The ODAC regular season came to a close with plenty of
fireworks, leaving a four-way tie atop the ODAC standings.
Hampden-Sydney College, despite a loss to Randolph-Macon
College in the 120th edition of "The Game" on Saturday, earned its
second straight and ninth overall conference title after coming out
ahead in a pair of head-to-head tiebreakers. The Tigers will
head to Wesley College in the first round of the NCAA Division III
Tournament.
In addition to Randolph-Macon's 24-10 win at Hampden-Sydney,
Bridgewater College, Guilford College and Washington and Lee
University posted victories. Bridgewater went to the nation's
capital to pick up its eighth win of the year via a 40-13 final
over Catholic University. Guilford collected its eighth "W"
with a 52-28 triumph at Emory & Henry College. Washington
and Lee capped its season at home with a 40-23 victory over
Shenandoah University.
The Eagles, Wasps, Quakers and Tigers all sat tied at 5-2 in
conference play following Saturday's slate of games. H-SC and
GC were 2-1 against the group in the first head-to-head comparison,
separating themselves from BC and E&H, who posted 1-2 records
in the four-team snapshot. In further comparison
between the Tigers and Quakers, H-SC's regular season win over GC
secured the ODAC title and NCAA Tournament bid.
Guilford quarterback Matt Pawlowski and Washington and Lee
defensive back Michael Shields are the ODAC Players of the Week.
Pawlowski threw for 389 yards and five touchdowns on 38-of-48
passing (79.2%). He completed passes to nine different
receivers. Three of his TDs came in a second-half span where
the Quakers out-scored Emory & Henry, 28-7. Shields put
the finishing touches on his rookie season with an 11-tackle day in
the Generals' win. In the first quarter, he forced and
recovered a fumble at the W&L one-yard line to stop a
Shenandoah scoring attempt on first-and-goal.
Hampden-Sydney will make the trip to Dover, Del., to square off
with Wesley College in the first round of the NCAA Division III
Tournament. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. The Tigers
and Wolverines have previously met five times, with WC holding a
4-1 advantage in the all-time series. Hampden-Sydney won the
first meeting between the two foes in 1991, posting a 50-49
triumph. Wesley has rattled off victories in the last four
contests, including their most recent showdown in the first round
of the NCAA postseason in 2007. In that contest, Wesley led
by as much as 35 points at 38-3 in the third quarter before a pair
of H-SC touchdowns cut it to 38-17 entering the final frame.
The Wolverines tacked on one more touchdown to post a 45-17
win. The winner of Saturday's contest will meet either Husson
University (8-1) or MIT (9-0) in the second round.
