second 2-of-4 performance in game three, a 9-1 Generals' win. Feeley now has the fourth-most at bats (491) in school history and is tied for sixth in hits (166) in W&L lore.

INDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Joe O'Connor | Washington and Lee | Fy. | Jumps/Hurdles
O'Connor, a first-year from Henrico, Va., competed three times at the Noke Elite Meet hosted by Roanoke College. O'Connor won the pole vault by clearing 4.56 meters (14-11.50), which gives him sole possession of the top spot in the ODAC. That mark ranks 31st in NCAA Division III and is 0.55 meters (1-5.75) clear of the next closest ODAC competitor. O'Connor added seventh place showing in the high jump at 1.76 meters (5-9.25). He also took a turn on the track, placing 2nd in the 60m hurdles at 0:08.80, which is just outside the ODAC's top-five.

INDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Maddie Van Aken | Lynchburg | Sr. | Pole Vault/Jumps
Van Aken, a senior from Blacksburg, Va., competed twice in the jumps at the VMI Winter Relays. Van Aken finished 16th in the triple jump at 10.44 meters (34-3.00), which is just outside the ODAC's top-five. Her specialty, however, is the pole vault and she certainly did not disappoint there. Van Aken improved her grasp on the top spot in the ODAC by clearing 3.65 meters (11-11.75), which is .25 meters (10-inches) higher than the next closest ODAC competitor. Van Aken now ranks 21st in NCAA Division III with her new program record and personal-best mark.

INDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Donovan Fiore | Washington and Lee | Jr. | Sprints
Fiore, a junior from Gilbert, Ariz., put together a pair of nationally top-50 ranked performances at the Noke Elite Meet hosted by Roanoke College. Fiore won the 400-meter dash with a time of 0:50.51 to take over the top spot in the ODAC. When converted for the national rankings, his time of 0:49.72 is slotted 47th in NCAA Division III. Fiore added a second place finish in the 200-meter dash at 22.52. That mark is second-fastest in the ODAC. It also converts to 22.13 to rank 32nd in the country. Fiore also ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay team, which stopped the watches at an ODAC-best 3:28.10.

INDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Endasia Mitchell | Lynchburg | Sr. | Sprints/Mid-Distance
Mitchell, a senior from Perry Hall, Md., put together a pair of ODAC top-times which also rank inside the top-five in Lynchburg history after a pair of runs at the VMI Winter Relays. Mitchell tightened her grip on the conference's best time in the 400-meter dash with a 0:59.58 to place 10th overall. That ranks 47th nationally. When converted for track size down to the ODAC's flat-track standard for qualification, Mitchell's time of 0:58.79 puts her more than two seconds faster than the next best league competitor. Mitchell moved to the top of the conference chart in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.10 to finish seventh. That mark converts to 2:21.72, which ranks her just 0.19 seconds faster than teammate Michela Cholak on the ODAC list.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Buzz Anthony | Randolph-Macon | So. | Guard
Anthony, a sophomore from Arnold, Md., led nationally fifth-ranked Randolph-Macon to a pair of ODAC wins last week as the Yellow Jackets mathematically locked up the top seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament. Anthony averaged 19.0 points and 14-of-23 shooting (.609) to go with 13 total assists over the two victories. He opened with 17 points and 10 assists for his third double-double of the season (all on points and assists) in a 91-53 triumph over Hampden-Sydney. He was 6-of-9 from the field including 2-of-5 from deep and nailed all three of his foul shots. He added two rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes on the floor. Anthony followed with 21 points on 8-of-14 from the field including 3-of-7 from downtown in an 87-45 win at Randolph. He made both his shots from the line, handed out three assists, and pulled down three rebounds to go with a steal. For the season, Anthony is 11th in the ODAC in scoring (15.9) and ninth in total points (382). He is first in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.2) and assists (139), fifth in steals (48), 3-point shooting (.461), and free throw shooting (.846), sixth in free throws made (77-91), seventh in field goal shooting (.545), and eighth in field goals made (132-242).

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jake O'Brien | Hampden-Sydney | So. | Attack
O'Brien, a sophomore from Scituate, Mass., helped the Tigers open the season with a 14-7 home victory over Mary Washington on Saturday. O'Brien put together a career game in all offensive statistical categories. He finished with six points and five goals and an assist. He scored his five goals on 10 total shots and six on goal. O'Brien also picked up three ground balls.

MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Darian Diaz | Shenandoah | Jr.
Diaz, a junior from Haymarket, Va., helped the Hornets open the 2019 spring season with a 5-3 triumph over Penn State-Altoona in the Winchester Country Club over the weekend. Diaz and doubles partner Bryan Harris claimed an 8-0 triumph from the top flight. Diaz was nearly as perfect by himself at #1 singles, picking up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jimmy Gillespie.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Taylor Belknap | Lynchburg | Sr. | Pitcher
Belknap, a senior from Arden, N.C., helped the Hornets start off the 2019 campaign in resounding fashion with a sweep at Methodist University. Belknap got the start and went 4.0 innings of a 5-inning shortened 11-0 shutout of the Monarchs in game one. Belknap gave up two his and walked two while fanning six batters. She settled in mid-way thru the contest, setting down five straight between the second and third innings.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sarah Commons | Jr. | 2B | Lynchburg
Commons, a junior from Glen Allen, Va., posted a .833/.875/1.000 slash line during a season-opening sweep on the road at Methodist. Commons was 5-for-6 at the dish with five runs scored, a double, two walks, and two stolen bases. She was 2-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases, and three runs scored in an 11-0 shortened win in game one. She followed with a 3-for-4 outing with two runs scored in a 9-1 triumph in game two.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Miracle Walters | Guilford | Jr. | Forward
Walters, a junior from Elkin, N.C., picks up her second weekly award of the season after leading Guilford to a pair of conference wins. The Quakers have now won seven straight games and 11 of their past 12 contest. Walters averaged 15.0 points and shot at a blistering .813 clip (13-of-16) over the two outings. She opened with 17 points on 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from the line in a 56-53 triumph at Randolph College. She added six rebounds, four assists, and three steals to her line. Walters followed up with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting in a 72-57 home victory over Bridgewater. She chipped in three boards to go with two assists and two steals. For the season, Walters is fifth in the ODAC in scoring (15.0) and fourth in overall points scored (3440. She is second in free throw shooting (.565), third in field goals made (140-of-248), seventh in foul shooting (.780) and 10th in free throws made (64-of-82). She is also #1 in minutes played (830) and minutes per game (36.1).
