Washington and Lee ends Blue Jays' win streak in overtime

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — It took less than a minute for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team to get on the scoreboard Sunday afternoon in its non-conference matchup with visiting Washington and Lee. The Generals tied it up in the second half and won with a golden goal in the first overtime to escape Ira R. Herr field with a 2-1 win, ending the Jays' three-game win streak.

Lauren Berry ran into the box with the ball and squared a pass across into the middle where Kaceyanne Cerankowski buried her shot into the lower right corner of the net 52 seconds after the opening to whistle to put Elizabethtown (3-3-1) ahead 1-0 on the Blue and Gray's first shot of the game.

Washington and Lee (5-1) controlled much of the possession and made it tough for E-town in its offensive third. The Blue Jays were held to just two first-half shots while the Generals had six.

W&L turned up the pressure in the second half and were eventually rewarded with a penalty kick in the 69th minute. Hollis Tardy's penalty attempt was stopped by keeper Dana Robidoux, but the rebound came right back to Tardy, who collected the ball and put it back into the open net to tie the game at 1-1.

After neither team could break the deadlock in regulation, the first-ever meeting needed overtime to decide it. With less than three minutes to go in the first OT, Caroline Peters' header was initially stopped, but the rebound fell right back to her and she finished off the play with the game-winner.

The Blue Jays' three-game home stand continues with another non-conference game when nationally-ranked Misericordia visits Ira R. Herr Field on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m.
