CC drops 9-6 decision to Hampden-Sydney

Colorado College saw its 19-game regular-season winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 9-6 loss against Hampden-Sydney College in a neutral-site contest at SMU's Gerald R. Ford Stadium.

In a game that was a statistical draw, the difference proved to be the play of H-SC goalie Cody Hornung and the inability of CC's man-up unit to take advantage of its seven opportunities.

“It was a missed opportunity today,” head coach Sean Woods said. “We made too many unforced turnovers while we were a man up. When you have seven opportunities, you should score at least three times.”

Colorado College finished with a 37-26 advantage in total shots, but the difference in shots on goal was just 19-17. And when CC's shots were at the cage, Hornung proved tough to beat and finished with 13 saves.

“I thought we took good shots,” Woods said, “They just were not well placed against a hot goalie.”

Senior attackman Micah Keller scored two of his three goals during the first quarter to help H-SC build a 4-2 lead.

Junior attackman Steve Rijo put CC on the board 5:16 into the game, but Keller answered with a man-up tally 2:26 later to tie the score. Eric Gorsline gave Hampden-Sydney its first lead with 6:08 remaining in the period, however that advantage was short-lived because freshman attackman Nick Ahrens scored for Colorado College just 62 seconds after that.

Jess Hawthorne put Hampden-Sydney ahead to stay with 3:30 remaining in the quarter. Keller doubled the lead nearly two minutes later after taking a pass from senior midfielder Carter Mavromatis, who finished with four assists.

“They're a veteran team and they were ready to play,” Woods said. “Their losses are against Top-10 teams and they are very seasoned. At the beginning, we were a little tight … a little anxious. We settled down and battled back to within a goal.”

CC trimmed its deficit to one goal on two occasions. Freshman Henri Halle made the score 4-3 when he notched an unassisted tally 12 seconds into the second quarter while Colorado College was playing two men up, and senior attackman Hunter Sprole cut his team's deficit to 5-4 with 9:01 remaining in the second frame.

Hampden-Sydney seized control with three consecutive goals to take build an 8-4 lead with just 15 minutes to play and CC was never able to get closer than three points.

Sophomore attacker Tyler Allen set up a pair of goals for Colorado College, while freshman midfielder Kevin Wylie won 10 of 15 faceoffs and grabbed three ground balls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Steedman finished with eight saves for CC, which slipped to 1-1 on the season.

“We certainly competed,” Woods said about his young squad. “We possessed the ball more as much as they did, if not more. It was two good teams in a tight battle. I think we held our own.”

Colorado College returns to action on Saturday, March 17, when the University of Dallas visits Washburn Field for the first conference game of the 2012 campaign.
