The Bridgewater College football team opened Spring outdoor practice in a new way by welcoming a pair of Special Olympians to serve as honorary team captains for the day on Monday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va.

Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn announced that Scott Abell has been promoted to head football coach effective immediately. Abell had previously served as the program’s assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He replaces Frank Miriello, who announced his retirement from coaching earlier this week after 17 seasons as W&L's head coach.

Washington and Lee mentor Frank Miriello has announced his retirement as the school’s head football coach effective immediately. Miriello will remain as an instructor of physical education through the remainder of the current term. Miriello spent 17 seasons coaching Generals' football.

Three student-athletes earned the conference's top awards in a vote of the ODAC Board of Directors at the annual league meetings earlier this week. W&L's Greg Kurkis was recognized as the Doc Jopson Award winner. BC's Christina Rhodes and W&L's Emmy Mathews will share the Marge Berkely Award., marking the first tie in Berkely Award history.

Former Ursinus College associate head football coach and defensive coordinator, Chris Rusiewicz, was announced as Guilford College's 22nd football coach in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. Rusiewicz was named the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year for NCAA Division III this past season, his ninth on the sidelines at Ursinus.

BC's Tyler Beiler learned of another major honor on Thursday following the announcement of the 2010 D3football.com All-Region Teams. The Eagles' receiver was tabbed the South Region Player of the Year, highlighting a contingent of 13 student-athletes from the ODAC schools honored. The conference placed five players on the first team.

Washington and Lee football athlete, Greg Kurkis, is one of eight student-athletes from Old Dominion Athletic Conference member schools to earn a 2009 ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete Award during the fall athletic schedule. Kurkis tied with Hampden-Sydney College’s Josh Miller for the award. Both were tabbed from a pool of nominees by a vote of each of the conference’s sports information directors.

Miller, who tied with Washington and Lee University’s Greg Kurkis for the award, was tabbed from a pool of nominees by a vote of each of the conference’s sports information directors.

2008-09 Football News

Ted Keller, a legendary former coach, athlete and athletic administrator at Randolph-Macon College, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009. A native of Winchester, Virginia, Keller graduated from Handley High School in 1949 where he was a star athlete in football, basketball, and track. At Randolph-Macon, he excelled in football and baseball for four years.

Catholic shared both major ODAC awards with Keith Ricca and Nick Olivero securing player of the awards. Olivero was also the sports scholar-athlete. R-MC's Pedro Arruza was tabbed the top coach while WLU's Charlie Westfal was selected as the top rookie.

Catholic University made the most of its first postseason appearance since 1999, defeating Johns Hopkins University, 18-17, in the ECAC Southeast Bowl. It marked the first postseason triumph for CUA since 1935.

The opening event of the 2008-09 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) athletic schedule has officially been set. The 2008 ODAC Football Media Day will be held on Friday, August 8 at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia. The annual meeting will begin at 11:00 a.m.

Hampden-Sydney senior receiver Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) has been named the Dudley Award Winner on Thursday night at the 2007 Dudley Awards Banquet at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Smith, the Division II/III/NAIA recipient, is joined by University of Virginia defensive end Chris Long, the Division I and I-AA recipient, as the 2007 award winners.

Hampden-Sydney College wide receiver Drew Smith and Washington & Lee University defensive back Kyle Luby took home the ODAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year awards in the annual voting of the conferences’ football coaches. The Tigers’ Marty Favret was tabbed the Coach of the Year while W&L offensive lineman Greg Kurkis was named the Freshman of the Year. Bridgewater College quarterback Jeff Highfill picked up his second straight ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete Award.

In a season that saw a six-year defending league champion dethroned and a team move beyond conference play for the first time in 55 years, the one constant proved to be the top quality talent on display each Saturday. Headlining the ODAC’s best are the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, Guilford College wide receiver Chris Barnette and Emory & Henry College linebacker Marshall Doss.
