Senior forward Kyle Baum (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) scored to give eighth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, but Washington & Lee came back with 3 goals during the second half to record a win in the first round of the annual adidas® Invitational on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

Saturday's first game saw Max Rochester score twice and set up another goal as Wooster also tallied 3 second-half scores to record a win.

In Sunday's second round, Ohio Wesleyan will host Olivet at 4 p.m. at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex, to be preceded by Washington & Lee against Wooster at 11 a.m.

Baum put the Bishops on the scoreboard in the third minute, fielding a through ball from senior midfielder Neil Wilson (Batavia) and finding the back of the W&L goal.

Baum would put 2 more shots on goal, and Wilson would add another during the next 12 minutes of play, but General goalkeeper Gillen Beck was there for the save each time.

Senior midfielder Phoenix Neitzelt (Delaware/Hayes) had a couple of chances early in the second half, taking a centering pass from Baum but sending a one-time shot over the crossbar in the 53rd minute, then taking a shot from point-blank range that Beck blocked in the 58th minute.

The Generals put a chance together in the 65th minute when Geinda Smith sent the ball ahead to Kevin Lencioni, but senior goalkeeper Ben Farynowski (Grandview Heights) diverted the ball over the crossbar.

On the ensuing corner kick, Dylan Rich sent the ball to the goal mouth, where Dylan Stroud was able to head it home to even the score at 1-1 with exactly 25 minutes left in regulation time.

Washington & Lee took the lead on a similar play in the 73rd minute, this time with Sam Knapke taking the corner kick and David Cohen directing the ball into the net.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the waning minutes, with a shot by Neitzelt heading wide right.

The Generals added some insurance when Oliver Dolberg made a run along the right end line and buried a shot with 5:48 left in regulation time.

"This is a good lesson for us," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "We had many chances to put this game away and didn't take advantage of them.  We had some point-blank shots, and to give up two corner-kick goals like that -- that just doesn't happen here.  We played well enough to win, and (Washington & Lee) is a very good team.  I'm disappointed with the upperclassmen -- (Kyle) Baum is playing like an All-American, but he's the only one who is."

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Washington & Lee, 15-14.  Farynowski finished with 2 saves, while Beck was credited with 6 saves.

In the opener, Wooster broke a scoreless deadlock when Rochester played the ball ahead to Aleksi Pelkonen, whose shot from the middle found the back of the net in the 65th minute.

Rochester would take over from there, converting a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, then adding a goal off a feed from Alex Montalbano just over a minute later.

Will Collis had the only save of the game for Wooster, while Comet keeper Nathan Weeks, who had made some fine plays in the first half to preserve the scoreless tie, finished with 8 saves.
