ODAC Football Report: Week 3

READ THE ODAC FOOTBALL REPORT: WEEK 3

All eight ODAC squads completed the non-conference portions of the schedules on Saturday, but just three came away with victories heading into next week's set of byes. All three squads remain undefeated on the season.  Catholic University and Guilford College used late scores to help them move to 3-0, while Randolph-Macon College jumped out to a double-digit lead on the way to its third victory in as many games.

THE GAMES

APPRENTICE SCHOOL 26, BRIDGEWATER 23 -- Box Score
Bridgewater trailed, 14-3, at the half, but pulled to within 26-23 with 6:50 to play. The Eagles' final two drives ended prematurely, leaving The Apprentice School with a three-point victory. Running back Malivai Barker led the way for the BC offense, rushing for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He also led in receiving with 73 yards on five catches, giving him 209 all-purpose yards for the game.

CATHOLIC 37, U.S. COAST GUARD 35 -- Box Score
Catholic found itself in a tight contest with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, holding no more than a 13-point lead. CUA's final score, a 51-yard touchdown pass from Jorge Pola to Matt Perno, provided the winning margin as it helped the Cardinals withstand a late touchdown by the USCGA for a 37-35 win. Pola threw four touchdown passes, three of which went to Lucas Morley. Morley caught four TD passes in total, tying the ODAC record and becoming the only player in league history to catch four TD passes in a game twice.

MARYVILLE (TENN.) 43, EMORY & HENRY 36 -- Box Score
Emory & Henry churned out 552 yards of total offense, but five turnovers short-circuited the Wasps' efforts in a 43-36 setback to Maryville (Tenn.). Kevin Saxton threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers, which Jesse Santiago hauling in seven passes for 182 yards. Isaiah Rodgers and Dominic Dunnavile ran for scores, with Rodgers racking up 93 yards on the ground.

GUILFORD 30, AVERETT 28 -- Box Score
Guilford trailed Averett on three separate occasions on Saturday, but a fourth quarter field goal by Erick Fuentes and touchdown pass from Karsten Miller to Daniel Woodruff proved enough to hold off the Cougars, 30-28. Miller threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns while running in a fourth. De'Eric Bell increased his ODAC rushing lead with 146 yards on 27 carries. Tyriek Russell hauled in 15 passes for 136 yards.  The 15 receptions tie for eighth-most in ODAC history.

FERRUM 42, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 20 -- Box Score
Hampden-Sydney owned a 20-7 lead early in the second quarter, but 35 unanswered points by Ferrum provided the Panthers with a 42-20 result on neutral ground at Salem Stadium in Salem, Va. Owen Costello led all receivers with nine catches for 143 yards and a touchdown Mike Demasi ran for 53 yards and score, while quarterback Alec Cobb threw a touchdown pass and ran one in.

RANDOLPH-MACON 34, METHODIST 16 -- Box Score
Randolph-Macon's offense turned in a balanced performance, posting 252 yards thru the air and 231 rushing on the way to a 34-16 win. Four of R-MC's touchdowns came via the ground with Dom Kaopua running in a pair and Tre Frederick and Eric Hoy notching one each. Frederick totaled 136 yards on 28 carries. Hoy caught six passes for 133 yards. Defensively, Marcus Mitchell led all players with 11 tackles and a sack.

N.C. WESLEYAN 31, SHENANDOAH 13 -- Box Score
Shenandoah's rushing offense could not get on track against N.C. Wesleyan, leaving the passing game to account for all 347 yards of offense in the Hornets 31-13 setback to N.C. Wesleyan. Quarterback Hayden Bauserman threw for 306 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Cedrick Delaney, who rushed for 18 yards on six carries, led SU's receiving corps with eight catches for 94 yards and a score. Qlyl Middelijn also had eight receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Micheal Wroble led all defensive players with 14 tackles.

CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS 31, WASHINGTON AND LEE 28 -- Box Score
Washington and Lee led 28-10 with 8:57 on the third quarter clock, but 21 unanswered points including a 34-yard field goal as time expired led to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 31-28 victory. W&L ran for 379 yards with each of its four touchdowns coming from different rushers. Quarterback Charlie Nelson led with 109 yards, while Evan Hinkle, Marshall Hollerith, and McKenna Johnston scored once each and combined for 175 yards. Oliver Herndon notched the remaining score. Defensively, Will Dyson became the first ODAC play in two years to intercept three passes in a game, which ties for sixth in conference history.

ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSE: Catholic University wide receiver Lucas Morley, a senior from Olney, Md., moved to the top of the ODAC receiving rankings in touchdown receptions with four on Saturday in the Cardinals 37-35 victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Morley, the ODAC's leading receiver in 2015-16 with 100 catches, hauled in all four of his scores in the first half as Catholic built a 27-7 halftime lead.  He caught TD passes of 20, 18, 8 and 21 yards on the way to the second four-touchdown game of his career.  He finished the day with six catches for 113 yards, which marked his first 100-plus yard receiving day of the season. Morley's four touchdowns tie the ODAC's all-time single-game record, making him the only receiver to do it twice in league history.  On the season, he leads the league with seven touchdown catches and is tied for second with 20 receptions.

DEFENSE: Washington and Lee University cornerback Will Dyson, a senior from Indian Springs, Ala., helped spearhead the Generals' defensive unit in a 31-28 last-second loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday. Dyson tallied three tackles, three interceptions, and three other passes broken up in the contest. His second interception occurred on the W&L 2-yardline with 50-seconds remaining in the first half, preserving a 21-3 lead at intermission. Dyson is the first ODAC player to intercept three passes since 2014, tying for sixth all-time in the conference record books. He is the first General to pick off that many passes since Jake Pelton '13 nabbed a trio in the 2012 season-opener against Franklin & Marshall.  For the season, Dyson has registered 10 tackles and four interceptions with four passes broken up.
