MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg College softball team split a pair of one-run decisions on its second day at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic, beating Rutgers-Camden 2-1 before falling to Emory & Henry 3-2.
Gettysburg (2-6) scored the first run of the game with Rutgers-Camden (4-2) as senior
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh) smacked a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded in the first inning. The Raptors answered in the home half with an RBI double by Gabrielle Castellini.
Sophomore
McKenzie Somers (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) and senior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) held the Raptors at bay for the remainder of the game. Somers allowed only two more hits while striking out three in the first four frames before giving way to Reilly in the top of the fifth. The senior surrendered a pair of hits and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning.
The Bullets converted the winning run in the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) stroked a one-out single and after a groundout, senior
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) came through in the clutch with a double to center field to bring home Cowell.
Reilly earned the victory with three strikeouts over the final three innings. It was her 48th career victory, moving her into a tie for second in program history.
Freshman
Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) went 2-for-3.
Emory & Henry (13-2) did all of its damage in the opening inning of the second affair. The Wasps connected on three consecutive hits for the first two runs with the third coming home on an error.
Gettysburg cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the fourth. Sophomore
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led off with a double and later scored on a single by junior
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington). Folfas scored Taylor with a single to left to pull the Bullets to 3-2 on the scoreboard.
Tiffany Cole silenced the Gettysburg bats over the final three frames, allowing just one more hit in the seventh inning.
Somers pitched well against the Wasps' potent lineup, striking out four and allowing just one walk over the final five innings.
Gettysburg closes competition at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic with two games on Thursday. The Bullets face Lycoming College and the College of St. Scholastica at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
