The Basics

Score: No. 6 Roanoke 4, No. 4 Emory 2
Records: Roanoke 31-16, Emory 27-14
Location: Danville, Va.

How it Happened

  • A solo home run by Brian Hernandez to lead off the bottom of the second inning gave Emory a 1-0 advantage.
  • The score stayed that way until the Roanoke fifth inning where with one out, Eli Sumpter singled and Sean Guida walked. They both moved up on a wild pitch and Sumpter tied the game when Collier Donald delivered a sacrifice fly.  Guida, who moved to third on Donald's fly out, would then score on a wild pitch to give RC a 2-1 lead.
  • After the final out of the RC fifth, a one hour and forty five minute weather delay ensued.
  • When play resumed, Emory was able to tie the game in the sixth inning after Nick Chambers singled to open the inning, stole second, moved to third on a bunt and came home on a groundout.
  • In the Roanoke eighth, Sam Watson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to second on a Scott Ellis sacrifice bunt.  Watson moved to third on a Craig Kiley groundout and gave RC the lead when he scored following an error on a Will Black groundball.
  • RC tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Guida laid down a bunt single to lead off the inning.  Donald advanced Guida to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Will Decker was intentionally walked and Guida moved to third on a fielder's choice off the bat of Ellis. Watson then delivered a two-out RBI single to push across Guida and make it a 4-2 game.
  • Emory drew a leadoff walk to start the ninth but Sumpter got the final three outs to secure the win for Sal Trancucci who came in for starter Steven Loney following the weather delay.
  • Loney went four innings allowing just three hits and one run. Trancucci (6-2) followed with four innings of two hit relief and threw 44 pitches, 32 of which for strikes.
  • Billy Dimlow (6-2) took the loss for Emory after going 7.2 innings and allowing three runs. The loss eliminates the Eagles from the tournament.
