GC's Maggard, R-MC's Fuller, RC's Skaff and Ketron Honored
CAPE CHARLES, Va. --- Guilford College junior
Noah Ratner was named the ODAC Golfer of the Year at an awards
ceremony in conjunction with the ODAC Golf Championship at Bay
Creek Resort and Club on Monday evening. The standout Quaker
was joined by his coach, Corey Maggard, as the Jack Jensen Coach of
the Year. Randolph-Macon College's Kyle Fuller was tabbed
ODAC Rookie of the Year. Roanoke College's Adam Skaff was
selected as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete, and
fellow Maroon Brandon Ketron was recognized as the Ted Keller
Sportsmanship Award recipient.
Ratner, from Asheville, N.C., has put together one of the most
impressive seasons in Guilford and ODAC golf history. He has
won a Guilford record-tying four events during the 2011-12 regular
season, capturing titles at the Gordin D-III Preview, Golfweek
Invitational, O'Briant-Jensen Memorial and TaylorMade adidas
Invitational. He entered the ODAC championship as the
league's top scoring golfer with an ODAC-low 72.1 strokes per
round. That average also has him ranked #1 in NCAA Division
III, according to Golfstat's player rankings (http://www.golfstat.com/2011-2012/men/mncplhth.htm#DivIII).
He was won four ODAC Golfer of the Week awards this season, giving
him 10 in his career. He also is tied for the lowest round of
the season with a 65 in the first round at the O'Briant-Jensen
Memorial.
Coach Maggard, in his second season guiding the Quakers, enjoys his
second straight Jack Jensen Coach of the Year award. His
Quakers have ranked at or near the top of the Golfstat
team rankings (http://www.golfstat.com/2011-2012/men/mncaahth.htm#DivIII)
all season, currently holding down the fifth position.
Guilford has also ranked at or near the top of the Golf World/Nike
NCAA Division III Coaches Poll. The Quakers are currently
second in that listing. Coach Maggard has led his Guilford
squad to four event victories and the consolation title at the 41st
Marine Corps Intercollegiate at Camp LeJeune.
Fuller, from Richmond, Va., put together a solid first season in
Ashland. His 75.7 average ranked eighth in the ODAC heading
into championship weekend, the best mark of all the Yellow
Jackets. Among his nine starts, he placed in the top-five
once, finishing in a tie for fourth at the Ted Keller Memorial in
October. His low round of the season was a 69 in the first
round at Camp LeJeune.
Skaff, a senior from Charleston, W.Va., boasts a 3.5 grade point
average as a biochemistry major. He was named a 2010-11
Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar and was the recipient of
The Merck Award for outstanding graduate in chemistry or
biochemistry at Roanoke College. He is a member of Alpha
Epsilon Delta national health pre-professional honor society and
will be attending West Virginia University School of Medicine in
the fall. On the course, Skaff is second on the Maroons and
tied for 13th in the ODAC with a 76.4 average. He competed in
five events leading up to the ODAC Championships, earning a pair of
top-10 finishes that includes a tie for third at the Virginia
Intercollegiate in October.
Ketron, a senior from Abingdon, Va., tied with Skaff at the
Virginia Intercollegiate as the duo posted two-over par two-round
totals of 146 and helped Roanoke to a third place finish in the
event. Ketron entered the ODAC Championship leading the
Maroons and ranking third in the conference with a 74.7
average. He owns four top-10 performances on the season,
including a pair of top-five finishes. He placed fourth at
the Hampden-Sydney Invitational in addition to his efforts at the
Virginia Intercollegiate.
