FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist football team came through with a late field goal in the final minutes to come from behind 20-19 over Guilford College Saturday afternoon.

Both teams entered the second week of the season looking for their first win. After a scoreless first quarter, Guilford opened the second quarter on the Methodist 18-yard line. The Monarchs pushed the Quakers back and eventually forced Guilford's Brad Scott to kick a 29-yard field goal to take the 3-0 lead. The Monarchs took over on their own 46-yard line after a 35-yard kickoff return from freshman Grady Hart. Methodist tailbacks Reggie Scales and Corey McGuire helped move the Monarchs into Quaker territory before sophomore Tyler Mosko kicked a 30-yard field goal to tie the game at three.

Guilford recovered a Methodist fumble on the Monarchs' seven-yard line and pushed it through for a touchdown with 3:57 to go in the half, but Methodist freshman Quinton Tate blocked the extra point. The Quakers held onto the 9-3 lead at halftime.

The Monarchs kicked off the second half, but after a Guilford penalty and a big sack from Methodist freshman Donovan Artis, the Quakers were forced to punt. On the first play of the drive, Scales broke through with a 57-yard touchdown run. Mosko's extra point was good for Methodist to take the 10-9 lead.

The Quakers responded with a 40-yard field goal and after Methodist quarterback Erik Teague was intercepted, Guilford scored a touchdown to take the 19-10 advantage. On the Monarchs' first possession of the fourth quarter Teague's pass went incomplete on first down, but Scales found open space once again for the 77-yard touchdown run. Mosko's extra point moved the Monarchs within one point with 13:56 to go in the game.

Both teams exchanged possessions before the Monarchs took over on their own 22-yard line with 3:31 to go. Teague picked up a first down after a pass to junior Brian Hopkins and a two-yard run of his own. Teague connected with sophomore Nathan Kindley who avoided a tackle and advanced to the Guilford 23-yard line. The Monarchs pushed the ball further into Quaker territory before calling a timeout with 42 seconds to go. Mosko came back out to kick an 18-yard field goal and give Methodist the 20-19 lead.

Guilford took over on their own 24-yard line with 28 seconds remaining but quarterback Billy Watkins connected on three straight passes to move the Quakers into Methodist territory. A Methodist penalty put them in field goal range and Scott had a 39-yard attempt with five seconds to go, but the kick went wide right as the clock expired to give the Monarchs the win.

Methodist finished with 193 yards rushing backed by Scales' 184 yards. Teague was 9-for-17 with one interception for 133 yards passing.

Sophomore Jody Balaam had six tackles for the Monarchs while junior Josh Cook, sophomore Devoe Mewborn and senior Eric Blalock had 4.5 a piece.

Guilford's Justin Parker ran for 98 yards while Watkins picked up 103 yards on 14-for-18 passing.

The Monarchs will have off next Saturday before hosting Emory & Henry Sept. 26 at 1 pm.
