Lynchburg Sweeps Field Hockey Awards

Milks, Kline and Steele Honored

FOREST, Va. --- Lynchburg College placed four players on the All-ODAC First Team and earned all four major accolades as part of the 2011 All-ODAC Field Hockey Awards.  Hornets' midfielder Shelly Milks was named the ODAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.  LC's head coach, Enza Steele, earned the ODAC Coach of the Year award, while Katie Kline garnered the ODAC Rookie of the Year accolade.  Milks was also selected as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete.

Milks, a junior from Gloucester, Va., helped lead the Hornets to their sixth straight and ODAC-best 15th overall conference field hockey title in 2011.  She and the Hornets earned a first-round bye and will open play in the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at The College of New Jersey.  Milks was a key player on both ends of the field for LC.  She is currently ranked tied for fourth on the team with 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists.  Her midfield play helped jumpstart the ODAC's top offense to the tune of 111 goals and 5.8 tallies per game.  In the classroom, Milks boasts a 3.95 grade point average as an Exercise Physiology major with a minor in Spanish.  The 2010 National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American has been named to the Lynchburg Dean's List multiple times and is also a member of the All-ODAC Academic Team.

Steele is the recipient of the ODAC's top coaching honor for the ninth time in her 32 seasons at Lynchburg.  The 2011 Hornets, currently ranked third in the country, enter the NCAA Division III field hockey tournament as the sixth seed.  Steele, who has now won 475 games during her tenure in Lynchburg, Va., has led LC to six straight ODAC titles, including this season's.  Lynchburg has also enjoyed national success under Steele, as the Hornets have made it into the NCAA tournament nine times in the last 11 years.

Kline, a freshman from Stafford, Va., is the first LC winner of the ODAC's best rookie award since Kristina Morris in 2008.  The Hornets' attacker is tied for second in the league with 31 points on 11 goals and nine assists.  Her 11 goals are tied for third in the conference, while her nine assists are tied for fourth in the ODAC.
