Marlins Hold Off Castelton to Continue in Regional Play

YORK Pa. --- The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team survived another day at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Friday afternoon as it defeated Castleton University, 4-3, at People's Bank Park. With the win, the Marlins move to 29-15 on the season.

After giving up a single run in the bottom of the first, the Marlins fired right back to take the lead with a two-run second inning. With two outs, Zack Clark beamed one down the left field line for a double. He was then brought home as Brady Fallon sent a single into right field, tying the game at 1-1. Jordan Sprouse then got in on the action, with a single to right that put runners on the corners. An error on a Deon Hammond hit would eventually allow Fallon to reach home.

Castleton put up another run to tie it back up in the fifth, but the Marlins had more left in them with another two run inning, this time coming in the eighth. Randy Neisz got things going with a one out single down the line and was moved to second as Jacob Pilarski was walked in the next at-bat. A wild pitch would advance both runners and Clark would produce a sac fly to plate Neisz from third. Fallon would then single, bringing home Pilarski for an insurance run.

That extra run proved to be useful as the Spartans plated one in the ninth, but Glen Pizzanello forced to fly outs to close out the game.

Pilarski got the start on the bump, punching out five through 5.0 innings of work. Andrew Lowe picked up his second win of the year (2-0) as he dealt a hitless 2.0 innings. Pizzanello would toss the final two frames to pick up his sixth save of the year.

Baseball will now wait for the loser of the Babson Vs. Union game to find out who they will play next. The Marlins will take to the field against the loser of that outcome at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday.
