Virginia Wesleyan scored a pair of goals late in the first half and went on to defeat top-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action on Saturday in Virginia Beach, Va.

Scoring chances were difficult to come by for much of the first half, with junior forward Taylor Rieger (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) and sophomore midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) taking the only shots during the first 35 minutes of action.

The Marlins' first shot came at the 35:14 mark when Austin VonVille sent a ball over the goal, but VonVille would have more success on his next try, fielding a pass from Isaac Arington and scoring from 5 yards out to give the hosts a 1-0 lead with 6:41 left in the first half.

Four minutes later, Virginia Wesleyan added to its lead when Chris Luce connected from 10 yards out.

Held to those 2 shots during the first half, the Bishops turned up the offensive pressure during the second half, peppering the Marlin goal with shots only to see VWC keeper Jake Burtch stop shots from Rieger, freshman midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.), and junior midfielder Ian O'Keefe (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne).

The Marlins added some insurance in the 65th minute when Arington scored from 10 yards out.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 10-8.  Senior Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) started in goal for the Bishops, with sophomore Colin Beemiller (Pickerington/North) finishing the game and making 1 save.  Burtch finished with 4 saves in the Marlin goal.
