GREENSBORO, North Carolina - In the second game of the season-opening series for the Piedmont College baseball team the Lions fell in extra innings to the homestanding Guilford Quakers by the score of 5-4. Guilford used a two-run seventh inning to tie the score at four runs apiece and added the game-winner in the bottom of the tenth for the walk-off victory.
The Lions jumped out to an early advantage as
COLTON BRYANT doubled to lead off the game and eventually scored on a
JOSH BAILEY sacrifice fly. Piedmont added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth as Bryant, Bailey and
KEVIN D'ANTIGNAC posted RBI's giving the Lions the 4-2 lead.
The Quakers would respond in the home half of the seventh with a pair of unearned runs capitilizing on a pair of Piedmont errors. The score would remain tied until the bottom of the tenth inning when the home team manufactured the walk-off run completing the comeback.
Junior
MATT LISK went seven strong innings allowing two earned runs scattering six hits while striking out three. Freshman
ALLEN TOKARZ took the hard-luck loss going two and two-thirds innings allowing no earned runs on only one hit.
Bryant and Bailey paced the offense going 2-3 respectively while
KEITH GRABOWSKI went 1-3 with a pair of runs scored and three stolen bases. John Macon Smith and Jordan Slate led Guilford combining for four hits in six at-bats.
The loss drops Piedmont to 1-1 on the season as the Lions will travel to Greensboro College this Friday, February 8 in the USA-South opening three-game series with first-pitch scheduled for 3:00.
