ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: March 30, 2015

BASEBALL
John Ruhlman, Roanoke, So., Pitcher
Ruhlman, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Va., worked the longest outing of his collegiate career as the Maroons shutout Washington and Lee, 6-0, in game one of a doubleheader sweep. Ruhlman went eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits without a walk. The southpaw struck out 11 batters, including five of the first six Generals he faced. He fanned the side in the first inning. He was unscathed the first time thru W&L's lineup before a lead-off double in the fourth inning inning. Ruhlam is now 2-1 on the season with a 4.43 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 20.1 innings of work.

BASEBALL
Will Black, Roanoke, So., Catcher
Black, a sophomore from Richmond, Va., led the Maroons to a 5-0 week that included a doubleheader sweep of Washington and Lee, the first Maroons' sweep of the Generals since the two schools began playing regular conference doubleheaders in 2007. Black went 10-for-21 overall with three doubles, a triple, five RBI and eight runs scored. He also stole three bases, including a pair with two hits in a 6-3 game two win over W&L. He went 6-for-9 in the two contests against the Generals, adding two doubles in game one. Black went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in an 11-3 win over E&H. Black added three walks on the week to finish with a .476/.542/.714 slash line. He currently leads the ODAC in doubles (8) and slugging (.652), is second with a .435 batting average, and third with a .491 on-base percentage.

GOLF
Evan Cocke, Shenandoah, Jr.
Cocke, a junior from Centreville, Va., helped the Hornets' to the program's best-ever finish at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate at Camp leJeune. Cocke earned individual medalist honors in the championshi Gold division, finishing at four-under par to win by one stroke over Anthony Macaglia from Oglethorpe University. Cocke opened with a one-over 73 on the par-72 gold course, but then followed with a tournament-best five-under 65 on the scarlet layout. He posted an even-par 72 in third round, finishing at 210 for the event. Shenandoah tied for seventh as a team at 903.

GOLF
Brittany McDonaldson, Eastern Mennonite, Jr.
McDonaldson, a junior from Harrisonburg, Va., scored her first collegiate victory in the first home event in EMU's program history on Sunday, notching a career-low 77 (+7). Tied with three other women with three holes to play on the Heritage Oaks course, McDonaldson closed par-birdie-par to win by three strokes.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Mike Funk, Hampden-Sydney, Sr., Attack
Funk, a senior from Chantilly, Va., helped the Tigers to a pair of ODAC wins, including an overtime triumph over Washington and Lee. In a 9-6 win over Guilford, Funk scored twice and dished out an assist. Versus the Generals, he talled two more goals, including the game-winner in overtime. He also handed out a helper. For the season, Funk has registered 23 points on 13 goals and 10 assists.

MEN'S TENNIS
Turner Votipka, Guilford, Sr., No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Votipka, a senior from Nashville, N.C., went 6-0 last week as helped the regionally 14th-ranked Quakers to team wins over Hampden-Sydney (9-0) and Lynchburg (9-0) before a loss to #19 Virginia Wesleyan (5-4). Votipka posted a 3-0 mark at #1 singles and a 3-0 record with partner Erik Meiler at #1 doubles. He won 6-0, 6-4, in singles against H-SC, followed by a 6-0, 6-0, victory over Lynchburg's #1. He needed three sets to top Graham Wilson from VWC, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. In doubles play, Votipka and Meiler won 8-1, 8-0 and 8-6.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Harrison Toney, Roanoke, Jr.
Toney, a junior from Roanoke, Va., put together an impressive performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Raleigh Relays over the weekend. Competing against NCAA Division I competition, Toney placed 18th overall with a time of 9:19.14, just four seconds off the ODAC record. That time is currently the top-rated mark in NCAA Division III by six seconds.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Dana Lee, Washington and Lee, So., Jumps/Sprints
Lee, a sophomore from Nashville, Tenn., placed in the top-two in four events at the Jopson Invitational, winning twice. Lee claimed top prize in both the 100-meter dash and the long jump, posting marks of 13.38 seconds and 5.26 meters. She chimed in second in the triple jump at 9.98 meters. Lee and her teammates finished second in the 4x100-meter relay in 52.35 seconds.

SOFTBALL
Brandy Bryant, Emory & Henry, Sr., Pitcher
Bryant, a senior from Salem, Va., went 2-0 with two saves in four appearances last week. She won 2-1 over Roanoke with seven complete innings of work, giving up one run on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Her other win came in a 1-0 shutout of Bridgewater. She gave up just two hits, walked two and struck out a pair in another seven inning effort. Her first save came after a scoreless 1.1 innings against Bluefield as she allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two. Her second save was a came in a split appearance in which she worked five total innings an 11-9 win over EMU. She started and worked the first 4.1 before returning to record the final two outs for the save. She gave up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Bryant is now 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA. E&H is now 17-1 overall, the best start in program history.

SOFTBALL
Cassetty Howerin, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr., Catcher/Infield
Howerin, a freshman from Dover, Del., helped the Marlins to a 6-0 week with three doubleheader sweeps of ODAC teams. Howerin hit a blistering .722 as she went 13-for-18 with three doubles and a triple. She drove in seven runs and scored 10 times while also drawing a pair of walks. She had at least two hits in all six games, adding a 3-for-4 effort in game one against Randolph-Macon. She had one RBI in all but one contest, driving in two each in wins over Randolph (9-3) and Shenandoah (11-1). She finished the week with a .722/.750/1.000 slash line. For the season, Howerin owns a team-best .467 batting average, which ranks seventh in the ODAC.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Caroline Carozza, Lynchburg, Jr., Attack
Carozza, a junior from Salisbury, Md., led Lynchburg to a pair of ODAC wins last week as she put up a 16-point week. In a 20-7 triumph at Guilford, Carozza scored six times and dished out four assists to go with a caused turnover. She followed that with two goals and four more helpers as the Hornets stayed on the road for a 10-7 win at Bridgewater. For the season, Carozza now leads the ODAC with 45 points. She's second with 18 assists and sixth with 27 goals scored.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Haley Andrews, Guilford, Sr., No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Andrews, a senior from Riverside, Calif., went 4-0 last week as she helped the Quakers post wins over Lynchburg (7-2) and Virginia Wesleyan (6-2). Andrews went 2-0 at #1 singles, topping LC, 6-2, 6-2, and VWC, 6-3, 6-4. She and teammate Allison Hewitt won 8-1 and 8-3 at #1 singles against the Hornets and Marlins, respectively. The team wins were the first ODAC triumphs for the Quakers this season.
