FOREST, Va. --- The 2019 ODAC season opened with seven squads in action against non-conference opponents and the remaining two off either on scheduled byes (Ferrum) or due to inclement weather (Shenandoah). Bridgewater and new ODAC member Southern Virginia posted the conference's lone victories on the weekend, combining to outscore their opponents, 75-31.
BRIDGEWATER 41, GETTYSBURG 10 | Box Score
Bridgewater opened with 34 unanswered first half points en route to trouncing Gettysburg College for a second straight year via a 41-10 score. Jay Scroggins fired three TD passes, while Jarrod Denham was "Mr. Touchdown" with three scores on each of his three touches of the football. Chase Rosenthal intercepted a pair of passes and ran one back for a touchdown, while Gary Ramey, Jr. and Da'Sean Davis led with 1.5 TFLs/sacks on a BC defense that registered seven sacks on the day.
N.C. WESLEYAN 31, EMORY & HENRY 24 (OT) | Box Score
The Wasps scored with 38-seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but came up on the wrong side of the result following the first extra frame in a 31-24 home loss to N.C. Wesleyan. This was the first overtime game for E&H since the Wasps won at Ferrum, 13-10, in four OT periods in 1997. Receiver Derrick Yates hauled in nine passes for 137 yards and a score, one of two TD passes thrown by Colin Ellis. The Wasps signal-caller also ran one in for a touchdown. Ivan Phillips led the defense with 12 stops including 1.5 for a loss. Jay Kreimes, Deondre Chambliss, and Daniel Flowe picked off passes.

Guilford found itself in a shootout in near 100-degree temperatures in Montgomery, Ala., as the two teams combined for 998 yards of total offense. Alex Manley tossed four TD passes for the Quakers, while Jermaine Russell hauled in three passes for 145 yards and touchdown to go with an 83-yard kick return TD. Evan Carnes caught 3 TD passes amongst his five receptions. Khayree Lundy led all players with 15 stops in his first collegiate outing.
AVERETT 28, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 16 | Box Score
Hampden-Sydney and Averett traded jabs in the early going, but two third-quarter touchdowns by the Cougars and a couple of defensive stops gave Averett the breathing room it needed to post a 28-16 victory. H-SC quarterback Clay Vick threw for 360 yards and a touchdown in his first collegiate start. Kaleb Smith ran for 109 yards, while Major Morgan pulled in 13 passes for 169 yards. Kicker Rhett Andersen was 3-for-3 on field goals including a school-record 48-yard boot early in the fourth quarter. Griffin Davis and Stephen Cash led the defense with seven stops each, while Jordan Fields intercepted a pass.
JOHNS HOPKINS 17, RANDOLPH-MACON 12 | Box Score
In a clash of nationally-ranked squads, #6 Johns Hopkins used four second-half interceptions to fuel its way to a 17-12 win over #24 Randolph-Macon. Both defenses were strong throughout, limiting their opponents to less that 280 yards of total offense each. Bryan Sullivan led R-MC's unit with nine tackles, while Zion Dennis intercepted a pass. Tre Frederick and Burke Estes combined for 121 yards on the ground, while Andrew Ihle ran in R-MC's lone touchdown. Colin Brooker was 2-for-2 on field goals.

SOUTHERN VIRGINIA 34, MONTCLAIR STATE 21 | Box Score
Southern Virginia opened its first season under the ODAC banner with a 34-21 home win over Montclair State. While the Knights were out-gained, 469-280, the SVU defense forced four turnovers including three interceptions. Justin Mitchell, Caleb Sturges, and Jacob Taloa came away with those picks. Isaac McArthur led the unit with eight stops. Offensively, Dave Pinkston tossed a trio of TD passes, while Akiva Wedge ran for 65 yards and a touchdown. Josh Newman caught a touchdown pass and returned a kickoff 43 yards for a touchdown.
DICKSINSON 26, WASHINGTON AND LEE 14 | Box Score
Dickinson put points on the board in each quarter and held the Generals to just 282 yards of offense in its 26-14 win over Washington and Lee. The loss is the first in the five game series for W&L. The Generals completed 15 passes against DC, the most since posting 17 in a 42-35 loss to Hampden-Sydney in the final game of the 2011 season. Linebacker Will Corry picked up where he left off last season when he led the ODAC in tackles for a loss. He posted 12 stops with 2.0 TFLs (including 1.0 sacks). Quarterback Drew Richardson ran for two touchdowns and a team-high 73 yards.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bridgewater receiver Jarrod Denham, a senior from Alexandria, Va., was lightning in a bottle for the Eagles in their 41-10 season-opening victory over Gettysburg College. Denham touched the ball just three times in the contest, but all three resulted in touchdowns covering 14 or more yards. He opened the game's scoring early in the first quarter when he hauled in an over-the-shoulder throw from Jay Scroggins for a 41-yard touchdown reception. Denham etched his name in the BC record books with his second score midway thru the second quarter. He burst thru the line for a 93-yard touchdown run, marking the second-longest rush in school history. He found the painted grass for a third time early in the fourth quarter. Denham took an end-around hand-off 14 yards for the score, capping his day with 141 all-purpose yards.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bridgewater cornerback Chase Rosenthal, a junior from Chesapeake, Va., had a hand in two of the three turnovers forced by Bridgewater's defense and helped put points on the board in the Eagles 41-10 triumph over Gettysburg. Rosenthal, who made one tackle on the day, came up with a pair of first-half interceptions as the Eagles built a 34-0 edge at halftime. His first takeaway came late in the first quarter and with the Bullets pinned deep in their own territory. On the first play of the drive, Rosenthal intercepted a pass at the 8-yard line and scampered to the end zone for a 13-0 BC advantage. His second interception came a few minutes before halftime. With Gettysburg in BC territory, Rosenthal intercepted a pass at the Eagles' 28-yard line and returned it 36 yards to the Bullets 36. Three plays later, Bridgewater tacked on its final points of the half to go up 34-0.
