The Muhlenberg baseball team faced tough competition and was outhit in both games of its doubleheader against 16th-ranked Roanoke.
The Mules (3-2) fell in the first game, 13-3, before dropping the second game by a score of 12-4. The Maroons (6-3) finished last season as one of the final four teams in the 2017 NCAA Division III College World Series. Both games were played on the campus of Virginia Tech.
For Muhlenberg in the first game, sophomores
Sam Arnold and
John Serruto each hit RBI singles in the fourth inning after Roanoke tallied four runs the previous inning. The Maroons tacked on five more runs in the seventh before junior
Michael Struck roped a double to left, scoring junior
Stephen Koester. Roanoke would add four more runs in the eighth to make the final score.
Junior
Kenny Freid gave Muhlenberg early offense in the second game with a double down the right field line, plating Struck and providing a 1-0 first-inning advantage. Roanoke tied the game two innings later, however, before taking the lead for good in the fourth inning.
Senior
Taylor Vazquez added a two-run single in the sixth as part of his three-hit day. Freid

Chris Grillo each had two hits in the second game, while Struck and Arnold had hits in both games.
Freshman
Jack Dollinger made his collegiate debut for Muhlenberg, getting the final out of the eighth in the first game and pitching a scoreless eighth inning in the nightcap. Freshman
Paul Poppert also made his debut and recorded his first strikeout.
