ODAC Football Report: Week 5

FOREST, Va. --- All eight teams were involved in conference play this weekend, some taking the field for the first time in three weeks due to a combination of bye dates and weather-affected schedules. Bridgewater, Hampden-Sydney, and Randolph-Macon each sit 1-0 in the ODAC standings following wins in their first league games.

Bridgewater picked up its win on the road at Guilford thanks in part to more than 37-minutes of possession and a 41-yard field goal with just over three minutes to play from Logan Weis to provide the winning margin. Hampden-Sydney scored eight offensive touchdowns and had three receivers go over 100 yards in its 56-27 home win over Emory & Henry. Ferrum evened its league record at 1-1 with a 38-21 victory at Shenandoah powered by a school-record 260 yards and two scores on the ground by Brian Mann. Randolph-Macon also won on the road, 23-7 at Washington and Lee, as the Yellow Jackets nearly doubled the Generals' number of plays and held the ball for more than 39 minutes.

Seven schools will be in action next weekend with a trio of conference games and Emory & Henry capping its non-conference slate. Ferrum is off on its scheduled bye.

ODAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hampden-Sydney quaterback Alec Cobb, a senior from Jamestown, N.C., helped the Tigers to their first win of the season after being idle for the past three weeks. Cobb set a new personal career-record with 514 passing yards in the 56-27 triumph over Emory & Henry. He has thrown for 1,304 yards and 10 touchdowns in three career games against E&H. Cobb's 514-yard total on Saturday is second in Hampden-Sydney history and seventh on the ODAC single-game lists just behind former H-SC signal-caller Corey Sedlar's 522-yard effort in 2009 against Gettysburg College. Cobb was 36-of-54 with five touchdowns thru the air. He added a sixth score via a 1-yard rush midway thru the first quarter. Cobb completed passes to seven different receivers with three going over 100-yards -- Major Morgan (11 for 181), Blake Page (8 for 109), and Kaleb Smith (10 for 105). He hit Morgan with a pair of TD passes while Page, Kaleb Smith, and Brandon Smith hauled in the remaining scoring throws.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hampden-Sydney linebacker Chad Vanlandingham, a senior from Mechanicsville, Va., helped the Tigers return from a three-week hiatus to defeat Emory & Henry, 56-27. Vanlandingham was stellar on Hampden-Sydney's defensive front that shutdown the Wasps offense while the Tigers attack built a strong lead. He tied for team-high honors with seven tackles including 3.0 for a loss that cost Emory & Henry 19 yards of offense. Two of his TFLs went for sacks, including one that was a strip-sack which H-SC recovered just outside its own red zone. That helped set the tone for the Tigers' defense, which held E&H to just 32 yards over a six-drive stretch in the second and third quarters, allowing the offense to tack on 21 unanswered points over that period. Vanlandingham is third in the ODAC with 5.0 tackles for loss with two sacks. He's made 17 total stops over H-SC's first three games.
