Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn announced that Scott Abell has been promoted to head football coach effective immediately. Abell had previously served as the program’s assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He replaces Frank Miriello, who announced his retirement from coaching earlier this week after 17 seasons as W&L's head coach.

Washington and Lee mentor Frank Miriello has announced his retirement as the school’s head football coach effective immediately. Miriello will remain as an instructor of physical education through the remainder of the current term. Miriello spent 17 seasons coaching Generals' football.

W&L quarterback Charlie Westfal has been named the 2011 recipient of the Willie Lanier Award, presented annually to the best college football player in NCAA Division II, III and NAIA in Virginia. The award is sponsored by the Touchdown Club of Richmond and the Richmond Times Dispatch and was presented at a special ceremony in Richmond on Wednesday evening.

The Hampden-Sydney football team rallied to score 21 points in the second half, but could not quite overcome the 20-0 first quarter deficit to #25 Centre in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship. The Tigers end their season 8-3 overall.

W&L earned a pair of individual honors as part of the 2011 ODAC Football All-Conference Awards. Charlie Westfal was tabbed the Offensive POY, while Brett Murray was selected as the scholar-athlete. E&H's Devan Sproles was named the Defensive POY, and H-SC's Marty Favret earned Coach of the Year. R-MC's Zac Naccarato garnered top rookie honors.
