H-SC's Favret, W&L's Hollerith, E&H's Boden also Honored
FOREST, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College running back Will McGhee and Hampden-Sydney College linebacker Tyler Ikwild highlight the 2013 All-ODAC football awards, earning the J. Stokeley Fulton Offensive and Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year awards, respectively. H-SC mentor Marty Favret secured ODAC Coach of the Year honors, while Washington and Lee University running back Marshall Hollerith earned ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition. Emory & Henry College quarterback Kyle Boden was tabbed the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete for the second straight year by the league's sports information directors.
McGhee, a senior from Fishersville, Va., put together one of the best rushing seasons in ODAC history on the way to his second straight All-ODAC First Team appearance. McGhee leads the ODAC with 1,676 yards rushing, which ranks second on the conference's all-time single-season list behind former E&H standout Sandy Rogers (1,730 in 1986). McGhee's total currently sits fourth in the country. He tied atop the ODAC with 16 rushing touchdowns, notching 17 overall to lead the league with 102 points. His 292 carries are the third-most in conference history. McGhee was recently named the Offensive Back of the Year in the College Division by the Touchdown Club of Richmond. After starting off the year with just 42 yards against Johns Hopkins, McGhee ran for at least 123 yards in eight of the nine remaining games. He eclipsed 200 yards three times, highlighted by a 296-yard three-touchdown showing against Bethany (W.Va.), the third-highest single-game rushing yardage total in conference history.
Ikwild, a senior from Philomont, Va., put together a strong season from the middle of Hampden-Sydney's linebacking corps. He finished tied for second in the ODAC with 98 total tackles, posting the third-most solo stops with 54. He also racked up 13 tackles for a loss that set opposing offenses back 25 yards, and notched 1.5 sacks. He forced one fumble and got back in pass coverage to breakup four passes. Ikwild registered five games with nine or more tackles, including a 17-stop day in the Tigers' ODAC title-clinching win over Randolph-Macon. It was in that contest that he may have made his most important stop, plugging a hole with 1:35 to play on a two-point attempt by R-MC that preserved H-SC's 28-26 victory. Over his last three games, Ikwild has made 41 tackles, including nine against Maryville (Tenn.) in the NCAA tournament first round.
Favret is in his 14th season holding the coaching reins at Hampden-Sydney, having racked up a 104-41 (.717) career record. He is 63-23 (.733) in games against ODAC opponents. Favret guided the Tigers to their eighth overall ODAC title in 2013, which marks the program's fourth in the last seven years. The conference crown afforded Hampden-Sydney a trip to the NCAA Division III Football Tournament, where Favret's Tigers posted their first win in five tries in the opening round, defeating Maryville (Tenn.), 42-34, in Hampden-Sydney. H-SC travels to McMinnville, Ore., for a second round matchup with Linfield College on Saturday (11/30).
Hollerith, a freshman from Richmond, Va., stepped into the lead running back role in Washington and Lee's multiple option offense and excelled, setting Generals' rookie records for rushing yardage and touchdowns. Hollerith ranks fourth in the ODAC with 1,021 yards rushing. His 13 ground-game touchdowns are third in the league, helping him to fourth in the ODAC in scoring with 78 points. He eclipsed 100 yards rushing in six games this season, twice putting together three-game streaks including the final three of W&L's season. His 151 yards and three touchdowns in a victory over Sewanee marked his first century-mark outing, while the 184 yards he gained in a win over Catholic University proved a season-high.
Boden, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., maintains a 3.985 grade point average as a Biology and Chemistry double-major. He is a finalist for 2013 Capital One Academic All-America recognition from CoSIDA, from which he earned second team honors in 2012. He is a three-time Academic All-District honoree, having earned those accolades each of the past three seasons. A six-time Dean's List honoree, Boden is a Rhodes Scholar finalist, the first for Emory & Henry in 109 years. On the field, Boden will graduate second in school history on the career passing yards and completions charts, as he is the only quarterback to throw for over 2,000 yards in a single-season --- a feat he's accomplished three times. This year, he completed 66.2-percent (217-of-328) of his passes for 2,531 yards and 21 touchdowns against seven interceptions. His best game came in a 61-22 win over Methodist in which he threw for 382 yards and five touchdowns, while setting a new ODAC single-game record by completed 29-of-31 passes for 93.5-percent.
