Chaplin Erupts for Seven Goals as CNU Women’s Lacrosse Takes Down Roanoke, 14-11, in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, P.R. -- Kylie Chaplin exploded for a career-high seven goals and assisted on another strike as the junior standout helped lead the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team to a 14-11 victory over Roanoke during a non-conference battle on Tuesday afternoon at Bayamon Stadium.

Kicking off the Puerto Rico trip in style, Chaplin pieced together her first career eight-point effort. Her seven goals also rank fourth on the program's all-time single-game list.

While Chaplin headlined CNU's efforts, the Captains received big contributions from several other players. Colleen Bourgal added her second collegiate hat-trick after scoring three times against the Maroons, while fellow freshman Catie Chess also chipped in with a pair of goals.

On the defensive end, Kirsten Mendelsohn frustrated Roanoke all day with a team-high five caused turnovers. That total ranks sixth on the program's all-time single-game list. Kedron Walsh also forced a pair of miscues during the game, while Hanna Slough came through with eight saves to earn the victory.

With the win, Christopher Newport evens its record at 2-2 on the year. Roanoke now sits at 0-1.

Although the Maroons scored two of the game's first three goals during the first 10 minutes of action, the Captains never wavered. Just 20 seconds after Roanoke grabbed a 2-1 advantage, Chaplin responded with her first goal of the contest. Shortly thereafter, Chess tacked on her second strike with a dart from the doorstep to give Christopher Newport its first lead of the game at 3-2.

Looking for a little breathing room, Chaplin found her groove. The third-year standout slung back-to-back goals, including one off a beautiful feed by Meaghan Galvin, to snatch a 5-2 edge. One minute later, Bourgal got into the act with an impressive display. The freshman broke down the RC defense as she spun one defender and ran past another on the way to her first goal of the contest.

Following a frantic start to the game, the CNU defense settled in with a solid stretch in the middle of the first half. Although Roanoke was able pull back within three at 6-3, the Captains clamped down. Slough made a pair of stops off free-position attempts and also caused a turnover. Mendelsohn forced two RC errors as well, while Sam Puglisi and Katie Gaskin each caused one to keep the Maroons off the scoreboard during a spotless 15-minute stretch.

Although Roanoke managed to break the silence with a goal right before halftime, the CNU attack regained its footing in the second half. Caitlin King got things rolling quickly with her first collegiate goal less than 30 seconds into the new stanza. Three minutes later, Caitlin Osbourne forced a turnover and Carly Wilson helped jumpstart a fast-break opportunity after securing the ground ball on the near sideline. With room to work, Chaplin hit Bourgal with a picture-perfect pass that the freshman buried for an 8-4 advantage.

After a minor response by the Maroons cut CNU's lead back down to three, the Captains answered. Once again, Bourgal was at the center of the action as she split a pair of defenders and secured a feed from Lindsay Weaver. Still running in-stride, she drove home her third goal to complete her hat-trick at 22:18 in the second half.

Holding a 9-5 lead, Chaplin put the game away with a spectacular run over the next seven minutes. During the surge, she converted a pair of free-position attempts and tacked on a third goal with a quick hitter off a long feed from Galvin to secure a 12-5 advantage with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.

Although Roanoke attempted a comeback bid and managed to score the next four goals, Christopher Newport continued to keep the Maroons at bay. Eventually, Erin Callahan helped put the game out-of-reach by setting up the squad's final two goals. During a 30-second run at the tail end of the period, the sophomore assisted on Galvin's first goal of the game before Chaplin took a pass and went barreling through the RC defense for her final strike to seal the victory.

Overall, seven Captains recorded at least one point in the contest, while five scored a goal. CNU also held a 16-11 advantage in draw controls, including six by Galvin. Roanoke led the way in ground balls, 35-28, but trailed in shots, 31-26.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Thursday at 10 a.m. ET for a battle with No. 17 St. John Fisher.
