Box Score Maryville, TN - The Piedmont College women's soccer team recovered from its season-opening loss to Hanover with a big win earlier this afternoon shutting out Emory & Henry 5-0 in the Maryville College Invitational. Piedmont scored two in the first half and added three more in the 2nd to roll to the victory as senior
Shayna Rogers set the tone with a career day tabbing three assists and scoring the fourth goal of the game.
Piedmont scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of the match to take control early with
Savannah Castles opening the book as she cut back to her left foot burying an opportunity in the box to put her team up 1-0. Just a few minutes later,
Kalyn Dumanowsky would double the margin with a tidy combination from
Shayna Rogers who tallied assists on the first three Piedmont goals.
After Dumanowsky's finish on a breakaway chance, the Lady Lions held a 2-goal lead at the intermission but quickly made it three when senior defender
Kelsey Schaffernoth headed away a
Shayna Rogers corner kick just a few minutes into the second half. Rogers would later bend in a corner kick to the far post for a goal of her own as the score made the tally 4-nil and completed an impressive performance from the senior midfielder.
For good measure, Dumanowsky added to her stat sheet with a second goal scoring Piedmont's 5th goal in the final 20 minutes as the Lady Lions dominated in the run of play and on the scoreboard. Getting the shared shutout in goal was junior
Michaela Gardner and freshman
Ashlie Gonzalez as neither allowed the Wasps to find the back of the net. Gardner kept the net clean for the first 75 minutes before Gonzalez finished out with a scoreless 15 minute stand.
The rebound should be no surprise to followers of Coach Andrew's time at PC as he now owns a 24-4-1 record following a loss in his seven seasons as the leader of the Lady Lions. Only one time in his previous six seasons has Andrew seen his Lady Lions drop more than one contest in a row, a three-game losing skid in his first season back in 2008.
The win puts Piedmont at an even 1-1 on the season picking up a win and a loss at the Maryville College Invitational this weekend. PC will play in another tournament next weekend, the Meredith Classic hosted by fellow USA South member Meredith College. The Lady Lions open the event on Saturday, September 6th with with a 2:15 pm start against Guilford College out of the ODAC.
