Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Kiera Loftus (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) made a career-high 10 saves, but the Gettysburg College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to eighth-ranked and undefeated Lynchburg College Wednesday evening at Clark Field.

The Bullets (4-2) saw their four-match winning streak come to an end while the Hornets (5-0-1) captured their fifth-straight victory.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's soccer.

Loftus registered the most saves by a Gettysburg goalie since Allie Rivera '12 stopped 12 shots in a 2-0 loss at The College of New Jersey on Oct. 5, 2011.

Lynchburg, the 2014 NCAA Division III champion, outshot the Bullets 11-0 in the opening half. Loftus made three of her saves in the stanza, including a diving stop on a well-struck ball in the 20th minute. However, the Hornets broke through nine minutes later, when Kelley Smith kicked a loose ball inside the right post.

The visitors continued to apply heavy pressure in the second half, when they held a 12-1 shot advantage. But that's when Loftus racked up seven of her saves, including back-to-back stops on the ground in the 55th minute. She also made a leaping, fingertip deflection in the 75th minute, and later in the half came out of the cage to make an outstanding sliding stop on a Lynchburg breakaway.

The momentum began to shift late in the half, when the Bullets gained possession for several long stretches. However, the Hornets added an insurance goal in the 88th minute, when Caitlin Mertens ripped a shot from the top box inside the left post to set the final score.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, when it hosts Washington College at 4 p.m. back at Clark Field.
