Shields, a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., helped the Generals
finish their season with a 40-23 victory over Shenandoah. He
posted a team-high 11 tackles, including 10 solo stops. His
biggest play came on the Hornets' first possession of the game.
After SU had driven to the W&L four-yard line on 10
plays, Shields turned the ball over for the Generals on the 11th.
He forced and recovered his own fumble at the one-yard line,
denying a potential Shenandoah touchdown on first-and-goal and
maintaining Washington and Lee's early 7-0 lead. For his
rookie season, Shields recorded 41 tackles, an interception, and
blocked a kick.
