SU's Paul Two Times an All-American to Lead ODAC Baseball Awards

Conference Players Earn 27 Postseason Awards

FOREST, Va. --- Shenandoah University third baseman Michael Paul has collected a full mantle's worth of awards in 2014 as he leads a long list of ODAC baseball stars to earn postseason awards from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com.  Paul was tabbed an All-American by both outlets and is joined by Guilford College first baseman John Macon Smith in garnering All-American recognition from the ABCA.

Paul was selected a Second Team All-American by both the ABCA and D3baseball.com, while Smith garnered Third Team All-American honors from the ABCA.  The duo lead a list of 24 all-region awards from the two national outlets, with Paul earning All-South Region Player of the Year honors from both sources.

Paul, a junior from Red Hill, Pa., helped lead Shenandoah to its first ODAC baseball title since joining the conference full-time two years ago.  He earned ODAC Player of the Year accolades for his efforts.  Paul finished the season atop the ODAC ranks in runs (56), hits (79), runs batted in (62) and total bases (129).  He finished second in batting average (.444), slugging (.725), doubles (21), home runs (9), and walks (26).  He was also third with a .510 on-base percentage.  Paul won three straight ODAC Player of the Week awards in the middle of the season, powered by a 24-game hitting streak to open the season.  That run proved to be a 26-game effort when combined with the final two games from 2013.

Smith, a senior from Greensboro, N.C., collected his second straight ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete honor in addition to consecutive appearances on the All-ODAC First Team. Smith led the ODAC in both batting average (.459) and OBP (.531), while finishing in the top-five in several other categories including runs (44-5th), hits (68-4th), triples (4-3rd), RBI (40-4th), total bases (102-3rd) and slugging (.689-3rd).  He enjoyed several moderate hittings streak this season, including a 14-game run that included an effort where he hit safely in 18 his final 20 games played.
