FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University garnered four major individual awards and earned 12 selections to all-conference teams to headline the 2017 All-ODAC Football Awards. Hampden-Sydney College receiver Cam Johnson was named the J. Stokeley Fulton Offensive Player of the Year, while W&L linebacker Max Garrett took home Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year and ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete laurels. Generals mentor Scott Abell was tabbed the ODAC Coach of the Year, while W&L running back Josh Breece received ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition.

A good mix of returning and new talent dot the all-conference lists with 23 repeat honorees from a season ago. That group includes 11 on this year's All-ODAC First Team. Randolph-Macon leads that contingent with four returning award winners on this year's first team. Running back Tre Frederick and offensive lineman Greg Castle were first teamers last season, while defensive lineman Jake Pinkston was a second team choice and offensive lineman Jay Hausler was a third team selection.

Hampden-Sydney's Johnson and tight end Patrick Kline both make the jump from the third team, while Shenandoah features the passing duo of quarterback Hayden Bauserman and receiver Michael Ashwell, who both were first teamers last year. W&L linebacker Garrett and offensive lineman Chris Osier were also repeat first team selections, along with Bridgewater College cornerback Isaac Evans.

Johnson, a senior from Dillwyn, Va., put together a stellar season as the key to Hampden-Sydney's passing game. The nation's leading receiver at 11.0 catches per game hauled in 110 passes overall to not only lead the ODAC but tie for the second-highest reception total in league history with former H-SC standout Drew Smith (2007) and fall just short of 111 catches by another Tiger receiver, Holton Walker (2013). His previous season-high was 58 catches in 2015. Johnson led the ODAC and ranks fifth in NCAA Division III (with NCAA games still to play for 16 teams) with 1,261 yards powered by eight games of 100 or more yards. Featured in that total are a pair of 200-yard efforts, including a 19-catch 230-yard explosion in the final game of the season. Those 19 receptions are the third-most in a game in league history. He had two TDs in that contest and one in a 12-catch 204-yard day two weeks prior. Johnson will graduate having caught 219 passes for 2,740 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Garrett, a senior from Fairfield, Conn., starred both on and off the field for the Generals. In the classroom, Garrett maintains a 3.93 grade point average as an Accounting and Business Administration double major. He is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, having picked up three appointments to the All-ODAC Academic Team and the Washington and Lee Dean's List. On the field, Garrett is now a three-time All-ODAC First Team selection, picking up those honors over the past three seasons. He matched his 2016 total in leading the ODAC with 109 total tackles. He upped his ante on solo stops by two with a league-best 61 stops. He made a pair of tackles for a loss and picked off two passes. He registered six games of 10 or more tackles, including a season and career-high 18 stops in the ODAC title-clinching victory at Shenandoah. Garrett will graduate having registered 376 total tackles including 204 solo stops, 8.5 tackles for a loss, four interceptions, and eight passes broken up.

Abell completed his sixth season guiding the Generals football program and enjoys his third ODAC top coaching honor, pairing this honor with the recognition he earned in 2012 and 2015. Washington and Lee has won three ODAC titles and made three trips to the NCAA Tournament in Abell's tenure, including a run to the program's seventh overall conference crown this season. His Generals made their fifth appearance on the national stage this season, drawing national power Mount Union. W&L put together a strong outing, falling to the Purple Raiders, 21-0, in adverse weather in Alliance, Ohio, on Saturday, November 18. Finishing the season at 8-3 overall and 5-1 in league play, Abell's career records stand at 39-24 (.619) and 28-13 (.683), respectively.

Breece, a freshman from Lorton, Va., added a game-breaking component to W&L's explosive multi-option offense on the way to racking up an ODAC single-season record 1,825 rushing yards. That total ranks third in NCAA Division III. He registered nine games of 100-yards or more and scored two or more touchdowns in a game five times on the way to a league-best 18 rushing touchdowns and a chart-topping 108 points. He also led the ODAC in rushes (237) and yards per carry (7.7). Breece went over the 200-yard mark three times including a 223-yard four-touchdown effort midway thru the season and a 280-yard three-touchdown outing that featured a school-record 95-yard sprint in the final regular season game of the season. Those 280 yards are the ninth-highest output in ODAC single-game history.
