Ratner Named Golfer of the Year, Maggard and Wise, BC’s Redwood also Honored
CAPE CHARLES, Va. --- Guilford College earned
three major honors as part of the 2011 All-ODAC Golf awards,
determined by the league’s coaches over the championship
weekend. The Quakers’ Noah Ratner was selected as the
ODAC Golfer the Year, while head coach Corey Maggard earned
the inaugural Jack Jensen Coach of the Year Award. Freshman
Alex Wise was chosen as the ODAC Rookie of the Year.
Bridgewater College’s Mike Redwood corralled both of the
remaining honors, garnering the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance
Scholar-Athlete Award and the Ted Keller Sportsman of the Year
accolade.
Ratner, a sophomore from Asheville, N.C., adds this honor to last
year’s top rookie award and All-ODAC First Team
selection. He was named ODAC Golfer of the Week three times
this spring (twice in the fall) on the way to securing the
league’s top average heading into the ODAC Golf
Championships. Ratner played in a total of 21 rounds before
the league tournament, recording six top-ten finishes and four
top-five showings. His average of 73.1 sat atop the
conference. Ratner’s low round of the season was 68, of
which he posted four different times. He finished the ODAC
season with a second place showing at the conference
tournament.
Maggard, in his first year coaching the Quakers, helped guide
Guilford to the success the program had been accustomed to under
long-time mentor Jack Jensen, for which the ODAC top coaching honor
is named. Maggard helped lead the Quakers to their 11th
league crown and the ODAC’s best team round average heading
into the conference championships at 297.4. Players recorded
20 top-ten and 10 top-five finishes this season, with junior Mat
Hennick winning an individual title at the O’Briant-Jensen
Invitational. Ranked No.1 in the nation for much of the
season, the Quakers registered six second-place finishes and three
third place showings, finishing no lower than third in nine events
played throughout the fall and spring campaigns.
Wise, from Eden, N.C., stepped right into the Quakers’
regular line-up, posting a 75.7 average through 21 rounds of play
leading to the postseason. Twice he placed in the top-ten and
enjoyed one top-five finish in which he tied for third with
Guilford teammates Ratner and Hennick at the Ted Keller
Memorial. Wise posted a pair of 71’s this season to
account for his best single round total.
Redwood, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., adds this year’s
two honors to his 2010 and 2011 ODAC individual titles. In
the classroom, Redwood carries a 3.425 grade point average while
majoring in Economics. Three times he has been named to the
All-ODAC Academic Team. On the course, Redwood is now a
three-time All-ODAC First Team honoree, having helped lead the
Eagles to their first ODAC team title in 2010. This season,
he collected six top-ten and four top-five finishes coming into the
ODAC Championships. In 19.5 rounds of play, Redwood sat tied
for second in the league with a 73.5 average. He owns the
league’s low round of the season with a 65 in the second
round at Camp LeJeune.
