ODAC Players of the Week

BASEBALL
Vince Claudio, Shenandoah, Sr.,
Pitcher
Claudio, a senior from Forest, Va.,
earns his second weekly award of the season after posting a pair of
wins last week. Claudio opened the week by tossing seven strong
innings in a 7-1 win over Frostburg State. He gave up one run on
six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Claudio then
returned to the hill over the weekend at Virginia Wesleyan. He
pitched the Hornets to a 4-1 win over the Marlins, working 7.1
innings on the bump. He again game up just one run on five hits
with four walks and four punchouts. Claudio is now 6-1 with a 3.78
earned run average in 47.2 innings of work.

BASEBALL
Corey Wallace, Guilford, Sr., Third
Base
Wallace, a senior from Rockingham,
N.C., put together a strong quintet of games as Guilford went 5-0
with a pair of ODAC wins last week. Wallace went 13-of-22 (.579)
from the dish iwth seven extra-base hits including four doubles,
two triples and a homer. He drove in 13 runs and scored seven
times. He had at least two hits in each game, including a 2-for-5
day with five RBI in a 15-0 win over William Peace. He had three
RBI apiece in wins over Greensboro (9-6) and Lynchburg (8-7). He
capped his week with a 4-for-5 hitting display with two RBI in a
11-2 victory at Emory & Henry. Wallace is sixth in the ODAC in
batting (.418) and second in slugging (.740). His six triples, nine
homers and 108 total bases all lead the conference. He is second
with 48 RBI.

GOLF
Tanner Gross, Guilford,
Fr.
Gross a freshman from Archdale, N.C.,
placed third at the rain shortened Emory Spring Invitational,
finishing just one shot off the lead. His two-under par 70 awarded
him a top-10 finish for the sixth time this season as he bested 78
other golfers in the 82-man field. His efforts helped lead the
Quakers to a second place team showing at seven-over par 295. Gross
is currently ranked 13th in NCAA Division III by Golfstat, while
the Quakers hold down the sixth slot in the team standings.

GOLF
Elizabeth Cheng, Hollins,
Sr.
Cheng, a senior from Virginia Beach,
Va., bested the field at the Generals Duel hosted by Washington and
Lee. She posted a five-over par 77 at the Lexington Golf and
Country Club, besting teammate and second-place finisher Shannon
Ciccarello by six strokes. Cheng currently owns a 78.4 average thru
10 rounds played this season.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Josh Currier, Virginia Wesleyan, So.,
Attack
Currier, a sophomore from
Peterborough, Ontario, extended his goal scoring streak to 14
straight games (dating back to 2013) as he helped the Marlins to a
pair of wins last week. Currier scored six times and dished out an
assist in Virginia Wesleyan's 15-8 win at Ferrum. He followed that
with two goals and five assists with five ground balls in a 12-11
double-overtime win over Guilford. He supplied the assist on the
game-winner, which marked his ODAC-leading 32nd assist of the
season. He also leads the ODAC in goals scored (39) and points
(71). He is third NCAA Division III in points per game (6.36).

MEN'S TENNIS
Ryan Byrd, Randolph-Macon, Jr., No. 1
Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Byrd, a junior from Toano, Va., put
together a 6-0 week as he helped the Yellow Jackets to three ODAC
wins. Byrd capture all three singles wins at the No. 1 flight,
winning in straight sets. He topped the No. 1 players from
Hampden-Sydney (6-2, 7-6), Randolph (6-2, 6-2) and Shenandoah (6-3,
6-2), leading Randolph-Macon to team wins of 6-3 (H-SC), 9-0 (RAND)
and 9-0 (SU). Byrd teamed with Michael Baxter in all three
contests, earning No. 1 doubles wins of 8-5 (H-SC), 8-4 (RAND) and
8-5 (SU).

OUTDOOR TRACK
Zander Tallman, Washington and Lee, Sr.,
Springs/Mid-Distance
Tallman, a senior from Grand Blanc,
Mich., competed in four events at the Hopkins Loyola Invitational
and snapped a pair of Washington and Lee records along the way. His
first mark came in his first attempt at the 800-meter run this
season as he set a new ODAC best time and broke a 35-year old
Generals' record with a time of 1:52.68. It also ranks ninth in the
country. Tallman competed in one individual event, posting a time
of 10.84 seconds in the 100-meter dash. That ranks third in the
ODAC this season. He went on to compete in both the 4x100-meter and
4x400-meter relays, setting another W&L record in the former.
He and his teammates crossed the line in an ODAC-leading time of
41.61 seconds, which is eighth in the NCAA Division III. The
Generals' 4x400-meter team came in at 3:19.37, second in the ODAC
only to their own previous-best time of 3:19.02.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Dana Lee, Washington and Lee, Fr.,
Jumps/Sprints
Lee, a freshman from Nasville, Tenn.,
competed in four events at the Hopkins Loyola Invitational and took
over the ODAC's top spot on the seasonal charts in two events. Lee
made plenty of noise with a leap of 5.64 meters (18' 6.0") to win
the long jump and tie for eighth in NCAA Division III. It also
bettered her own ODAC season-best mark and set new W&L and meet
records in the process. She went on to finish second in the triple
jump at 10.91 meters (35' 9.5") and eighth in both the 100 meter
(12.82 sec.) and 200-meter (26.11 sec.) dashes. Her time in the
200m is the best in the ODAC this season.

SOFTBALL
Kristina Karagiorgis, Virginia Wesleyan,
Jr., Pitcher
Karagiorgis, a junior from Ashburn,
Pa., won four times and record her first save of the season as she
helped Virginia Wesleyan to a 6-0 week. She went the distance to
get a 5-0 win over William Peace to open the week, give up two hits
and walking five with four strikeouts. She followed that with five
innings towards the win in game one against EMU, an 8-3 triumph.
She gave up three runs (two earned) aon four hits with no walks and
six strikeouts. She went three innings to start game two, giving up
just one hit with a walk and two punchouts in a 14-0 shortened
victory. Karagiorgios picked up the save in a 1-0 win at
Bridgewater in game one. She worked the final three innings, giving
up just one hit with four strikeouts. She started and went three
innings in a second shortened victory, giving up three hits with
five strikeouts towards an 8-0 win. Karagiorgis leads the league in
wins with 16 as she's now 16-4 with a conference-best 1.10 earned
run average in 108.0 innings pitched. Her 103 strikeouts are second
in the league.

SOFTBALL
Tori Higginbotham, Virginia Wesleyan,
Sr., Outfielder
Higginbotham, a senior from Glen
Allen, Va., put together strong week in leading Virginia Wesleyan
to a 6-0 record. She went 12-for-20 at the dish with three doubles,
a homer and 10 runs batted in. She also scored 11 times and stole
10 bases without being caught. She had at least one hit in each
game, including a pair of 3-for-4 efforts with a homer, seven RBI,
five runs scored and five stolen bases in a doubleheader sweep
(8-3, 14-0) of Eastern Mennonite. For the season, Higginbotham is
sixth in the ODAC with a .425 batting average. She leads the league
in triples, is second in stolen bases (24) and third in RBI
(34).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Liz Bereit, Shenandoah, Jr.,
Midfielder
Bereit, a junior from Latrobe, Pa.,
put together a 13-point week as the Hornets rattled off a pair of
ODAC wins to keep them within striking distance of the top of the
ODAC standings. Bereit scored twice and dished out three assists in
a 9-7 win over Randolph-Macon. She also caused five turnovers
defensively. Over the weekend, Bereit had a hand in eight of
Shenandoah's 17 goals as the Hornets topped Virginia, 17-3. She
scored four times and helped on four others. Bereit is fourth in
the ODAC in assists (23) and eighth in points (56).

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Olayemisi Ogunshina, Randolph-Macon, No.
3/4 Singles, No. 2 Doubles
Ogunshina, a senior from Baltimore,
Md., helped the Yellow Jackets to four ODAC team match victories as
she went 8-0 last week. R-MC defeated Sweet Briar (8-1), Randolph
(7-2), Shenandoah (7-2) and Hollins (9-0). Ogunshina opened with a
6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against SBC. Shen then played out of
the No. 4 spot against Randolph and Shenandoah, posting wins of
6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1. She returned to the third flight against
Hollins, winning 6-1, 6-0. Ogunshina and teammate Kelsie Grice
paired for four wins at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-0, 9-7, 8-0 and
8-0, sequentially.
