ODAC Players of the Week - Week 32

FOREST, Va. --- Some outstanding performances dotted each ODAC sport over the past week. Postseason play looms large with each result, making those highlight outings that much more important. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, top-to-bottom left-to-right): Gerard DePhillips from Shenandoah baseball, Hanna Hull from Virginia Wesleyan softball, Ray Tricarico from Eastern Mennonite baseball, Anna Thomas from Emory & Henry softball, Laurie Jones from Washington and Lee women's golf, Keith Cooper from VWU men's golf, Kelsi Trevisan from Lynchburg women's lacrosse, Eric Husselbaugh from Bridgewater men's lacrosse, Joe Horne from Guilford men's tennis, Ashley Schmitz from Randolph women's tennis, Grant Amoateng from EMU men's track & field, Jennifer Calascione from Roanoke women's track & field, Tristan Lucy-Speidel from LYN men's track & field, and Emily Valle from BC women's track & field.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gerard DePhillips | Shenandoah | Jr. Closer
DePhillips, a junior from Florham Park, N.J., has turned himself into one of the top closers in NCAA Division III. He tacked on three more saves last week, tying him for the top spot in the country with eight. DePhillips was nearly perfect three save situations, helping SU to a 3-0 showing in those contests. He worked a perfect frame for his first save in an 11-9 win over York (Pa.). He fanned two Generals against a walk with a second scoreless and hitless frame for a save in an 8-6 victory at Washington and Lee. DePhillips recorded four outs in a perfect 1.1 innings for his final save of the week as he fanned three Hornets in a 3-2 win versus Lynchburg. For the season, DePhillips is 0-1 with eight saves in nine appearances. He as struck out 12 and owns a 2.77 ERA in 13.0 innings on the slab.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ray Tricarico | Eastern Mennonite | So. | Catcher
Tricarico, a sophomore from Culpeper, Va., put together a strong and timely week as he recently returned from injury to help lead the Royals to a 2-1 week. Tricarico slashed .615/.643/.846 in going 8-for-13 with a double, triple, two RBI, and five runs scored in addition to a walk and a stolen base. He was 4-for-5 with a double, triple, RBI, and four runs scored in a 13-10 win at local rival Bridgewater. After going 1-for-3 with a run scored in a 9-2 loss to Randolph-Macon in game one of their series, Tricarico went 3-for-5 with a walk in the nightcap. It was his walk-off single that game EMU a 5-4 victory over the nationally eighth-ranked Yellow Jackets. For the season, Tricarico is hitting .389 (21-for-54) with four doubles, a triple, a homer, 16 RBI, and 13 runs scored. He boasts a 1.032 OPS powered by a .476 OBP and a .556 SLG%.

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Keith Cooper | Virginia Wesleyan | Sr.
Cooper, a senior from Suffolk, Va., put together a career day at the Marine Corps Intercollegiate at Camp Lejeune as he won the Scarlet medal a trio of impressive rounds. Cooper opened his tournament on the Gold Course and posted a 2-over 75 on the par 73 track set at 7,100 yards. He then set a new Marlins record on the Scarlet course with a 7-under 63 on the par 72 layout marked at a much shorter 5,900 yards. Cooper again too the Scarlet course in round three and didn't disappoint as he registered a 3-under 67 for a new personal three-round best 8-under 205 to win the Scarlet individual medal. The Marlins made some noise as a team, placing third of 14 squads in the Scarlet competition. Their day-two 282 set a new program record.

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Laurie Jones | Washington and Lee | So.
Jones, a sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., picks up her first spring ODAC weekly honor and fourth overall on the year after tying for third overall out of 43 golfers at the Piedmont Spring Invitational hosted by Piedmont College at The Orchard Golf & Country Club in Clarkesville, Ga. Jones locked with three other players in third position at 15-over 159, which finished seven strokes off the pace by medalist Jillian Drinkard from Methodist University. Jones was consistent over her two rounds on the par 72 track set at 5,807 yards. She opened with an 8-over 80 before knocking one shot off her score in round two with a 7-over 79. Washington and Lee, ranked 16th in the latest Division III rankings by Golfstat, finished second of seven squads at 78-over 654 (326-328). Tenth-ranked Methodist won the event at 53-over 629.

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Eric Husselbaugh | Bridgewater | So. | Attackman
Husselbaugh, a sophomore from Annapolis, Md., put together a career week in leading Bridgewater to a pair of must-win games with the ODAC Tournament looming a few weeks away. Husselbaugh registered 19 points over two conference victories with 13 goals and five assists. He opened with seven goals and two helpers in a 15-14 triumph at Shenandoah. He added a ground ball and a caused turnover to his line. He again went for nine points in the Eagles 16-8 victory over Virginia Wesleyan. He scored six times and dished out a trio of assists to go with four ground balls and a caused turnover. For the season, Husselbaugh third in the ODAC in points (62) and second in goals scored (42). He recorded his 100th career point this past week in just short of two full seasons at BC.

MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Joe Horne | Guilford | Jr.
Horne, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., helped the Quakers pick up four ODAC team victories by going a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles play. Horne partnered with Jay Montague at #2 doubles in each. In a 5-4 team win over Randolph-Macon, the duo enjoyed an 8-1 doubles triumph. They won 8-6 to help GC to an 8-1 victory over Lynchburg. The pair were back at it in another nailbiter with their 8-3 doubles win contributing to a 5-4 team triumph over Bridgewater. Guilford topped Roanoke 9-0 in the final match of the week, picking a point from Horne and Montague after they won 8-3 in doubles play. In singles action at the third position, Horne recovered for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 win against R-MC. He picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lynchburg and followed with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory against BC. Horne capped his week with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Roanoke.

OUTDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Grant Amoateng | Eastern Mennonite | Sr. | Jumps
Amoateng, a senior from Bristow, Va., put together two strong performances in the jumps at the Legacy Invitational hosted by Eastern Mennonite. It is the first meet hosted by EMU since 2008. Amoateng strengthened his grip on the top spot in the ODAC in the triple jump as he won the event at 14.34 meters (47-4.25). That mark ranks eighth in NCAA Division III. Amoateng also won the long jump at 6.70 meters (21-11.75), a mark that is just outside the ODAC top-five.

OUTDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Jennifer Calascione | Roanoke | Sr. | Throws
Calascione, a senior from Parker, Colo., competed in a pair of throwing events and registered top ODAC marks in each at the Phoenix Invitational. Calascione improved her ODAC-leading discus mark to 41.62 meters (136-6.00). She now ranks 22nd in NCAA Division III in the event. In addition to placing eighth in the discus, Calascione chimed in ninth in the shot put. Her heave of 12.12 meters (39-9.25) is second in the ODAC only to her previous season-best distance of 12.20 meters (40-0.50) set three weeks ago at the VertKlasse Meeting hosted by High Point University.

OUTDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Tristan Lucy-Speidel | Lynchburg | Sr. | Mid-Distance/Hurdles
Lucy-Speidel, a senior from Fort Valley, Va., put together an impressive performance in two events at the Colonial Relays hosted by the College of William & Mary. Lucy-Speidel set a new program record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he finished second overall at 9:19.35. That time is tops in the ODAC and ranks 14th in NCAA Division III. Lucy-Speidel also participated in the distance medley relay. Lynchburg finished 11th overall at 10:26.21.

OUTDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Emily Valle | Bridgewater | Jr. | Hurdles/Sprints
Valle, a junior from Chesapeake, Va., is putting together an impressive all-around spring season with the ODAC championships less than two weeks away. Valle competed in a pair of events at the Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon University. She won the 400-meters hurdles with a time of 102.18. Not only is that the top time in the ODAC, but it stands #1 in NCAA Division III. Valle also ran a leg of the Eagles 4x400-meter relay, which finished fifth at 4:05.84. That time is second in the ODAC. In addition to the 400-meter hurdles, Valle currently leads the ODAC in the 100-meter dash (12.50), 100-meter hurdles (14.80), and long jump (5.61m | 18-5.00).

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hanna Hull | Virginia Wesleyan | Jr. | Pitcher
Hull, a junior from Chesterfield, Va., continued her torrid run against Marlins' opponents as the two-time national player of the year earns her fourth straight and fifth overall conference weekly award of the season. Hull went 2-0 with a save in four appearances for nationally second-ranked Virginia Wesleyan last week, surrendering just two hits and zero runs with 10 walks and 38 strikeouts in 18.0 innings in the circle. The southpaw opened her week with a complete-game no-hitter of N.C. Wesleyan, 3-0. She walked four batters, but made up for it with 17 strikeouts, her second-highest total of the season (18 vs. Fredonia on 3/2/19). She entered game two in relief with the game in the balance. She went 3.0 hitless and scoreless frames with three walks and seven punchouts to earn a save. Hull earned her second complete-game victory of the week with a 2-0 shutout at eighth-ranked Lynchburg. She gave up two hits and walked to batters while fanning 12. It was her 11th double-digit strikeout game of the season. Hull finished her week with with a scoreless inning of relief in game two, walking one and striking out a pair to close out a 7-2 victory. For the season, Hull is 18-1 with three saves, 11 complete games, and seven shutouts in 23 appearances including 16 starts. She has given up only 38 hits and eight runs (4 earned) in 105.2 innings of work. She has issued 36 free passes and struck out a NCAA Division III leading 208 batters. She owns a 0.26 ERA and opponents are hitting just .108 against her.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Anna Thomas | Emory & Henry | Fy. | Outfielder
Thomas, a first-year from Climax, N.C., put together a strong week that featured a trio of multi-hit games and a slash line of .526/.571/.789 in the Wasps 5-1 week. Thomas went 5-for-7 with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored in Emory & Henry's split (4-5, 10-2) with Ferrum. She helped E&H to a road sweep at Randolph (3-0, 6-0) with a double and a walk in game two, scoring a run. Thomas capped her week by generating eight runs in a sweep at Guilfird (10-0, 8-4). She doubled, drove in two runs, and scored twice in game one, and then went 3-for-4 with another two-bagger, two more RBI, and two runs scored in game two. She also stole a base in the latter contest. For the season, Thomas is third in the ODAC in hitting at .432 (32-for-74). She leagues the lead with 13 doubles and is seventh with a .662 slugging percentage. She has driven in 17 runs and scored 24 times.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kelsi Trevisan | Lynchburg | Jr. | Attack
Trevisan, a junior from West Chester, Pa., continued her stellar campaign by helping the Hornets to a pair of key wins as the close to the season draws near. Trevisan, who has registered at least one point in every game played this season, opened with three goals in an 11-10 come-from-behind victory versus Roanoke. Each of her tallies came in a 6-2 Lynchburg run to close the game and recover from an 8-5 second-half deficit. Trevisan increased her streak of scoring at least a hat trick to four straight games as she beat the keeper four times and dished out three assists in a 21-4 victory over Ferrum. She added a ground ball and two caused turnovers to her line. For the season, Trevisan is fifth in the ODAC in points (41) and seventh in goals scored (31).

WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ashley Schmitz | Randolph | Jr.
Schmitz, a junior from Keswick, Va., helped the WildCats go 2-0 win ODAC play with a pair of 5-4 wins over Roanoke and Virginia Wesleyan. That extended Randolph's winning streak to eight straight matches. Schmitz was a perfect 4-0 combined in singles and doubles play. She posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at #2 singles against Roanoke. She joined Keyu Jin for an 8-5 victory at #1 doubles versus the Maroons. Against VWU, Schmitz won 7-5, 6-1 at #2 singles and against paired with Jin for an 8-4 triumph at #1 doubles. Schmitz is now 11-2 in singles play at the second ladder position and is 7-1 with Jin in doubles matches.
