Randolph-Macon Wins ODAC Football Championship

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Sophomore Jordan Hall (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) rushed for 99 yards and four touchdowns as the Randolph-Macon football team won 48-35 at Hampden-Sydney Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Everett Stadium to give the Yellow Jackets the ODAC championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Tigers mishandled the opening kickoff and started on their own 4. H-SC had a long pass play on its first snap, but junior DeAngelo Barr (Washington, D.C./Fairfax) forced a fumble and junior Anthony Williams (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) recovered on the R-MC 8.
• Following a pair of punts, the Yellow Jackets moved to the H-SC 25 and lined up for a 42-yard field goal attempt into a stiff wind. Senior holder Christian Redman (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) ran a fake and was tackled on the H-SC 29 to end the drive.
• On its second play of the subsequent drive, Williams snared an interception and gave the Yellow Jackets the ball on the H-SC 40 late in the first quarter. R-MC needed eight plays to reach the end zone, as sophomore Jordan Hall (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) went in from one yard out to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-0 lead with 13:38 left in the second period.
• Another mishandled kickoff gave the Tigers the ball on their own 1. The R-MC defense held on a three-and-out and fair caught the punt on the H-SC 25. The Yellow Jackets used 12 plays to tally their second TD, a one-yard keeper by junior quarterback Burke Estes (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) as the visitors took a 14-0 advantage with 6:49 left in the second quarter.
• The R-MC defense had another 3-and-out, fair catching a punt on its own 30. The Yellow Jackets drove 70 yards in 16 plays, as Estes hit senior Owen Ritter (York, Pa./Dallastown) on a 15-yard scoring strike with five seconds left in the first half as R-MC led 21-0 at intermission.
• The Yellow Jackets dominated the stats in the first half, holding the ball for nearly 25 minutes. R-MC had 228 total yards, including 153 on the ground. H-SC had 108 yards, of which 86 came on the first play. The Tigers had only three rushing yards. The Yellow Jackets had 15 first downs, just one for H-SC.
• Jordan Foster returned the second-half kickoff 69 yards to the H-SC 26. Three runs by Hall, the final five to the end zone, gave R-MC a 27-0 lead with 1:24 elapsed in the third quarter.
• Following a Tiger TD, Hall capped a 78-yard drive with a two-yard scoring run as the R-MC lead grew to 34-7 with 5:55 left in the third period.
• After a quick H-SC score, Estes hit senior Sean McDonald (Clarke County, Va./Clarke County) on a 12-yard scoring pass as R-MC went up 41-14 with 1:07 left in the third quarter.
• Williams had his second pick of the game late in the third period and Hall had his fourth TD of the game, a six-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter as R-MC took a 48-14 lead. The Tigers had the final three scores of the game as it ended 48-35.

BY THE NUMBERS

• R-MC held the ball for nearly 44 minutes, compared to 16 for H-SC.
• The Yellow Jackets ran 90 plays, while the Tigers had 46.
• R-MC had a balanced attack with 464 yards of total offense, with 233 on the ground and 231 through the air.
• Senior Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) had eight receptions for 115 yards. He rushed eight times for 32 yards.
• Senior Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) had 55 yards on 18 carries, while Estes rushed 15 times for 52 yards.

NOTES

• R-MC won its 11th ODAC title, matching Emory & Henry for the most in conference history. The Yellow Jackets have won two of the past three league crowns.
• The Yellow Jackets have beaten the Tigers five straight times and in seven of the past eight meetings.

Randolph-Macon will play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament next Saturday, Nov. 17. The pairings will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. ET.
