GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Randolph-Macon College had four players score in double-figures as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Bullets 88-67 in the championship game of the 28th annual Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon in Bream Gymnasium.
Tournament MVP Buzz Anthony posted 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists for the Yellow Jackets. Anthony finished the weekend with 32 points, hitting 11-of-16 from the field, 10 assists, 10 rebounds, and two steals.
Montese Adams added 16 points for Randolph-Macon while Ian Robertson and Corey Bays chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively, who shot 49.3 percent from the field. Bays tallied a team-high seven rebounds, as the team outrebounded the Bullets 41-32.
Sophomore
Avery Close (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) led Gettysburg (1-4) with 22 points and eight rebounds, shooting 7-for-7 at the free throw line, and was named to the all-tournament team along with junior
Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), who grabbed seven rebounds and added eight points, Samuel Majekodunmi of Albright College, Riley Thompson of Ithaca College, and Corey Bays of Randolph-Macon.
Ithaca defeated Albright 80-78 in the consolation game behind 26 points from Riley Thompson. Samuel Majekodunmi collected 21 points for Albright.
Junior
Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) netted a season-high 13 points while junior
Nick Lord (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) contributed 11 points.
The Yellow Jackets (4-0) hit back-to-back baskets to open the first half, but the Bullets used a 12-0 surge thereafter to make it 12-4 at the 13:22 marker.
After going on a 9-2 run, Randolph-Macon tied the game at 15 a piece off a layup from Buzz Anthony. The Bullets retook the lead on the next possession from Duffey's layup, making it 17-15 with under 8:22 left in the stanza.
From that point until the end of the half, the Yellow Jackets outscored the Bullets 23-14, which included hitting three 3-pointers, to take the 39-31 advantage at intermission.
Randolph-Macon started the second half with a basket less than 12 seconds into the stanza and continued by going on a 14-3 run. The offense controlled the game the rest of the way as the Yellow Jackets were firing shoots from all cylinders, leading by 28 points with 6:25 left. RMC tacked on six more points from the 1:33 to the 32-second marker, while Close tallied the final points by knocking down a pair of free throws for the Orange and Blue.
Gettysburg is 0-5 against Randolph-Macon in the all-time series that dates back to the 1989-90 season.
Gettysburg plays it Centennial Conference opener on Tuesday when it hosts Franklin & Marshall College at 7 p.m.
