Bridgewater's Scroggins, Myers Headline All-ODAC Football Awards

FOREST, Va. --- Bridgewater College collected a league-best 18 all-conference awards and earned four of the five special individual honors to highlight the 2019 All-ODAC Football Awards.

Eagles' quarterback Jay Scroggins earned the J. Stokeley Fulton Offensive Player of the Year award, while linebacker Re'Shaun Myers earned a second straight Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year honor. Bridgewater mentor Mike Clark earned ODAC Coach of the Year laurels from his peers, while Eagles' receiver Viante Tucker collected ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition. Washington and Lee University offensive tackle Sean Clark earned ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades for the league's sports information directors.

While plenty of recognition was secured by first time selections in 2019, 33 athletes earned honors for at least the second straight season. That list includes 14 members of the All-ODAC First Team with seven on either side of the ball. Offensively, Emory & Henry College lineman Tyler Weterrings and Hampden-Sydney College receiver Major Morgan are repeat first teamers along with Bridgewater lineman Will Hoffman. Randolph-Macon College running back and all-time ODAC leading rusher Tre Frederick is back on the first team after an All-ODAC Second Team choice in 2018. He's joined by fellow 2018 second teamers in E&H receiver Derrick Yates and W&L's Clark. H-SC kicker Rhett Anderson joins the first team after an All-ODAC Third Team nod last season.

On defense, BC's Myers is accompanied by teammate and defensive back Matt Dang and R-MC lineman Steve McNair as repeat first team seletions. Fellow Yellow Jacket Calvin Whitehead steps up from last year's second team along with Eagles' linebacker Gary Ramey, Jr., and W&L's duo of lineman Andrew Frailer and linebacker Will Corry.

Scroggins, a senior from Fredericksburg, Va., was the steadying force to Bridgewater's offense as he both produced strong numbers and did so extremely efficiently. Scroggins led the ODAC in completion percentage (65.6%), passing yards (2,398), and passing efficiency (161.8), while finishing second in completions (191), attempts, (291), yards per game (218.0), and touchdown passes (25). He only threw two interceptions for the year. Scroggins tossed at least two touchdown passes in all but one game this season with three scoring throws in five contests. While not necessarily a running quarterback, he did prove adept with his feet to the tune of three touchdown runs. Scroggins will graduate having thrown for 6,526 yards and 65 touchdowns.

Myers, a senior from Ringgold, Va., is the first two-time and back-to-back winner of the Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year award since it was inaugurated in 2004. Myers racked up 98 tackles on the season including 52 solo stops. Those numbers rank third and fourth in the ODAC. His 6.0 quarterback sacks and 11.5 tackles for a loss both ranked third in the conference. He also forced three fumbles. Myers put together some of his best performances against the Eagles' toughtest opponents this season. He posted 12 stops with 3.0 sacks and 4.0 TFLs in a key non-conferene victory at Stevenson. He racked up a season-best 15 tackles with 2.0 TFLs in an ODAC-clinching win over Randolph-Macon. He capped his career with 14 stops in Bridgewater's playoff contest with Delaware Valley. Myers posted 208 tackles including 22.0 for a loss and 9.0 sacks for his career.

Clark just completed his 25th year guiding the Eagles program. This is the sixth time he has earned the ODAC's top coaching honor as he previously joined the awards list in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2009. The Eagles' improvement was marked in 2019 as they increased their win total from six to 10 games and earned the program's first ODAC title since 2005. Bridgewater also earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2005. Clark's career record stands at 164-101-1 (.618) including a 92-62 (.597) mark in ODAC play.

Tucker, a first-year from Salem, Va., proved a big play dual threat for the Eagles offense as he showcased his outstanding speed as both a runner and receiver. He racked up five touchdowns offensively with three receiving and two more from running situations. Each one of his scoring plays covered 11 or more yards with four touchdowns at greater than 20 yards. Those were highlighted by a 45-yard touchdown reception in a win over Guilford and a 34-yard touchdown run in the ODAC title-clincher against Randolph-Macon. He finished the season with 321 all-purpose yards.

Clark, a senior from Washington, D.C., stands out on and off the field as he pairs this honor with an All-ODAC First Team selection. In the classroom, Clark boasts a 3.87 grade point average as an accounting major. A three-time ODAC All-Academic honoree, Clark has earned W&L Scholar-Athlete recognition each term. He is the recipient of the Johnson Scholarship, which is the highest academic scholarship at Washington and Lee. He serves as the head of the Williams Investment Society, where students invest real money from the school's endowment in the financial sector.

On the field, Clark is a three-year starter at offensive tackle. He earned All-ODAC Second Team honors in 2018 and All-ODAC Third Team laurels in 2017. He spearheads an offensive line unit that helped the Generals to 30th in NCAA Division III in total offense (441.9 ypg) and fifth in rushing offense (315.7 ypg).
