EMU’s Spicher, W&L’s Mathews also Honored
FOREST, Va. --- Lynchburg College placed three
student-athletes on the All-ODAC First Team and earned one of the
four major awards as part of the 2010 All-ODAC Field Hockey
Awards. Hornets’ midfielder Shelly Milks was named the
ODAC Player of the Year. Randolph-Macon College head coach,
Crystal Carper, earned the ODAC Coach of the Year award.
Eastern Mennonite University’s Morgan Spicher was tabbed the
ODAC Rookie of the Year, and Washington and Lee University’s
Emmy Mathews was selected as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance
Scholar-Athlete.
Milks, a sophomore from Gloucester, Va., adds this honor to a
second team award in 2009. Milks helped lead the Hornets to
their fifth straight and ODAC-best 14th overall
conference field hockey title in 2010. She and the Hornets
open play in the NCAA Division III Tournament on Wednesday at
Christopher Newport. Milks was a key cog on both sides of the
field for LC. She ranked third on the team with 29 points on
10 goals and nine assists. Her midfield play helped jumpstart
the ODAC’s top offense to the tune of 79 goals and 4.16
tallies per game. Milks registered at least one point in
12-of-19 games played.
Carper enjoys her first ODAC top coaching honor in six seasons at
Randolph-Macon. The 2010 Yellow Jackets tied a program record
for wins with 13 on the way their first ODAC title game appearance
since 1998. Carper, who has now won 61 games during her
tenure in Ashland, has led R-MC to six straight ODAC tournaments,
including this season’s second seed upon entry into the
postseason.
Spicher, a freshman from Belleville, Pa., is the first EMU winner
of the ODAC’s best rookie award since Jonalyn Denlinger in
2002. The Royals’ defender helped solidify EMU’s
back line in her 13 games played. She recorded a pair of
defensive saves and made her way forward for one assist. She
helped lead the Royals to a semifinal appearance in this
year’s postseason tournament.
Mathews, a senior from Baltimore, Md., won this same award as a
member of the Generals’ women’s lacrosse team in
2010. In the classroom, she boasts a 3.887 grade point
average as a Philosophy and Business Administration major.
She is a multiple honoree as a W&L scholar as well as a member
of the All-ODAC Academic Team. Three times she has been named
to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National
Academic Team. On the field, Mathews is a former ODAC Rookie
of the Year (2007) and is now a two-time All-ODAC First Team
honoree following her selection to that squad this
season.
